merlends's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=572Half-Life 2 (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 05:31:06https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3193Gameplay: The second hour of gameplay was similar to the first, however the developers were able to maintain the game fresh while keeping the game the same. My emotional state became heightened as I got more engrossed in the story line. The enemies become scarier and the plot becomes more interesting as you start to find out more and more things about the game world. Design: The main aspect of Half-life 2 that is paramount to the design is the physics. The gravity gun is a great example of this. It allows you to throw almost all objects in the game and pull them towards you. In general the game allows you to interact with almost everything in the game. The levels in the game are what really keeps the player coming back for more. The game is almost as if it is made into sections. Each section has something else to offer, i.e. new enemies, guns, or layouts. The games reward structure is advancing through levels, discovering more about the story and just killing bad guys and staying alive.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 05:31:06 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3193&iddiary=6004Half-Life 2 (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 04:57:10https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3193Summary: Half Life 2 is a first person action adventure shooter game. The character controls Gordon Freeman who must battle his way through various levels, collecting various types of weapons and complete level challenges such as flipping switches or figuring out where to go next. Gameplay: My emotional state in the first hour of half-life 2 was greatly influenced by the ability of the game to immerse one into the game world right from the start. It plays out like an indepth movie in certain parts. I felt engrossed in the game and it was hard to stop playing at many points. The games story and character development are not explicitly told, which is a great aspect of the gameworld that draws you in. The game is just as if you were Gordon Freeman and you were having to figure things out on your own, from other people, signs etc. The Gameplay was fun and provided new challenges with tons of types of enemies and weapons that provide many facets of play. The game isn't really a social interaction game. I found that playing the game at night with headphones on really immersed me in the game and made the game much more exciting and scary.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 04:57:10 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3193&iddiary=5998Wii Sports (Wii) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:57:13https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2861Entry 2: Gameplay: The second time I played the game wasn't much different from the first because the game doesn't change from play session to play session. Although by playing single player you can make earn your character pro mode which, I suppose gives you prestige while playing against friends. The game is interesting because everyone handles the wii mote differently and its also fun to get up and move around with your friends. The social interactions were similar friends would trade off to play the different games and laugh, the game has great replay value. Design: The most innovative element of the game is the wii mote. I don't think this game would be popular at all if there wasn't motion sensor technology and the player was forced to use a standard controller. The game is not necessarily what keeps the player interested, it is the social environment which it creates that is fun for the players. They designed the game well to appeal to almost anyone. The game is designed well enough to be sensitive to the players input so that it isn't random and the players can vary in skill level which is important for replay value.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:57:13 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2861&iddiary=5370Wii Sports (Wii) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:44:43https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2861Entry 1: Summary: Wii sports is a revolutionary sports game that uses the wii mote (controller) to simulate the actions of the sports with motion sensing technology. The games included are tennis, bowling, boxing, golf, and baseball. Although you can play single player, the objective seems to be to interact with friends through competition. Gameplay: Wii sports was fun to play because it makes the player feel like they are playing the actual sport. The wii mote, is fun to use because you are swinging the "bat" or bowling the "ball". The social interactions of the game are great. Players of all ages can enjoy this game. I played all of the games with my friends and the competitive environment is intense even though the game is light hearted and fun. The characters in the game are fun, because you create them so you get attached to them and it makes the playing experience more personal. There really isn't a plot in the game it is just a few mini games.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:44:43 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2861&iddiary=5348Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 15:17:47https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2585Entry 2 Gameplay: The game play wasn't much different the second time around, however I did try the single player which did change the game slightly. There are different types of challenges, for example fighting 30 yoshi's in one level, however the gameplay is essentially the same. The game can keep it's interest because there is a different strategy to use for every character, and a different strategy to use against every character. The player must try to use fighting attacks to increase the damage on the opponent. This damage makes the opponent fly farther when hit, increasing their odds of being thrown out of the level. The player may use any of 3 special moves. One usually helps to get the player back onto the level by providing an extra jump. The other two are usually attacks, however not always. The player may also use physical attacks and ground as well as airborn strategies. Design: The game was designed very well. The characters attributes are generally well balanced at novice to almost expert levels. However at expert levels it becomes clear that some characters are clearly better than others, such as Pikachu, Fox, and Kirby. However the games ability to provide a balanced fighting game amongst most skill levels is impressive. The button scheme is intuitive and allows the character to be focused on the game instead of the controller. The levels each present a different problem or advantage to every character so it is fun to try out different levels. The game is fun for kids even though it is a fighting game, the tone of the game is light and cartoony which creates an environment almost any gamer can enjoy.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 15:17:47 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2585&iddiary=4914Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 15:09:16https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2585Summary: Super smash brothers in an unconventional fighting game. The player chooses between characters from previous video games and uses their customized moves to knock the other fighters off of the fighting arena. Gameplay: Super smash brothers allows a player to become attached to their character. Because of characters from previous games you can pick your favorite much more easily than in regular fighting games. Also because the objective is not go destroy life, there are much more options for strategy. I feel fast paced competition while playing this game, also I have never had more fun competing with friends than in super smash brothers 64. There are a multitude of different ways to be good at the game that there are surprises around every corner. This is the kind of game that one can play for hours.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 15:09:16 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2585&iddiary=4913Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:18:27https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241just a note: I know you mentioned something about paragraphs and it being confusing however in these log entries I tried to indent and it came out with no indentations...Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:18:27 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241&iddiary=4309Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:17:22https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241Gameplay: The second hour I played super mario was still interesting. The game was able to maintain excitement by varying the types of enemies you encounter. This adds a higher level of difficulty to play in harder levels. It also challenges you to think out side of the box and use different strategies that you previously used. I was not able to maintain interest in the game for the second hour all the way through. The game is to similar to keep you playing for an extremely long time. However the similarity in it is good enough to always keep you coming back. Design: The innovative elements in this game are the map movement for levels. This is very different from the linear gameplay in the previous Mario games. The differentiation in levels while keeping the game still the same is a good design element. I can imagine it would be hard to keep such a basic game so interesting. The tone of the game world is fun, the game is not scary but players become attached to the character and often get very upset when they die. The reward structure allows the player to experience new levels with new abilities. The reward of gaining lives to allow to keep playing is also pivotal. In this sense it is almost like an arcade game where the objective is to just get as far through the game as you can with the amount of lives that you have which also keeps the game interesting.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 02:17:22 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241&iddiary=4308Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:29:37https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241Summary: Super Mario 3 for the NES is a platformer similar to the previous Mario games. The player controls the character and try's to reach the end of the level, which is reached by running from left to right. To reach the end of the level the player must navigate through obstacles such as blocks or platforms which the player can navigate through by jumping. The player must also navigate through enemies which can be killed by throwing picked up shells, or jumping on top of them. Once the player beats a level they may choose to move on to the next level on a map which contains other levels. In some situations you may choose which level you wish to play next. Gameplay: This game was interesting because it always presents a fun challenge. It is also a fresh change from the earlier Mario's. The introduction of more power ups than the mushrooms made the game much more fun. If you work hard enough at playing well you can gain the power to fly for example. The game also rewards you at the end of each level by trying to use a slot machine like device to get similar shapes to gain lives once you obtain three. The player can also get power-ups that can be transfered throughout levels. I enjoy being able to control more aspects of the game in this sense. Each level has it's own flavor, as well as each "world" that changes when you move from map to map. Also boss fights creates excitement because of a harder challenge and a change of pace in thinking. People enjoy watching Mario because it's a fast paced game. Obstacles are always present and there is always a chance for the player to die at any point making the game exciting at all times. Because when you die the level starts over people watching general want a "turn". In this sense each level is like its own obstacle. Because of this the game is very social, when I was playing the controller was handed off between people over 20 times. Another aspect that might be missed is the music of the game. The music for each level keeps the player interested and is good enough to sing to yourself. I can say that 80 percent of people can sing a mario song off of the top of their head. It makes me feel more involved and interested in the game.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:29:37 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2241&iddiary=4273Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PS3) - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 02:42:29https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1707Second Game Log for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Gameplay: For the second log entry I figured that I would focus on the multiplayer aspect of the game instead of the single player. I had high hopes for the multiplayer portion of the game because I was so impressed with the gameplay of the single player. The initial set up of the multiplayer looked impressive. The games were fun and exciting. This excitement came from the fast paced action. In team deathmatch, players play on two teams of 6 that work together to kill the other team. When a player dies they respawn and the cycle continues until one team achieves the score required for victory for this setting 750. This type of play reminded me of the popular game Counter Strike, which I enjoyed immensely, and for the first time since Counter Strike I felt like I had found a great online first person shooter. Because there are so many different strategies within the levels and because every person has their own unique style of play the situations and possibilities are endless. Its easy to get into a game where the play is so fast paced, if you die it doesn't matter because you respawn quickly enough to keep the game interesting. This style of play kept me engrossed in the game because I could always try a different strategy. What I find interesting about this game is that people enjoy to watch other people play, because no one person plays the same. With level variations and different team members I am able to keep my interest in the game for at least two hours. The game has a reward structure that rewards you for doing well by giving your team points and promoting your rank which allows you to get different guns, grenades and modes of play. I find myself not only playing for fun, but playing to have the ability to have even more fun, if that makes sense. I am a fan of skill based competition games which is also why I enjoy this game. Whether you live or die really depends on your skill level successfully making a first person shooter where there are many variations of skill is a difficult task for developers. The fast paced competition is a great aspect of this game. Social interactions were good while watching but I found my friends wanting to play with me so we could coordinate our own strategies together. However, there is no way to play online with your friends in the Playstation version on the same console. On the Xbox 360 you may play on one console online with your friends and the lack of this feature greatly disappointed me. I cannot understand how the developers left this feature out of the game. To me this was the main aspect of the game that I was hoping to have. Multiplayer by yourself is fun for a certain amount of time, but playing with your friends never gets boring to me, if its a good game. Design: The main design aspect that I find great about this game is the way the developers were able to balance different strategies (hiding places, map movement, etc), weapons (guns, grenades, etc.) and powerups (extra speed, extra damage, air strikes, etc.). This allows for players to have great variances in tactics, even if their skill levels are the same. It is also easy to notice differences in skill levels between players. The fact that players cannot play together on the same console almost ruins the online multiplayer for me. For me the social aspect of this game had potential to compare to the amazing social play of halo. Level design however is incredible, each type of area within levels have their own advantages and disadvantages, hiding in building provides cover from the outside however allows you to easily be flanked while your back is turned for example. Their are many different areas and strategies to choose from within levels. The levels are varied for different types of game play and different amounts of players and this allows for a multitude of game play variations. The ability to make this game your own is an amazing quality of this game. The tone of the game is realistic and modern. Just as in the single player game the player is drawn into the realism design of each scenario. I am regretfully forced to give the online aspect of the game a 3 out of 5 for the ridiculous lack of social interaction, if I have friends over taking turns is not half as fun as playing together. The rest of the online multiplayer I, however, find to be nearly flawless. With a 3 out of 5 for the multiplayer and a 5 out of 5 for the single player I give the game a total of 4 out of 5.Tue, 15 Jan 2008 02:42:29 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1707&iddiary=3772
