dcnajarian's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=1195Columbine RPG (PC) - Tue, 23 Feb 2010 03:03:57https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4132So far I am really into this game. So much so that I am able to push myself past the frustrating design flaws. But, maybe the game designer did that for a reason. Because at this point I really do want to blow up the school and everyone inside of it. When I first started playing I knew a little bit about what was in store. I had heard about this game before but never was interested in trying it. I had heard it was more annoying than interesting. Thats a big red flag for me to stay away. However, when I started playing I was pleasently surprised to find myself immediatly drawn in. Rebs room was packing interesting detail into every pixel. As I explored the house I was learning more and more about him and Eric through neat interactions. The 8-bit covers were a very nice touch. There was a ton of history and information packed into that first level. I found the diolouge to be particularly provocative. Was this what they talked about? So calm, so excited? At this point I myself was excited to play, and begenning to wonder If I would be able to beat it in one sitting. Fat chance. Once I got to the actual game my progress came to a complete hault. I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out what was going on. The only guidance the player is given is to plant the bombs in the cafeteria and watch out for security guards. So I did. And, I never saw one. But, I kept getting busted by what I thought was an invisible security guard. After a laborious and frustrating trial and error I realized I was getting caught by Cameras. How was I supposed to know those were cameras noone said anything about cameras. Then I got busted by fellow students, even though they never said anything about the bombs. They Just wanted to know if we were in the Trenchcoat Mafia. I must have gotten caught 50 times. And not once did I see a security guard. Even in the cafeteria no security guards, just teachers and more sneaky cameras. I am mad, I hate everyone of the hall moniters. I want them all dead. Wait a minute. Was this bad game design? Or was this the designers intent? I honestly was nervous about killing students in a game simulating actual events. Butnow im on their side, I have made a connection with the characters. Is this a bad thing? Should I not want to connect with murderers? In this case I believe I should. Documentory game making is a stiff challenge. Simulating real events in a video game seems like a contradiction. But, as htis game shows it can be a unique and interactive way to learn and discuss current events. I am beyond intrigued by this game. And, I am excited to learn more about a major event in American History told thorugh a new lens of modern media.Tue, 23 Feb 2010 03:03:57 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=4132&iddiary=7722
