bluedude17's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=452Patapon (PSP) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 02:54:10https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3096Gameplay: Upon playing Patapon for the second time, I became more engaged in the game than I had been before. For one thing, the controls became easier to use. I could now easily press the given button while the given beat was being played. However, there were instances that I would make a mistake, and this caused my rhythm to get “off-track.” However, despite some errors made, I was able to successfully and happily complete level after level. The characters in the game are quite lovable. They remind me of the Pikmin tribe from the Nintendo game, Pikmin. Their appearance and vocals are quite cartoon-like and it is obvious that the game was made to attract children. Furthermore, while playing you develop a bond with the characters in the game, which causes sadness when you lose patapons in battle. Game Design: This game is innovative because it revolves around “keeping to the beat.” The actions of the characters in the game depend on whether on not the player is able to correctly press the right button on the correct beat. To make it even more complex, the order that one must push buttons becomes harder and harder to memorize as the game progresses. The game creates conflict by throwing multitudes of enemies in the way of the patapons. Furthermore, if the player misses a beat, they must wait a few seconds before they can continue their progress. The level design of the game is quite simple. In the early levels, the majority of the game takes place on the bottom half of the screen, with the remainder being filled with empty space. The reward structure of the game is also simple. As each level is completed, a new move is unlocked or more patapons are added to the player’s army. Also, a new mission is unlocked. Overall, this game is simple, yet extremely fun and offers hours of entertainment. In the game, you aid armies of patapons, little eyeball-shaped creatures, in accomplishing a sequential series of missions. Your ultimate goal: to find the earth’s end! Being their god, it is your duty to ensure that these whimsical beings make it safely to this destination. To add challenge to the game, various enemies hinder the path in an attempt to obliterate your patapons! Gameplay: Upon first playing Patapon, I realized that this game is unlike any other game I have ever played. I also realized that I had no idea what I was doing. There is quite a lot of dialogue in the intro of the game, which I hurriedly rushed through. However, I eventually learned that the game is all about keeping the beat. In order to control a patapon, you must press a given button at the appropriate time; that is, on the correct drum beat. The story seemed very simple upon first playing as well. The game is a 2D side scroller, and you progress by pressing the appropriate button. The D-Pad is not used at all, which is slightly awkward at first. However, you soon become engaged in playing the game due to its extreme uniqueness. Overall, my first impression of the game was one of confusion yet amusement as well.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:29:25 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3096&iddiary=5780Super Mario 64 (N64) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:55:00https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2798Classic log #2 Gameplay: On my second round of gameplay of Super Mario 64, I felt myself become more engaged in the game. I found myself often saying, “Just five more minutes,’ and forty-five minutes later, I would still be playing. On top of the addictiveness of the game, other people were drawn in to watch me play. Not many games are interesting to watch from a bystander’s point of view, yet this one is an exception. The storyline in the game is very creative. Mario must make his way through a multitude of levels, each one different from the next. The levels are also located in paintings and Mario must jump into these artworks, further adding to the creativity. As the game progresses, the levels become harder and harder because they include more complex puzzles and challenges. Although some of the challenges are frustrating, they are not impossible, and provide great satisfaction when completed. Design: This game is innovative because it takes the 2D version of Super Mario and turns it into a 3D platform. It also contains multiple, unique, imaginary lands and levels. The levels in the game pretty much use all the space that they can, allowing the player to explore to great extents. Although there are parts that restrict Mario to traverse certain paths, the player mostly chooses his or her own route. The player must also figure out the safest and easiest way to get to a star. The reward structure in the game is as follows: with every given amount of stars collected, a new level(s) is presented. When the basic game is completed, that is you defeat Bowser, you are also allowed to free Peach. Furthermore, there are bonuses for collecting all the stars in the game, but that takes a lot of effort. The game offers many challenges, for the player must figure out how to maneuver Mario through series of booby traps in order to collect stars. Enemies, such as Goombas, are also spawned in the game to add complexity. Overall, this is a fun and mind-boggling game to play! (This entry has been edited1 time. In the game, you play as the mustached, red-capped plumber, Mario. Your goal: to rescue the princess, Peach, from the evil monster, Bowser. During your tedious journey, you collect stars to open more levels, which are very complex. All in all, this is a very addictive game providing hours of entertainment! Gameplay: Upon first playing the game, I realized that the controls were fairly simple. This added to my enjoyment in playing the game for I easily mastered Mario’s moves. Because the game is from a third-person perspective, I was able to see Mario’s actions clearly. Furthermore, because the game has camera controls, there is no reason for a player to blame the camera for a death. This is unlike other inferior games, which do not offer camera controls, leading to player frustration. The characters in the game are classic and lovable. First off, the plump plumber’s appearance is quite likable, forcing players to feel attached to him. On the other hand, Bowser’s appearance is the exact opposite. His look and persona are just pure evil, urging players to defeat him as fast as possible. Finally, there is Peach, whose innocence and elegant appearance create the perfect damsel in distress. The assortment of unique characters in the game adds to the positive feel and creativity in the game, and certainly increased the enjoyment of my personal gameplay experience.Wed, 20 Feb 2008 23:36:56 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2798&iddiary=5223F-Zero X (N64) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 02:44:29https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2550Log #2 Gameplay: On my second round of gameplay, I became more engaged in playing the game. By this time, I had mastered steering my ship, and was able to earn myself a first place medal in many races. This resulted in my satisfaction and encouraged me to continue playing. Also, I began to experiment with other characters besides Captain Falcon. I learned that each character had its own unique hovercraft. Another part of F-Zero X I enjoyed was that it offered a multi-player mode. This allows players to race up to three other people. Although I was a novice at the game, I was still able to beat some of my friends in multiple races. Overall, I found the game to be fun, although it was a bit repetitive with its consecutive races. However, the addition of new maps and the unlocking of characters kept this repetition at a minimum. Design: This game is innovative because it is set in the future. Each hovercraft is unique and has its own creative look. Furthermore, each map is unlike any other map. This is a good game because it is fast paced and requires immense concentration. Apart from the standard race mode, the game offers other challenges such as “time attack” and a “death race.” The game creates conflict by pitting you against 29 other hovercrafts in an epic race to the finish line. Because so many ships are on the field at one time, chaos plays a huge role in the game. The level design is quite complex, including racing tracks that at often times are quite hard to follow, resulting in the destruction of hovercrafts. However, the game is still fun, for with every failure, players become more and more determined to win. Furthermore, after completing a certain number of races, players are rewarded with the addition of more characters to choose from. Sat, 09 Feb 2008 02:44:29 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2550&iddiary=4871F-Zero X (N64) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 01:40:46https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2550Log #1 Summary: This week, I chose to play the game F-Zero X for the N64. In the game, you race against many opponents in a vehicle of your choice. However there is a difference between this game and many other typical racing games; the race is set in the future. Instead of your typical automobile, the vehicles in the game are comprised of futuristic hover crafts! Gameplay: Upon first playing the game, I noticed that the graphics were not that detailed. However, I was not expecting that much because it is an N64 game. There were also a wide variety of characters to choose from, leading to my uncertainty of which character to choose. In the end, I chose the character I was most familiar with, Captain Falcon, who was featured in Super Smash Brothers (the game I chose to play last week). On my first round of gameplay, I crashed my hovercraft multiple times resulting in my frustration. The controls took little time getting used to, but I found steering the craft to be quite tedious. After a while I eventually caught on, and slowly moved on to new levels. With each level, came a new map to race on along with an increase in the game’s difficulty level. There was not much of a story except simply to race and win!Sat, 09 Feb 2008 01:40:46 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2550&iddiary=4805Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:41:05https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2248Classic Log 2 Gameplay: Upon playing Super Smash Brothers a second time, I became more and more addicted to the game. With each new level presented, I was encouraged to keep on playing more and more. Apart from the actual levels in the game, mini-games are also presented. Although these seem pointless, mini-games boost your overall score. Upon completion of the game, I was disappointed that the game was so easy to beat. However, I soon discovered that new characters were now available to use such as Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff. Besides a solo mode, the game also offers a versus mode. Once I completed the solo mode, I invited some of my friends to play and tried out the versus mode. Although they were all better than me, versus mode was extremely fun. It was, if not more, just as addicting as solo mode and provided a good hour of entertainment. Versus mode is also great because it allows players to play as their favorite character and encourages you to form a special bond with one of the lovable Nintendo characters. Game Design: Super Smash Brothers is innovative because it brings different Nintendo characters from different games into one game. Furthermore, each character has his or her own individual moves. This encourages players to learn the moves of each character and see which one they prefer to use. The game creates conflict by basically throwing all these characters into one area along with some random weapons and letting them have at it. The levels in the game are very complex. Each level is unique and has many areas to explore and battle. The levels are also based off Nintendo games making the game more fun to play. The game is addictive for players hurriedly try to complete one level just so they can move on to the next one. The reward structure in the game is quite simple. You basically defeat one enemy just to move on to the next one until the game ends. Overall, Super Smash Brothers is an amazing game because it is quite addictive and creative. In the game, you play as one of eight classic Nintendo characters. The character list includes: Mario, Pikachu, Yoshi, Samus, Link, Fox, Kirby, and Donkey Kong. Your goal in the game is to battle other characters in an arena as fast you can. With every attack you perform, your enemy's damage level is increased. Eventually, when the opposing character's damage level reaches a certain point, a knockout will occur, and the next level will be presented. Gameplay: When I first played this game, I had no clue what I was doing. Before I could start the actual game, I had to enter practice mode just so I could learn the character controls. It took me at least thirty minutes of playing before I memorized which button controlled what action. Although it was frustrating at first, the game was quite fun to play once I got the hang of it. The characters in the game are quite fun to play as and against. When I first started playing through the levels, I used the character Mario, for he is the true symbol of Nintendo. The gameplay itself is quite intriguing for there is a variety of moves which characters can perform. The more you play, the better you get at using attacks, resulting in your personal enjoyment as you transform your cute, innocent Nintendo character into a fighting machine! Overall, the game is very addicting and interesting.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:54:39 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2248&iddiary=4283Resident Evil 4 (Wii) - Mon, 14 Jan 2008 07:27:34https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1763Log 2 Gameplay: As I continued to play Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, I became more and more addicted to what was happening. The story grew quite intriguing as new characters were introduced, and "zombie" numbers increased. The graphically stunning cut scenes that were prevalent throughout my gameplay experience further added to my entertainment and encouraged my involvement in the game. Furthermore, the more I played, the more in touch I became with the Wii controller, adding to my enjoyment of the game. Also adding to my enjoyment, was the constant heart-pounding action which became more prevalent the more I played. After playing the game for a while, I finally fulfilled the first part of my primary goal, finding the President's daughter. Although this relieved me, I became quite annoyed with the fact that now, I not only had to keep Leon out of trouble, but her as well! Adding to my frustration was the fact that I was given two more buttons to remember to assist in controlling her. However, with the addition of this character, the game became much more challenging. At often times, I happily found myself forced to think carefully in order to solve complex problems and puzzles. Game Design: This game is innovative because it uses the third person point of view to its ultimate potential. Unlike most shooters, such as Halo which are first person, this one offers a different and effective viewpoint. With this unique spectrum, players are able to see every action unfold in front of them. The action itself is very detailed and graphic, and the levels are very complex. The game uses the space on the screen very wisely, for each area presented usually contains something which relates to your journey, whether it be a key, "zombies", items, etc. Also, the detail in the maps increase the intensity while playing, for you never know what is lurking behind a door or in a tree. Because the game has so many puzzles, one hundred percent attention is needed in playing. These puzzles are mentally challenging, and through their achievement, a cut scene is usually provided, granting players satisfaction. However, at times, some of the challenges presented seem a bit too hard for beginners, yet for the determined ones, they should be completable. The reward structure in the game is very original, for as the game progresses, new items, such as weapons are presented. The weapons available increase in power as players get further and further in the game, encouraging gameplay. What makes this game so appealing is that with every level completed, a cliffhanger ending occurs. This encourages players to continue on with their gameplay, longing to discover what happens next. Personally, I also found the suspense in the game to be appealing for it urged me to continue on, just as a suspense film would urge its viewers to continue watching. Furthermore, since the storyline is well developed, with every action, the story unravels itself slowly and surely, adding to people's thirst to know what happens. These addictive qualities make Resident Evil 4 an intense, attractive, and overall good game.Mon, 14 Jan 2008 07:27:34 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1763&iddiary=3573Resident Evil 4 (Wii) - Mon, 14 Jan 2008 03:05:56https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1763Log 1 Summary: I chose to play the highly acclaimed game Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. In the game, you play as a United States government agent known as Leon, and you are given the task of finding the current President's daughter from a secluded location. Although the task sounds simple, the area from which you must retrieve the girl has been overrun by "zombie" peasants! Game Experience: Upon first playing the game, I was surprised that the graphics were so detailed. The characters were very lifelike, especially Leon, who's appearance portrayed the perfect action hero. While playing the game, I noticed that there was a variety of complex controls. To control Leon, you have to use not only the Wii remote, but also the numbchuck. During the first thirty minutes of gameplay, I became frustrated with the controls, for I often forgot which button triggered which action. I frequently found myself at a GAME OVER screen because I had forgotten which button to press to execute a close-range attack. As I made my way through the first section of the game, I noticed that it was filled with suspense. I often found myself jumping as a "zombie" would emerge out of a building, from a tree, etc. The creepy soundtrack in the game also added to the suspense. I admired that the game was a third person shooter, for a clear image of action was presented. Although there was not much shooting, the game still gained my interest due to the heart-pounding instances and graphic violence that occurred. (This entry has been edited1 time.
