    Feb 2nd, 2017 at 22:25:25     -    Ashta Chamma (Other)

Ashta Chamma is a board game popular in India. Astha Chamma board consist of 7*7 (7 rows and & columns). The board setup as could be seen in the picture (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashta_Chamma_(board_game)#/media/File:SeniorBoard.jpg ) is very different, as you can see the board has multiple boxes with a cross which is known as home. Each player has 4 pieces which are placed in their respective outer home, to win the game player simply need to have all the 4 pieces in the inner most home the first one to do so win the game. The pieces move anticlockwise as direction are shown in the diagram and get in inside loop once it traverses all the box in the outer loop, and continue to do so until it reaches the center home which is finished home.

    Components –

The game is having mainly 4 components Special dice (4 cowrie shells), Board, 4 pieces for each player and the players themselves. The cowrie shells have two faces (as it is or inverted) can be seen here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashta_Chamma_(board_game)#/media/File:Cowrie_shells_-_sozhi_roll_of_3.jpg ). The value of cowrie shell is decided as follow
1 – If one shell is inverted and all three are as it is
2- If 2 shells are inverted and 2 are as it is
3- If 1 shell is inverted and 3 are as it is
4- If all shells are as it is
8- If all shells are inverted

    Rules –

The game is controlled by throwing cowrie shells as dice. Each player moves it piece anti clockwise on the board.

A piece can be moved one block forward if one comes on cowrie or move according to what comes on cowrie shells.

There are multiple ways to move pieces as follow
    Each piece can move alone.

Multiple pieces can be moved together if they are in the same block.
For example, if 2 pieces of the same player are together in the same block and 4 comes he can move both the pieces together for 2 blocks as each 2 pieces moves together for 2 blocks will be counted as 4. But once multiple pieces are moved together they cannot move alone until they don’t reach a block with cross once it reaches the cross both pieces are free to move as the player wants can be together or alone. Even 3 or all 4 pieces can be moved together depending on the player strategy but for example, if one piece is already completed and a player already moved three pieces together and know if a number which is multiple of three does not come player can not to anything and next player plays.

Opponents can kill the pieces of other player and if it happens the piece has to start again for starting. The piece is killed by simple placing your piece where the opponent piece is placed.

Any piece cannot be killed if it is in the crossed box.

One more way not to be killed is as multiple pieces of the same player can be on the same block it cannot be killed until the opponent player equals the number of pieces for example if one player has two pieces on the same block an opponent can only kill if it moves two of his pieces together in such a way that it comes to the same block where opponent pieces are.

A player can get multiple chances of throwing the cowrie shells when it does following - If a player kills the opponent piece, one of the player’s piece reach the finished home or if an 8 comes in cowrie shells then player get another chance.

    Players –

The game can be played either with 2 or 4 players. Playing with 2 players is not so interesting, it is fun if 4 players are playing the game. Each player plays the game as their turn comes one after another in sequence. The first turn is decided by the first throw of cowrie shells who ever get the highest score starts the game and the turn are then played in anti-clock direction means whoever start the game the right to that person on board will play next and so on. If only two players are playing they start opposite to each other.

    Analysis –

I have played this game a lot, it seems like a simple board game with very few things to do, but actually the game is very interesting you have to think a lot how you should move your piece so that it cannot be killed. You have to make different strategy every time you move. Although a lot of things depend upon the cowrie shells value but even then strategy has to be made for efficiently moving forward in the game and not get killed and start again and again. The game becomes harder when there are all 4 players in the game as the possibility of getting killed again and again is very high due to more players and more pieces in the game. The game is rather easy with two players as you might not have to think a lot, more space to move freely and fewer chances of getting killed make the game a little boring therefore when there are 4 players playing the game it makes it harder to reach the goal and makes it interesting as well.

    Game 1 –

I played the first round of the game with only one of my friend so there were two players playing the game me and my friend. We started the game with both just throwing the cowrie shell as I got 4 and my friend got 2, I started the game. Initially, it was very easy to play just make a strategy to move all your piece to opponent’s house so that whenever the opponent gets out you can kill and move forward as well. But as almost both of us did the same thing we kind of killing each other multiple time and stuck in the same place again and again. But as the game moves forward pieces are spread it becomes more strategic that which piece to move and when to move so that all your pieces would be safe and not get killed again and again so that you can reach the goal. The strategy also depends as the dice is a special kind, the probability of every number coming is not same so you calculate a lot that what possibility is less and move according to that. But as I said less player less fun I, it was good to play even with two players but not as interesting and fun as it would be with all players.

    Game 2 –

This time I was playing this game with full player i.e. 4 players. We started in the same way just throwing the dice and decided who should play first. One of my friends started the game, initially, it was really tough where to move as where ever you move someone comes and kill your piece and you start again. It happened with all of us. Even sometimes a piece almost reached to goal but got killed and have to start again. This time the game was longer, have to make more strategy how to move, and even then complicated enough that reaching the goal was not easy. You sometimes also make a decision whom to kill when you have multiple choices of the opponent to kill but it becomes fun when everyone talks to each other that don’t kill him/her. After many rounds of play, some pieces of each player reached the finished house. And then it is easier to move as fewer pieces on board, more space and fewer chances of getting killed. With many players, the game is hard to complete it takes a long time to complete but it is very interesting and the difficulty level is hard as well. After almost an hour of play, one of us got all her piece to finish the house and she won the game. The game with all players has lot more options, have to make lot more strategy, think more about predations and have to calculate more about where to move and how to move. All these things make the game more of strategy making game rather than just throwing cowrie shells and just moving.

    Conclusion –

More the player more the fun and interesting the game is. Looks simple but complicated. Have to calculate in mind what to do, the better you calculate more chances of you winning. A lot depend upon your predictions as the game totally depends upon your prediction as you move according to your prediction multiple time you fail but many time you get succeed as well.
