I kept dying, and kept losing my rings which really pissed me off. Plus, I couldn't get past the first boss that easily. It took me like twenty tries to beat him! The game was still fun though, and I couldn't stop trying, because there was always fast paced action and several tiers to each level so you could go a different way every time. Plus, you could be either Sonic or Knuckles, two different characters with two different types of abilities. I like them both because they are just plain cool, and you have fun playing as them too. Still, I think playing this game was funnest for me because there is such replayability- even with no checkpoints or savepoints, I was willing to play it again because it was fun every time and there was always a new thing for me to do. Not only could you take every path a new way, but also at a different speed! DESIGN: The speed was definately the thing that set this apart from most games. Without it, it would be lame. It's always fun to speed through the loops and through the level without a care as to where you're going, and that I think is a good idea. The intro when we see Knuckles laying down peacefully and watching the critters, only to be bombed by Dr. Robotnik, is really cool and offers insight as to Knuckles character and role in the game. It was a quick backstory as to why he is in the game, and nothing much needed to be explained. I liked it because it was quick, cool, and didn't get old to me. I seriously hated the way you lose ALL of your coins when you get hit. It doesn't matter how many you have, you lose them all, and then if you get hit again without collecting any, you die. I thought that was stupid and not thought out well enough, you should lose like half your coins, but not all. I had a problem with the score, too. It really served no purpose, and I don't think there was a high score, so it didn't matter what you got. I thought that was stupid too, there should be a high score or at least a reward for getting a high score. I liked the aesthetics a lot. The game had a whimsical feel that was not to be taken seriously. I mean, when you killed a bad guy, they turned into a critter and ran away. The sound just fit with the artwork too, I think, in that you are put in a uniqe world: the world of Sonic and Knuckles!Thu, 06 Mar 2008 03:28:54 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3076&iddiary=5979Sonic and Knuckles (GEN) - Wed, 05 Mar 2008 22:52:08https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3071SUMMARY: In Sonic and Knuckles, you can play as Sonic or Knuckles and run through levels really fast colecting rings and stomping baddies. Both Sonic and Knuckles are after Dr. Robotnik for their own reasons, and you chase him through the levels. GAMEPLAY: I really liked this game when I first started playing it. It took me back to the years of playing the demo at Toys R Us, and the design was pretty nice with the bright colors and whimsical feel. I thought it was really fun to go really fast through the levels without a care, and I loved the way that there was more than one path to take. This game was interesting because it was unlike any other platformer, in that you move really fast and the game is a blast if you want it to be. I was able to talk to my friends and be like, "Hey, check this out!" and fly through a level. I didn't, however, like the way that I would always crash into things and lose every single one of the coins I had just collected! (You need coins to survive, and if you get hurt with zero coins, you die!) (This entry has been edited1 time. I was actually looking foward to each new world to enter, and I didn't even take a break playing for a while! I guess this is one of those games you have to play for a while to get the hang of, which is remarkable for its time. I can see how this was a classic for its time, because you're able to move around in a world and actually choose your next level. I thought that was cool, because they are different paths you can take to get to the princess and you get to choose which way to go. Plus, it's kind of like you're playing even when choosing a level, because at some points you have to avoid a hammer-throwing guy and catch up to a flying ship. This was creative, and interesting for its time, and impressed me even now. I liked the little bonus lives and tokens you can get, too, as well as the little easter eggs in the game. DESIGN: This game is pretty well designed, from the level structures to the aesthetics. Each level seems different to me, even though they are all linear and have the same goals. Maybe it's the little things that make them different and fun to play, and there are a lot of little things. The Easter Eggs I found amusing, I remember at one point Mario got turned into a frog, and then I was able to hop around in a frog suit for a whole level! What fun. This gives me the idea of having little Easter Eggs, for my own fun and for the fun of the player. The controls were really the only problem I had with this game. I kept dying because it was confusing as to whether I could fly or not with the raccoon tail and how high Mario could jump. I liked the overall tone of this game, which was whimsical. The colors and characters definately brighten up the game, and they brightened up my day when I played this game.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 00:22:24 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2801&iddiary=5260Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Tue, 19 Feb 2008 19:02:01https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2661SUMMARY: Super Mario Brothers 3 is a platformer game for the NES. You are Mario once again, and you have to save the princess... once again. GAMEPLAY: This game was fun but sometimes annoying to play. My initial reaction was "All right, I'm a Mario Brother!" It was fun to jump around, but I kept dying easily, which pissed me off. It wasn't until I got the raccoon tail that I started having real fun- this game felt like it was somewhere between the original Mario Brothers and Super Mario World- that is, it was fun, but not exactly perfected. Some of it was repetitive, but I didn't mind. Like the King being turned into something funny every time I saw him, and then I had to go onto a floating ship to find the "Magic Wand" (I wonder what these guys were on when they made this), but it was still fun to play, even though it happened more than once and I saw it coming. The bosses had the simple three-hops-till-death formula, but I had no problem with that because it was easier for me to play and continue on!Tue, 19 Feb 2008 19:02:01 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2661&iddiary=5034Prince of Persia (GEN) - Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:13:11https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2473GAMEPLAY: Alright, after I finally got through the first level I had a hard time getting through the second level. I got pretty pissed after a while, because I kept dying by making little jumping mistakes or by just having bad luck. Still, it was fun to be playing this game because something about the level design made me think I could make it through this level every time I played it, but I seriously played it about 20- 30 times before I was able to beat it. There was still not much to the story other than a little glimpse at what the princess is doing while you are making your way through the dungeons- she is waiting to be saved as she watches a timer go down. It is a classic story of a hero saving the girl, but this time, it is set in ancient Persia! DESIGN: After completing the first level, you see the princess watching an hourglass as the time she has left slips away. This timer was an interesting feature in the game, because it gives you only one hour to beat the entire game, and keeps you motivated to do that. It also coincides with the "infinite life" feature, because you can die as many times as you want without a gameover, but you still have to take heed to the timer. The puzzles were actually pretty interesting, and they were all different. Some took a really long time to do with many retries for me, and others were done quite simply with a fast-paced effort. I liked the way every level was pretty different in its setup, so it gives me the idea to make all the levels of my game different. The rewards are fun to get, you have to find secret potions that restore and give you more than max health. Also, there are little potions that give you a few more minutes on the timer. There is even one potion that freezes the game, except for the player so one can run through the entire level with nothing moving or harming you. What I thought was cool was at one point in the game, the prince runs through a mirror, and then an evil clone of him is made. That was very unexpected and clever of the designers, because the clone continues to screw you over at random times in the later levels. Also, there is a little white mouse that helps you out at one point. It sounds random, and it is. I like these little things that make the game interesting and fun to play.Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:13:11 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2473&iddiary=4677Prince of Persia (GEN) - Fri, 08 Feb 2008 20:57:59https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2457SUMMARY: Prince of Persia is a puzzle/adventure game where you control the prince of Persia. You go through dungeons with just an hour to beat the whole game, and rescue the princess of course. GAMEPLAY: When I first started this game, I thought it was pretty ridiculous. At the beginning, the prince gets thrown down some stairs into a dungeon for some unexplained reason where several deathtraps await him. Apparently, he has to save the princess. The first thing I noticed was the time limit, it said "60 Minutes Remaining", telling me I had 60 minutes left for this game. Well, I thought I had 60 minutes left for this particular level, so I took my time. I died many tmes, which angered and frustrated me. I got killed so many times, I wanted to give up, but for some reason, I still found it fun kind of. When I got the sword to kill the guard, I was really pumped to keep playing, and so I did. I think it was this reward system that kept me going from the start, because you have to find the sword to kill the guard, which I found cool. This was also the type of game that let me talk to other players as I play, although it was just a one player game. Bystanders looked on in awe as I played on, until I got to the second level which ended my first 45 minutes of gameplay.Fri, 08 Feb 2008 20:57:59 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2457&iddiary=4653Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 25 Jan 2008 23:29:45https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2198GAMEPLAY: On second play, I played multiplayer with some friends. Here is where I put my stealth abilities to the test as I challenged my friends. We had a grand old time, talking and shooting and laughing- this game was easy for us to interact with other players. I liked the hidden characters from previous Bond movies, like "Jaws" and "Oddjob". I wasn't too happy with the multiplayer level selection because it was pretty linear and no real places to hide, but in total, the multiplayer was fun because it was kind of ridiculous slapping and running in circles trying to avoid each other. DESIGN: I liked this game because just about every level is different, and for some reason, you always want to complete the missions because you're doing something cool as James Bond. For example, the first two levels involve jumping off a dam and exploding poisonous tanks, and the third is simply taking off in a plane. I find that cool and kind of exhilerating. The controls were about the only problem I had with this game. I couldn't shoot some people when I had to, but that was really not a big problem. Also, the fact that you had to start every level with just a little silencer angered me a little. The graphics were dated and a little laughable now that I compare them to games today, but that still did not take away from the enjoyment of the game. With a cool soundtrack backing this game with songs that are still stuck in my head, this was a pretty fun game. This gave me the idea for my video game to make every level totally different with new challenges and some nonstop action. Also, to just have good clean fun with my game.Fri, 25 Jan 2008 23:29:45 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2198&iddiary=4188Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Fri, 25 Jan 2008 23:05:14https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2131GAMEPLAY: On second play, I played multiplayer with some friends. GAMEPLAY: I remember playing it as a kid and I couldn't get very far, but this time, I was able to. This game was pretty fun, I thought, despite it being twelve years old and kind of outdated. The attack system is simple enough, where you just shoot things and sneak through a level. It sounds like any other shooter, but the fact that you are James Bond and you have a few objectives to complete before ending the level make it really cool. I liked the realistic AI, where the enemy soldiers roll and sidestep shots, as well as the fact that you can knock their hats off. I also enjoyed the way you can take the game as fast as you want to. You can sneak, or you can go with guns blasting through the whole level. It's the player's choice, and the 3d world was a good setup for this game. The story was good fun. Taken from the movie Goldeneye (or maybe the book), it was fun to be like, "Ah, I remember that from that movie! That's cool!" Also it put you in the shoes of James Bond 007, with the theme music backing you up, it was real fun.Fri, 25 Jan 2008 18:51:01 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2131&iddiary=4079Katamari Damacy (PS2) - Mon, 14 Jan 2008 13:56:45https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1684GAMEPLAY: I found Katamari Damacy to be pretty fun because it had comic humor and interestng gamemplay that I like. I've never seen a game like it before, where you roll a ball around picking up "stuff" for the king of the cosmos. It sounds ridiculous, and it is, but that's what makes it great. You make your ball bigger after picking up stuff and the bigger it gets the bigger objects you can pick up. This way, you can go back and pick up things you couldn't pick up before, and you can end up picking up almost everything in a level! I remember this cow kept knocking me around until I came back a few minutes later twice the size I was before and I picked him and his farmer up! I also enjoyed the music and aesthetics of the game which are both comical and just plain fun to be around. DESIGN: I think Katamari Damacy is designed very well in all aspects. The graphics are bright and lively, as well the world in which it takes place. This and the hip music help set the mood for a fun and good time people will have when playing the game. The designs and dialogue of people are ridiculous and funny in a good way because they keep the whimsical spirit of the game. And what a whimsical game it is, rolling a ball around picking up stuff. The game is actually fun to play because you want to see how much stuff you can pick up in a given amount of time, or how long "the king of the cosmos will believe in you." In that time, you start slow picking up little things like thumbtacks and erasers but then build up to bigger things like people, and it's fun and satisfying to make your ball as big as possible, wreaking havoc and collecting everything in sight. There are a few cutscenes- and none of them are to be taken seriously. In some there is a kid in Japanese animation that hears how the stars in the sky have disappeared, and in others the king of the cosmos is giving you a silly speech and mission. One example of these missions is when you have to remake the constellation cancer, and to do that you have to collect as many crabs as possible and put them in the sky. There is most always a mission to do because the king of the cosmos destroyed all the stars in the sky and you, his son, are sent to earth to collect stuff and remake them all. I didn't play all the way through Katamari Damacy, but from what I did play, it is a well designed, fun game unlike no other.Mon, 14 Jan 2008 13:56:45 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1684&iddiary=3589
