thisisnotjay's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=273Kirby's Adventure (NES) - Sat, 24 Feb 2007 03:36:32https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1475After playing this game for the second time, I've somehow found this game to be quite repetitive. I seem to be doing the same thing in every level. My character doesn't seem to be advancing much, and I've lost a lot of interest in this game, because there's really no strategy involved in this; only basic skills. Like most platformer games, I've grown really tired of this game in the fastest time possible. Though the challenge seems to get harder after every level, there's also easier ways to get through the levels, such as flying through the whole map, and absorbing certain rare enemies that allow you to speed right through the whole rest of the level. After beating a couple more bosses and dying a lot, the challenges in the challenge segmentation seem to get easier as well.Sat, 24 Feb 2007 03:36:32 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1475&iddiary=3132Kirby's Adventure (NES) - Sat, 24 Feb 2007 02:55:59https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1475Upon playing this game for the first time in my life, I was somewhat enthralled. I'm not a big fan of platformer games, but I found this game to be fun the first 30-40 minutes of playing it. This is a game of progression and narrative segmentation, in which you follow the storyline, defeat waves of enemies and boss challenges, and solve bonus puzzle problems. Basically, Kirby doesn't have many moves or options other than swallowing enemies or objects that the bosses throw at you, and spitting them back out to inflict damage on the enemies. There are also certain enemies you can swallow to absorb their powers. Once you absorb a new power or weapon, it stays with you until you get damaged by an enemy or fall off a platform. So far, I've gotten as far as the first boss level, in which I spent over 20 minutes trying to defeat, only to find out that I was supposed to swallow the bombs he threw at me and spit it back at him.Sat, 24 Feb 2007 02:55:59 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1475&iddiary=3128StarCraft: Brood War (PC) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 23:43:39https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1285Another part of this game is that it's strategy-based. It's a real-time strategy game, in which you also have to learn how to defeat your opponents through strategic warfare. After playing it for the second hour, I realized that a new character is added every time you complete a level. This is a game of progression, because you are supposed to follow their storyline, and you can't advance without beating the level. The storyline isn't very intricate, but is very exciting, and quite grabbing. So far, I've just gone around finding crystals and teaming up with renegade terrans and Infested Kerrigan, who is a zerg with incredible damage. The only thing I'd probably change about this game is for Blizzard to pick up this project, and make a part 3 of this game. In other words, I wouldn't change this game at all. [I just noticed that my gamelog is set in eastern time (3 hours ahead), and it's 9 right now. I have no idea how to fix this.]Fri, 09 Feb 2007 23:43:39 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1285&iddiary=2743StarCraft: Brood War (PC) - Fri, 09 Feb 2007 23:14:44https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1285There's basically two parts of this game: campaign and multiplayer. You can play the campaign mode to get familiar with the characters and storyline. Multiplayer is meant for expanding your gameplaying skills, and competing with other players. I chose to play campaign mode, because I haven't played this game in years, and I also like the storyline, which multiplayer will never get into. This is a game of progression and is pretty basic. The rules are to carry out the instructions you are assigned at the beginning of the level (defeating the enemies' bases, retrieving a crystal, etc). There are also limitations, which are that you have a limited amount of resource from which you can build things, and you have a maximum capacity of 200 units that you can create. Basically, the whole point of the game is to advance and increase your civilization by building warrior units or buildings, and defeat the opposing team. There are 3 different races in this game: protoss, terrans, and zergs. Protoss are an advanced civilization that uses their own psi energy to attack and build structures. Terrans are like the renegade humans, and their form of weapons are guns, missiles, laserguns, etc. Zergs are the infested alien race that attack by spraying acid, or using their claws. All the races pretty much even each other out. For the first hour, I chose to play the Protoss campaign. Basically, all I've done so far is defeat the invading zergs and retrieve crystals that contain enough energy to destroy all the zergs.Fri, 09 Feb 2007 23:14:44 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1285&iddiary=2740Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Wed, 31 Jan 2007 05:09:00https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=976Upon playing it for the second time, I didn't really realize anything different, since the whole concept of this game is beat your opponents. As far as things I like, and things I can change about this game, I think the best part of this game is that you can jump while you're still in the mid-air to avoid getting out of the boundaries. Something I could change about this game would be to add more characters, and give each character more special moves to spice up the game a little more. There's a lot of action in this game, and it can also get really intense, depending on the skill level of your opponents. This is basically a game of emergence, because there's no telling how the player will act or respond to your moves. This game is all about strategy, and how you apply your moves. This game also falls closely to Clark C Abt's definition of a game, which is "an activity between two or more independent decision makers seeking to achieve their objectives in some limiting context." Essentially, what I like about this game, compared to others, is that you can be damaged over 100% and still not die. The whole point of this game is to knock the other players out of the boundaries. Once you get knocked off, you lose a life, and you only get 9 lives. I didn't know there were character-specific type moves that you could do, so I used Yoshi the whole time. Yoshi doesn't really do anything special, except eat up other characters and turn them into eggs, and also throw explosive eggs. The rules and gameplay are also pretty basic. It's to basically kill all your opponents, and the winner is the last man standing. There are a couple affordances in the game, such as barrels and crates that contain weapons you can use to afflict more damage to the opponents. There's no implicit rules to this game as well. The whole point is to destroy all the other players in any way you can. Bad sportsmanship is a key factor.Wed, 31 Jan 2007 04:53:18 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=976&iddiary=2193Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Sat, 20 Jan 2007 20:41:49https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=734I'm mainly frustrated with this game, because I still can't get past that long jump in the second level. I've spent an additional hour trying to figure out ways to make this jump, but no matter what, everything fails. I've unlocked all the secret boxes and went through all the tunnels, but I still can't pass it. I have officially decided to give up this game and play something else. -------- Essentially, I think all aspects of this game are good. I wish I can get more into it, but I probably won't get that far into it on the computer version. As for changes, I'd take out some of those hidden invisible boxes that keep forcing me to die. Also, I'd probably make the jump at the end of the second level a little shorter. I'm not sure if Yoshi can be used in this game, since I haven't gotten that far yet, but I'd also love to use Yoshi, like in the other Mario series. (This entry has been edited1 time. There are many things about this game that I enjoy a lot, but no matter how many different techniques I try at the end of the second level, I can never get passed that long jump that you're supposed to make. The game play about this game is great, though it takes a lot of getting used to when you're controlling Mario. I found it very hard to control him when he's jumping. I think the graphic designs in this game are the best, because they keep it plain and simple. The design of this game and level structures are great as well, because they keep it basic, yet still challenging at the same time. I'd like this game more if I could only get passed the second level.Sat, 20 Jan 2007 05:31:29 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=734&iddiary=1925Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (XBX) - Thu, 18 Jan 2007 18:28:19https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=524After beating the game another 3 times, I finally unlocked Magneto. My Magneto-Sentinel-Storm lineup is finally complete. Anyways, the dynamics about this game that I enjoy most are that it's fast-paced, and you are expected to execute combos with perfect timing, which is something that most other games don't have. Every level in the game is the same, and even though it's repetitive, I still enjoy it very much. The main point of playing this game isn't to beat it, but to gain more skills. The main reason I also play this game is so that I can beat other top players in the arcade. This game can also be the hardest game in the world to play, because your quickness and timing have to be perfect. If you ever watch how the top players in the world play, you'll be amazed at how fast their fingers are moving. If I can relate it to anything, it'd be like typing 150 words per minute.Thu, 18 Jan 2007 18:28:19 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=524&iddiary=1615Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (XBX) - Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:47:04https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=524I found this game to be highly enjoyable, but there were also a lot of defects with this game. The dreamcast version of this game is a lot better. I also found numerous glitches in the xbox version and the gameplay is a lot slower and laggier. Apparently, the point of this game is that you have a team of 3 different characters, and all you do is try to beat the opponent's characters. The game is very fast-paced, and it takes a lot of practicing and adapting to the conditions of the game before you can truly get used to it. The moves are fairly easy to learn as well, but the timing to execute the moves is really hard. The whole game takes about 15-25 minutes to beat, and after you beat it, you can get bonus points to unlock new characters in the game. I'm mostly frustrated, because after beating it for the 10th time, I still can't unlock Magneto, which is the best character. So for now, I'm just stuck with Cable, Sentinel, and Captain Commando, who all do the most damage in the game, and are also the hardest to control.Fri, 12 Jan 2007 01:47:04 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=524&iddiary=1296
