Obsidious's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=625Soul Caliber III (PS2) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:45:57https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2883Gameplay After playing longer I have developed some combinations or sequences of moves that allow the game to run smoother. While playing this way game play does not stop even for a second between victories. The game becomes more franticly paced although skill with blocking does keep the game from being too fast. I start to enjoy the game more, because I can now perform some of the more complex moves such as Ivy's summoning which causes a large amount of damage and more importantly very tantalizing effects. However the button mashing strategy is too powerful because the emphasis on speed over skillful button pressing counts for too much in this game. Although counters do help maintain a balance. However especially with voldo when you discover one move that works perfectly you can easily win if you get through your opponents initial defenses. Design The characters are made to move extraordinarily quickly and attack quickly to keep game play fast. That is about the only notable part of the design because otherwise it's simply a common fighter game with triple cardinality. The graphics are good but not notable, the game play is basic, and the game is not progressive in any way in multi-player.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:45:57 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2883&iddiary=5442Soul Caliber III (PS2) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:33:56https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2883Game play I really enjoyed playing this game because of the gripping multi player. The multi player game can be played for hours on end because each game is unique. Because it takes so long to defeat the opponent there is much option for the choices players make to change each outcome of the game. Although only one person wins or a draw, the percents of health between players changes. Allow with so many characters, 42, the amount of replay value is large. Fighting against my friend who was in the room with me, no online play, also gave a more real competitive nature to the game. Along with some cheating... Design I played the multi player portion of the game with one of my friends. This section involves a choice between many characters each with their own special moves and talents. Very much like Soul Calibur 2 the game has two characters battle each other in a 1v1, first to 3 kills, setting. The characters have 3 types of attacks: vertical, horizontal, and special moves. The horizontal attacks are able to hit characters even when they strafe, while vertical attacks are more powerful. The special moves vary depending on the character, Ivy for one has an attack that strikes from behind the enemy. In addition to attacks the player can block attacks coming from the front or side but has to choose between high, center, and low block each one corresponding to a like attack. The player can also move to avoid attacks and use in conjuntion with attacks. The visuals in this game are also pleasing although admittedly to a majority of males. The backgrounds are interesting but not compared to the characters many of which are scantedly clad women.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:33:56 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2883&iddiary=5424Baldur's Gate Two: Throne of Bhaal (PC) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 07:24:01https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581Game play The use of warrior characters is mainly to create a buffer between the enemies and the more fragile characters, normally heavy armor and melee weapons serve well. Thieves serve a less combat intensive purpose, catching traps and opening locks, but can serve as backstabbers and ranged. Mages serve as the most powerful offensive characters with devastating spells. Clerics serve as healers and support, acting as the mage or warrior role if needed. A good party has a thief, mage, cleric, and 2 warriors + one extra character for narrative value. By multi-classing less characters are required leaving room for more "fun" characters. It is also possible to win the game with only the main character.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 07:24:01 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581&iddiary=4906Baldur's Gate Two: Throne of Bhaal (PC) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 07:15:54https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581Game play The game play of this game is amazingly complex and the replay value is infinite. The many combinations of classes and skills allows for over 50 different games each one taking between 2 months to 2 weeks. While the game world doesn't change between the different classes other than a sub quest that is different depending if you choose mage, warrior, thief, or cleric, the gameworld is so huge that It is nearly impossible to discover every sub quest without playing the game over 10 times. (I personally have finished this game over 50 times). The graphics for this game are amazingly good for age it was created and cinematics are frequent. This aspect combined with the effort put into the plot and storyline make this game one if not the best game I have ever played. The difficulty settings of this game allow for a challenge no matter how talented a player becomes. This allows the intricate combinations of spells and melee/ranged weapons to be both fun and necessary. Design This game is one of the most innovative games because of the limitless possibility of the genre, along with the enormous effort put into its creation. The only game that dampers this innovation is it's prequel. The game never fails to challenge, as long as the player attempts to play through the game with more than a leisurely pace, especially with the expansion pack. The conflict between the nemesis and main character is augmented by excellent writing and enemies that inspire loathing. Levels are in abundance and each one contains more than can be found after many play throughs. The reward for beating this game is as to be expected of a game that takes months to play with never a dull moment, except maybe the first level.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 07:15:54 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581&iddiary=4905Baldur's Gate Two: Throne of Bhaal (PC) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 06:53:08https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581Summary This game is a 3rd person 2D Role playing game. This epic game leads you through the trials of the main character while he or she chases after his/ her soul. The player has the choice of many characters to create a 1-6 person party in addition to creating the main character from a number of classes with many different skills. This game is set in a medieval armed, magic wielding fantasy world. The Player controls all the movements and attacks of the party against many monsters.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 06:53:08 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2581&iddiary=4904Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:28:43https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2212For the second session of Smash bros 64 I played single player. Gameplay I found the single player a lot easier than the vs. play, as to be expected. The single player consisted of a series of levels each with a different goal. Most were battles with a single character but a few had team battles, a giant monster, a race, or a puzzle. The variety of this game play impressed me, and I enjoyed myself despite finding hardly a challenge. The rewards for completing these challenges were little medals that despite having no use were quite rewarding. The most amusing sub game for the single player was a puzzle map that each character had (each one different) in which the player had to hit 10 different targets, placed in odd places so as to require the player to use the special moves of all the characters in a surprisingly difficult situation (at times). This puzzle acted as a tutorial of sorts for each character while remaining challenging; a difficult thing to find. Design This game was designed to be the ultimate player v. player game. Combining characters from multiple games, the game brings a sense of familiarity and personal attachment. players pit themselves against each other defending the honor of their favorite characters. This fun game allows for weird combinations of characters in which players can fight without as much luck involved because of the ability to defend oneself in addition to damaging others, unlike most shooters. And no 1 hit kills thanks to the damage system of percents. The shared 3rd person view prevents people from sneaking up on others, and a combination of worlds and special moves prevents many camping opportunities. The game is very challenging, as you can always get better, and Innovative, so every game is different. Because of this I found myself never losing interest in the game and I am quite surprised at how good a game Smash Bros 64 turned out to be. The game is also quite complex for such an old game.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:28:43 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2212&iddiary=4272Super Smash Brothers (N64) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:30:01https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2212While playing with skilled people Smash bros can be a very challenging game. However after a few hours a noticeable difference in learned skill can be noticed. I played this game for a short while in vs. mode against a skilled player who only plays one character, Link, and a skilled player who plays many characters including Kirby. Although this game seems like a intricate game, in comparison to Super Smash Bros Melee for Gamecube the 64 version has many differences in gameplay. The major difference is the simplicity that allows for skilled players to play the game with "perfection" preventing a new player from even coming close to winning a game. However despite this setback the gameplay is amazingly fun and addicting. I used two players Samus and Nes, two characters which were advised to me by my friends. Gameplay The worlds in Super Smash Bros 64 are less interactive than Smash Bros Melee however this allows for more P v. P focus and less random occurances. I thought that this was an improvement because it focus players to avoid disappointments that come with not understanding whether a win occured because of skill or luck. I also found the maps to be smaller and less running/sniping was possible, I believe that my companions enjoyed this more but I personally, with the Samus character, found this to make gameplay much harder. A consistency between 64 and gamecube versions is my dislike for Items, They made the game more random and at times impossibly annoying. The gameplay consists of pitting multiple opponents against one another each with different moves and specials. This combination of characters and skill levels makes gameplay different every time. The characters have either purely close combat moves or a combination of close combat and ranged, this makes gameplay for each character extremely dynamic and people usually specialize in one or 2 characters. The benefits of this strategy are more evident than in Super Smash Melee because since each character has less special moves, any character can take any other character with relative ease.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:30:01 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2212&iddiary=4226Assassin's Creed (360) - Mon, 14 Jan 2008 02:08:43https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1779Assassin's is a simple game that tells a story about a ex-assassin bartender who Is kidnapped by templars who plan to search his mind for an item by making him re-live his ancestors memories. The game requires you to investigate "marks" before killing them. The game also has side quests that allow you to influence the citizens view of you i.e. saving citizens from guards. The game has beautiful graphics that work perfectly with the excellent camera that is almost perfect. The only downside to this game is its simplicity and repetitive game which allows the game to literally be played without watching the screen as long as someone tells you the direction to go. Combat can be won by holding a single button (block) which makes the player invincible and while "invincible" pressing X rapidly to kill any AI that attacks you, this in combination with an auto lock on means combat can be done without sight. However despite this set back, I found Assassin's creed to be an addicting game because of the freedom allowed, reminiscent of GTA. Also the camera with great graphics makes the birds eye views of Jerusalem and leaping assassinations to die for. The game I found to lack innovation because of how similar it is to GTA but with swords. But the graphics are so beautiful that Assassin's creed provides what GTA could not, also I personally prefer the Plot. Assassinations with the hidden dagger provide all the reward required to keep a player playing for hours. I have yet to finish the game but I am impressed with how much longer this game is that most others. (This entry has been edited1 time.
