For the massacre part, I decided to just go exploring and avoid the students in order to end it. Eventually I made it to the library where the police started shooting at me and I was given the option to commit suicide, which I took. It was then that a slide show started that showed pictures of the aftermath at Columbine along with pictures of the two shooters as children. I thought it was over but then I found myself in hell. I eventually was attacked a few times and died. So I started over after dying and died again in hell. This was the sequence that occurred until the half hour ended. It didn't take me that long to get through the beginning. I went to the park to pick up the weapons and then waited outside the school for the bombs to go off. Neither of them did, so the massacre started in the parking lot. The game told me the only place I could save my game was in the parking lot, and I foolishly did not. So, this whole sequence might be the most disturbing thing I've ever played in a video game. Not because it was graphic or anything, but just because of what it represents, but I continue forward. The shootings begin in the parking lot and end when you decide to kill yourself in the library. I switched between attacking automatically and manually, and eventually three "jocks" killed me in the lunch room. So I had to start over again. After dying a few more times, the half hour ran up, and I quit. The appearance of it reminded me of pre N64 Zelda, with the open ended world. I am playing as Eric, nicknamed "Reb" by his partner in psychopathy, Dylan Kleibold (Eric calls him "Vodka"). The game begins in the morning when Eric wakes up. He goes down to his living room where there is an assortment of objects and cutaways to keep you busy. The first was a pizza box (iirc) which incited a flashback where Eric and Dylan were out at night purchasing a firearm from somebody. More instances like this to come. Eventually, Dylan makes his way over and they prepare for the day. Before leaving, they leave a video diary explaining their intentions and watch the end of the movie "Apocalypse Now." They leave the house and drive to school and plant a bomb in the trunk of their car in the school parking lot. Eric then has to avoid hall monitors, teachers and security cameras in order to plant two bombs in the school cafeteria. It was at this point the half hour had expired. It appears that the motive of whoever created this game was to portray why the kids did this, but so far it is failing. I feel dirty playing this game to be quite honest.Tue, 27 Oct 2009 23:00:24 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4015&iddiary=7494Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2) - Thu, 24 Sep 2009 00:13:20https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3906I started out my third and final half hour of San Andreas by continuing the game I had saved earlier. CJ and one of his buddies visit an old friend-Big Bear. We learn that Big Bear is now addicted to crack and this disappoints CJ. A positive message is sent out in the game. Drugs are bad, and they are taking over CJ’s old neighborhood. CJ doesn’t like the ramifications of this at all so I have to beat up a crack dealer. Then I went to crack house and beat up everyone in it with a baseball bat. This instance raises an interesting ethical question. CJ doesn’t like what crack has done to his neighborhood, so I have to beat up a bunch of crack dealers. Is this good or bad? Is vigilante justice moral? I’m not sure what the correct answer to that is. Anyway, I had completed the mission and it earned me more respect. In the next mission they go into a drive thru where they’re scoped out by some drive-by shooters. My gang has to kill their gang first and did. Mission Accomplished. I received more respect and more money. I had trouble finding my way back to CJ’s house, so I decided instead to just start running people over with my car. Eventually, my car exploded and I died and had to start again at the hospital. After I died, I drove around a little and the half was up, and thus my playing of GTA: San Andreas. While some might believe that this game promotes violence, I honestly do not think it does. As I wrote in the second installment of this blog, nobody in their right mind is going to start committing felonies just because of a video game. Every sane person can easily separate reality and a video game. And for the lunatics who it could supposedly set off, they were going to be set off anyway, regardless of whether or not they played this game, so I think all this game promotes is obesity, since it is easy to get sucked in once you start playing. Thu, 24 Sep 2009 00:13:20 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3906&iddiary=7323Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2) - Wed, 23 Sep 2009 22:24:51https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3906For my second run through in San Andreas, I started out where I saved my game, at “CJ’s” house. As soon as I walked out of there, I was directed to walk to another house, where another movie started. I drove to a barber. On the ride over, we learn that Carl is planning on staying in San Andres in order to protect his family. I got a haircut, which is an indicator that “style” is important. I then went to a pizza restaurant where I eat, and then Carl’s buddy Ryder attempts to rob the place. CJ is a voice of reason, before the restaurant employee starts shooting at them. They flee, and drive back to the house. I hve completed the mission, which earns me respect. I go on to play the next mission, which is covering a rival’s gang sign with spray paint. This mission earned me both respect and money ($200), and I was done for this session. After my second go around, it appears that gang violence is what’s going to drive the rest of this game. The last mission I played was all about getting a step up on my rival gang (Ballas). This would lead to unethical behavior on my part. In one instance, a few Ballas were standing in front of their gang sign. That was a problem since my mission was to cover it up. The best way to solve this problem, I decided, was to kill all of them (prior to playing I looked up the cheat codes online) and to continue on with my mission. Of course, that was made harder by the fact that a bunch of cops were after my since I killed a bunch of gangstas. Going through all of this, it might appear to some people that this video game has some ethical issues. I would disagree, however. No right minded person would decide to start shooting gangsters just because they did it in a video game. I played the PS2 version. I did not have a saved game, so it automatically started with the game’s story, which begins with the main character leaving an airport and then getting arrested. The cops knew him (“Carl”) and pocketed his money. They then begin to taunt him and threaten to frame him for murdering a cop. They then toss him out of the moving police car in one of the roughest neighborhoods of the city. Just by this opening sequence, one can tell that this game isn’t for children. The language is vulgar and the content is targeted for mature audiences. After getting tossed out, you directed to get on a bike. I didn’t understand how to pedal and fell off in front of a gang. I decided to fight them with fists, but they had guns. I didn’t. Already I was off to a bad start, but this showed what kind of a game I was playing. Not suitable for minors and not glorified (not sure if that’s the right word). I fell off my bike in front of a gang, and was gunned down. The game desensitizes the player to death by flashing “wasted” after you die. Once I got out of the hospital I followed the map to “CJ.” I stole a car to hasten my journey. Get it? Grand Theft Auto? Once I made it there the story picked up again. He’s in what appears to be the home he grew up in. He has flashbacks and mourns the loss of his mother, whose death brought him back to the city. We learn she was murdered. Carl and what appears to be a family member drive to the cemetery. And argument starts at the cemetery and we learn that for one, murder is common where Carl grew up. They leave the cemetery, and dodge a drive-by shooting attempt by a bunch of gangsters. The action picked up again with me riding the bike out of harm’s way. Eventually I get a cul-de-sac where Carl and his buddies talk. Apparently I had completed the first mission and was done playing. What really stuck out to me was that after playing just one mission, it became clear that this was going to a very violent game.Tue, 22 Sep 2009 23:02:43 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3906&iddiary=7287
