koalabear's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=547Alien Hominid (PS2) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 02:17:17https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3159I played this game on the Xbox 360 as an arcade game. Summary Alien Hominid is about an alien who crashed land on Earth because the FBI shot it down. You are on a journey to get it back while fight tons of agents. Gameplay You play as a little yellow alien that has a pretty small gun that takes on the FBI. Throughout the game, you are aided by these kids with power ups and they also take you from level to level from time to time. As the game progresses, you fight outrageous bosses like Robots that cry to sand mutant monsters. The art style of the game is hilarious. Your alien guy does a pelvic thrust if left not stand for a bit and the way the enemy get killed is really funny. The game is really cartoony and really adds to the gameplay. Playing the game was really a great experience. I played it with a buddy which made the game that much more better. We found ourselves constantly laughing. It got so bad that we had we had to keep pausing the game to catch our breath. Again, you fight funny enemies. The robots to monsters and from FBI agents to Soviet Russian agents. The game also have little moves that kill the agents in hilarious ways and really, the game was great. (This entry has been edited1 time. I got to fight in a few boss battles, so I was able to show off my awesome RPG skill. They make the boss battles very rewarding by showing that you won coins at the end of the battles, they just fountain out of the defeated enemy, kind of funny. I also learn new moves, which was gained by me leveling up my characters. I can now heal my party with rain. This means I can save more items, which is always a plus. The music is kind of getting to me though. At first it was fun and reminiscent but now it is becoming a bit repetitive. I blame the battle song; it doesn’t make me want to battle. I got my first start too. That was awesome, had to fight this sword thingy named Mack. He was trying to take over the Mushroom Castle, but I stopped it. That’s where I saved and stopped. Game Design I found myself taking a bit about the design in my first gamelog about the battle system and how they set up the Mario world in a RPG genre game. As I said, the game is turn based and as in any RPG, you gain levels. I think the creators of this game made a very interesting decision on what happens when you level up. Your attributes not only increase, you are able to choose to add an extra boost to either att/def, HP, or magic att/def. I really like this because it made me feel like I was involve in the creation and the growth of the characters. A really interest game design element I say. What was also cool about this game is that they keep some platform elements in the game. You solve little puzzles by going through a series of platforms and you can also jump on the enemies. Whether or not it changes the start of the battle has yet to be decided by me. I just like the idea of hurting them a bit before we get into battle. Oh, and the star power is still in the game! When I first got it, I felt invincible because I was! You can touch enemies and they are instantly defeated and you gain experience for the victory. However, with all these cool things making the game look good, there were a few things I didn’t like. The game doesn’t follow a random enemy encounter system as most RPGs have, which is not a bad thing. However, it gets a bit annoying when enemies keep coming at you and they don’t stop respawning. I like to defeat all the enemies if they are visible on the screen, but if they don’t stop respawning, it makes things a bit difficult. The music, also mentioned earlier, becomes tiresome and did change my mood. However, looking passed these minor annoyances, the game is really fun and does deserve to be in the classics list.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:47:03 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2865&iddiary=5443Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:43:38https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2865Summary You play as Mario in this RPG adventure to save the Mushroom Kingdom from The Smithy Gang and not from Bowser. You travel around the Mario world with a party and battle enemies in a turn based style system. Gameplay The game started pretty good for me, there was much humor and the story had this nice twist to right off the back. It was weird that a sword was even placed in a Mario game though. I just didn’t expect that to happen. The other thing I found weird was some of the characters and enemies that the game has. You see your classic Mario enemies like the Goombas, but then you run into K-9s and giant frogs that look intoxicated. You also get this tadpole friend that joins your party that looks like a large marshmallow with pants. Going past some of these unfamiliar characters the game itself was really fun. Though the game has the traditional turn-based battle system most RPGs have, it keeps it a bit more interactive by allowing the player to press the attack button before a character strikes to do more damage. This is actually a very essential part of the game. It was also very unique how they set up the Mario world to fit a RPG style game. For the usual MP or mana system that RPGs have, they use the Fire Flowers to power magic or special techniques which the whole party share, which makes the use of special move a bit more strategic. I really like how during battle, you get these little things, they look like some funky flower, that give you a special status effect like HP restore or the ability to attack again before the start of the next turn. Thought that was really fun. It was just really interesting how the people at Nintendo made the Mario world work for a genre that it was never been place to beforehand. Really fun and looking forward to the second run.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:43:38 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2865&iddiary=5346Crackdown (360) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 02:53:25https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2563Gameplay The second time around, i still had the same fun i had the first time, maybe even more. The farther you get in the game, the more easier and harder it gets. You become way more stronger and one hit kills are common, but you get shot at really nasty. I was loving how i can pick up a car and smash the gang members with it. And the weapons you obtain make things interesting. The game allows you only to carry two weapons at one time, so you can develop a strategy. I just pick the weapon i had the most fun with. I liked messing around with the sniper rifle but the rocket launcher was always the best. Also, the high level of agility really made the game fun. It really gave you the superhero feel. It allows you to scale higher buildings and to jump rooftops and all that crazy stuff. You got to be careful though, if you fall from too of a high place, you do get hurt. It depends on how high your agility. All in all, it is a pretty fun game to play around with. Design The game had some pretty interest gameplay elements. There was a clear relationship between the leveling system and the reward system. As i stated earlier, when you kill an enemy in a certain way, that particular skill increases. When you finally increase a level in a particular skill, you deal much more damage and become more effective in destroying your enemies. The agility was the only stat you had to increase differently that every other, but it made the game that more entertaining. To increase your agility, you had to climb building or large structure and collect these orb thingy that increased its level. At first its hard and tedious, later on, it just becomes ridiculously fun. This is what made the game for me, everything else i found pretty standard. In the game, you start of with some basic weapons like grenades, a pistol and a assault rifle. You increase your inventory of weapons by returning the weapons found in the city from the gang members. Driving in the game is also pretty standard, running over enemies is still pretty fun though, since the game has rag-doll physics. The art style add this crazy abstract feel to it. It feels cartoonist and realistic on the same style. A very surreal feel. Now that i think about it, if it wasn't for the leveling up and reward system, this game would have pretty average. Still a very fun game though. To get theSat, 09 Feb 2008 02:53:25 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2563&iddiary=4877Crackdown (360) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 02:22:37https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2563In Crackdown, you play as super soldier in an action/adventure platformer created to put an end to organized crime that had taken over the city. This was my first time actually playing Crackdown and it really had left a great impression on me. At first it seem like an ordinary San Andreas look-alike, and though it does have similar features and element, the experience was very different. You start off with some basic weapon to fight the a gang that had taken control part of the city, but you easily find out that you grow really fast in the game. The way the game rewards you is by giving you ability points to the certain skill you used to defeat your enemy. So, if you beat down an enemy, you become stronger. If you use your firearms, you become more accurate and deadly with arms. However, I had the most fun leveling up my agility. I found myself flying( ok, i was jumping) through the city, it felt really awesome. It really felt open ended since it doesn't force you to do the missions and you don't necessarily need to do them either. It a very fun game.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 02:22:37 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2563&iddiary=4842Gradius 3 (SNES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:41:13https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2257Gameplay I had high expectations when the second time to play came around. I played it with a buddy of mind to change it up a bit. We thought it had co-op but to our dismay, it didn't. It was a versus mode. It was cool though, we still played it. I was really off when playing it and it was really hard to get as into it as I did before because I had to keep switching off controllers. This meant I didn't get as far as I did in the last run. This also means that I didn't have as much fun. I knew I could of done better but it was just harder to do it when you do have to switch the controller. There was also this thing with the lives system that was different on the single player. It seemed that on versus, you start off with only one life. Then after the continue, you get the standard two lives. We found that a bit weird and confusing. It was fun seeing the way my friend reacted on tight situations and likewise for my friend to me me in tight spots. Overall, the game is very fun, very fun when you get into it. Design One of the things that I notice right off the back was that you can customize the weapons so you can pick the ones you want. This way, you can pick the weapons that fit the way you play and it can also change the strategy you use when playing. This give it much replay value. I found myself playing over a few time so I can test out the different weapon upgrades. The controls for this game are great too. First I thought that the ship flew to slow compared to the enemies, until I found out that you can upgrade your speed. It has the same shmups mechanics that other shmups but the the weapons customization does so much for the gameplay. I also really enjoyed the design for each of the levels. Each level seems to have a theme to it. The first level with the basic space battle and the second with the bubbles. I thought that was pretty creative. However, once you explored the weapons and get a taste of each of the levels, there is not much else to the game. This is the only problem i encounter in the game. You start to notice the repetitiveness of it. Still had a great time playing it though, and I do recommend it to other gamers out there looking for that old school game feel.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:41:13 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2257&iddiary=4351Gradius 3 (SNES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:08:50https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2257Summary You are a ship fighting off waves of alien space ships. Gameplay The game was really fun, but it did take me a bit to really get into the game, since I haven't played shmups in a really long time. I was dying badly right in the first level. But after I got through one continue, I ogt the hang of it and the game was on! I found myself completely sucked into the game and i became so passioned by the game that my friends that were watching me play we laughing at the way i reacted when i died or completed a level. I'll enjoyed the feeling i had when i felt that i had mastered the first level. However, as the game progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to complete each level. The farthest that I made it in the game was at the end of the 3rd level and the only reason that i made was because I had all the upgrades available. I felt so awesome and so invincible when i had it, it was one of the greatest feeling I had in a long time. This is a very very great game and it deserves to be called a classic and recommend it to everyone!Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:08:50 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2257&iddiary=4297ブルードラゴン Blue Dragon (360) - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 03:00:56https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1667GAMEPLAY As I played Blue Dragon the second time around, I found myself still enjoying it, maybe even more than the first time. The story didn't go much further than what it had the first time around, but I got into my first boss battle and it was quite exciting. During this time, i was at a higher level than before with more skills, so it made the battle pretty interesting. I was fighting this dinosaur thing with armor on its back. It was pretty cool because I was able to steal a Silver Bracelet from it and I had to figure out its weakness. Ok, I didn't have to figure out its weakness, it told me where it was half way during the battle, but i did have to figure out how to hit it, since normal attacks couldn't reach its head. But yeah, after that battle, what started to excite me was the leveling. As I reached higher levels, new skills were learned and new classes were opened. Being able to find new items on the map still was quite fun, but it did become a bit tiresome following the outline of the map to make sure that I looked everywhere. It was cool when I found xp boosts though, that made it worth the work. And finding poo (not just any poo, golden poo) after a battle still put a smile on my face. I ended up in an area where a puzzle was in need of solving. I was stuck for a bit, but it's nothing that a little exploring couldn't handle. The puzzle was hard enough to stall me a bit, but it was nothing harsh. So yeah, I was still into the game quite a bit, and still fun. DESIGN What I really enjoyed about Blue Dragon was the leveling up system. As you battle enemies, you gain experience and SP. Experience is for your character and effects your HP, MP, and other attributes. SP is experience given to the shadow guardian and effects some of the attributes of the character but also the new skills and classes gained. So instead of buying a new skill from merchants or already have a fixed number of skills, you gained them as you grow. Also, when you change classes, say from a black mage to a sword master, you can still keep the skills learn as a black mage. This isn't the first time I've seen this though, but I do enjoy this structure. The battles feel pretty smooth and don't get that boring. Every action goes into this animation that feels pretty cinematic. It follows system where the players take turns depending on their speed (I guess) or how long it takes to do certain attacks, depending on how long you charge it. And again, the poo presents never fail to make the victory that much more sweeter. The art style for the game isn't anything new, but is fun so see. The creatures look unique and each present a different mood when entering battles. I often laugh when i fight against the Poo Snakes (don't what's the obsession with poo) and when I run into the Fat Rat, I mean business. The way each of the areas looked weren't that great, and the some of the maps where pretty big, which made it a bit boring trying to find stuff. However, overall, the presentation of the game was unique and different from most titles offered on the Xbox 360 and was refreshing to see. (This entry has been edited1 time. Their attempt leads them to discover the real evil that is not only facing their village, but the world. Later on, they meet up with other characters and try to stop a madman who threatens the planet. Blue Dragon take the turn based battle system and combines a system that allows you to customize each of the characters way you want them. Blue Dragon started off pretty slow for me, as it tried to build a story. I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it much since the plot wasn't that capturing. It kind of followed that boy saving the world story line, however in this case, it's three kids, some bat thingy, and a pirate using their shadow guardians to save world. Also, as the characters presented their persona, they seemed a bit artificial. It made it hard for me to connect to the smart kid, Jiro, since he sticks with his calculations or to the leader, Shu, since he seems overly determined to do the next action. Kluke on the other hand seems to be the normal 16 kid in the game. I don't know, she's pretty cool, with her black magic powers. However, the humor and gameplay of the game is what got me into the game. I love the gameplay in this game. It combines your typical RPG elements and mixes them with other games elements to create a pretty refreshing gaming experience. It allows free roaming around the world map, something i haven't seen in a while. Maybe I just been playing the wrong games. It also take away the random enemy encounter thingy by replacing it with visible enemies on the screen. However, it keeps it interesting by allowing random creatures to appear on the map, so you can't just defeat everything on the map. And when an enemy drops an item, instead of leaving a treasure chest, it leaves poo. I found it hilarious that when you examine it, it goes *squish squish*. Good times. They also allow the player to find items on the map that are not bound to the treasure chest by examining little details on the map like looking under a pile of rocks or into a dead tree. That made me want to explore every little thing in every new area I came to. Thought that made the game a bit more fun. What i also liked about Blue Dragon was the way the characters develop was they level up. As your character gets stronger, new skills and classes open up. You can switch between them and even keep other skills as you change classes. This meant that I can play the game in multiple ways and it's all cool. I really like that idea. Overall, i enjoyed playing my first hour of Blue Dragon and I can't wait to continue so... I'll get back to playing.Sun, 13 Jan 2008 17:52:14 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1667&iddiary=3397
