mackenzi's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=662World of Warcraft (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 03:48:28https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3186GAMEPLAY I have played 8 more levels and have fallen even more in love with this Blood Elf version of the pally. I have traveled to a new area that is much darker than the area I had been fighting and questing in earlier. I have also ventured into the main Blood Elf City. It is very expansive and I learned my professions there. I am excited and hope to enjoy it even more later on. In the new area called the Ghostlands I have been faced with new quests and new monsters. Monsters of elite standing meaning they do extra damage and/or have extra life but yield more experience for killing them. The quest rewards are also getting better and I am looking forward to a blue (Rare) item that will give you an even greater magic bonus than green (Uncommon) items. This new area also seems much more expansive and I am playing as part of a group were we can work together to deal damage, add buffs, or heal. It was great fun. GAME DESIGN One thing that I love about this game is the aspect of the professions. My main professions are enchanting and mining. Enchanting so that I can give magical bonus' to my items, and mining so I can make some money. You can only have two main professions at a time. Yet you can have as many secondary professions as you would like, but there are only 3. It is a great aspect and adds a lot to the game. Another aspect that I was curious about was how they were going to solve the pally dilemma of using only maces. The pallies of the Blood Elves call themselves Blood Knights which not only sounds really great but also gives a bit of reason behind why they use swords, which can be inferred from quest dialog. One of the main aspects of this game that I love though is how it never ends. It is always being added onto by Blizzard programmers and I am excited to see the new content in play from the new patch, Wrath of the Linch King. This has been one of the best started characters I have made thus far in the game and I hope that it will continue being fun until level 70 or 80. Depending on when the new patch is released for this ever expanding game.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 03:48:28 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3186&iddiary=5985World of Warcraft (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 03:29:41https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3186SUMMARY One of the worlds most expansive MMORPGs. Played online you are either an Alliance or a Horde member, battle monsters and complete quests. GAMEPLAY This log will be about starting out as a Blood Elf Paladin. I started a Blood Elf Paladin, pally, I was a bit skeptical going in because I have had bad experience starting pallies before. But to my surprise I ended up having a lot of fun leveling. In my first session of play I got to about level 10. It was a lot of fun getting used to the new controls, as I am used to a Shaman's talents, and it didn't take too long to get a hang of it, especially at a low level. The story for Blood Elves is a great one and starting any Blood Elf you get a brief synopses of why they are part of the Horde and what made them the way they are. It is an exciting story and I was surprised to see that the pally start weapon was a sword instead of a mace. It is classic knowledge that Paladins gave up the sword so I was a bit taken aback. I am curious to find out why they have swords. The beginning quests for Blood Elves are quite unlike much of the rest of the Horde's. Their quests are have a bit more violent connotations and involve the use of an ability that steels mana from other creatures. It is an exciting new experience and I hope I will enjoy in in the later levels.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 03:29:41 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3186&iddiary=5980Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:53:10https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2803GAMEPLAY I continued through the game and played through the Goron dungeon. I fell in love with these characters the first time I met them. They had a nice personality that I could relate to as a kid and now. They bring a sense of a carefree time before Ganon threatened the land of Hyrule, and they bring certain cuteness to the game. There was a lot of running around from place to place so that I could get access to the Goron dungeon and I ended up needing certain bracers that gave me the strength to pick up bombs. It was really exciting to open up a whole new world of secret rooms and the like that were once inaccessible from the lack of bombs. I am also very pleased with the fact that there hasn’t been anything too stalling while playing trough the game. I am able to more or less just play through without getting extremely lost and disoriented. Whenever I get caught up and can’t find out where to go for too long in a game I get real upset and just stop playing. I haven’t don’t that with this game and I don’t think I will, for a while at least. GAME DESIGN The design of this game must have taken an extremely huge amount of time and effort on the teams part. The world of Hyrule had various side quests and areas to explore which lead to a rich game that had great graphics (for the time) and a strong plot backing it up. It is no wonder this game made it onto the classics list. As I progressed through the game I would constantly receive little rewards for my hardships and energy, and every once and a while I would get a larger reward. This was a great way to keep me going through the game. I would always be opening doors or figuring out what I had to do to make a path appear trying to find what is on the other side. Whenever there was a chest I would get a slight leap in my mind and become a little giddy. The only qualms I have with this game is how often Navi, your fairy, interrupts your game-play. I guess it’s a good system however because Navi doesn’t fully stop the game whenever you have to talk to her but shouts at you and you just have to press Up-C to hear her. Navi would then tell you where to go or what you need to do next. While I didn’t need this so much because I we playing straight through and didn’t forget what people had told me, I could see how if I didn’t play for a couple days I would forget and Navi’s comments would be much appreciated. Aside from that I was extremely happy with the amount of cut scenes that where there, but not overpowering. Great game and I am happy to have a chance to play it once again.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:53:10 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2803&iddiary=5449Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 00:55:36https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2803SUMMARY Like all Zelda games you play as Link and lead him around in the world of Hyrule. You start as child Link then about 1/3 of the way in change into adult Link. GAMEPLAY This game starts out and I am instantly pulled in. You are the only boy in the village that doesn’t have a fairy buddy. But right when you start the game is when you get your fairy and your adventure starts. The characters that you meet early in the game vary quite a bit. Saria and Mido are the first people you meet after your fairy, Navi. Saria is a wise girl who gives you support and eventually you’re first Ocarina, along with a song that will help you throughout the game. In contrast Mido is an indignant self proclaimed leader of the tribe you start out as part of, he comes off as obtuse but you soon realize that he is trying to keep everyone safe, even if he is a bit rude about it. Your first mission is to save the Great Deku Tree from evil so being eco-friendly I was happy to help save a tree from being destroyed. As I progressed through the level I was introduced to new items and actions I could do and use to get myself through the level. This is one of the most fun games that I have played that incorporates mind games and action fights. It often happens that some of the puzzles you have to solve in games are too hard and just get aggravating but in this game there was a good balance. This game had a great flow to it as well, each piece of the puzzle helped you with the next one. So I was eager to see what the next piece of the puzzle was and how it would help me out later in the game. It has been a while since I have played this game and can’t remember what comes next quite well so I can’t wait to see what awaits at I think is the Water Temple.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 00:55:36 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2803&iddiary=5294Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - Sat, 09 Feb 2008 00:35:41https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2481GAMEPLAY In the game a common side quest is a “hunt” where you go get a reward for killing certain monsters in the world. The first two I completed where fairly easy and I was happy I worked at them. The third one however was rather aggravating. After getting the monster about half way out of life he would run off to a different corner of the area you are in, usually with other mobs there. So in order to even have a chance at beating him I had to clear the whole area of any monsters. After doing this he still is a very hard fight, and after I got him to almost 1 hp he does some sort of attack that damages me for 1000 hp. This was extremely aggravating for me. First off I only have about 180 hp at my level, second it took so much time to clear that area and I had earned all the experience points, money, and license points for doing that. Then after all that I didn’t go back to town to save my progress because then the area would just be full of monsters again so I died lost all the LP’s, money and XP that I had taken so long to get. I stopped trying to kill that monster and continued on with the main story-line. After being so frustrated with the hunt I was happy to be back on track of the story-line and found it much easier to follow the map and advance through the story. However in the second hour I played most of it was taken up by the hunt for the monster so I didn’t get too much farther into the story of the game. That whole hour was just about wasted and that is really frustrating for me, but I guess I’ll just continue on with the story and go back for that monster later in the game. DESIGN The design of this game is quite unique. It’s similar to the other Final Fantasys, I think, from what I’ve watched of them, but the combat style seems a bit different. But I like it more than the previous style. Instead of going to a cut screen you are there and there is a bar that represents your attack or your cast it is a really neat way to set it up. The graphics are also quite amazing especially in the cut scenes. It may not be as exciting to everyone else but the last console I really played on for an extended period of time was N64 so PS 2 graphics are years ahead of that, but the cut scenes for the game were fairly well placed and timed. They advanced the story and plot while keeping my attention. As I play through the game I find myself growing more and more attached to the main character, Vaan, and his relationships to the other characters of the game. Any game that brings me into the story is exciting and makes me want to continue playing. By doing a good job on the design and story of this game the designers will make me want to purchase the next game in the Final Fantasy Series. If I could change anything about the game it would be the hunts. The hunts are segmented by level of difficulty and the first 3 hunts were all level 1 yet the 3 hunt I was unable to beat and got really frustrated with so if I could change anything it would be correctly distributing the difficulty settings on the hunts or making the monster easier to defeat. If that had been part of the main story-line I most likely would have just given up on the game, which is a good design technique. This is because if a player can’t beat a side quest it isn’t that big of a deal because they can continue on through the story and have something to do and come back to that side quest later, after they gain more techniques and power. Overall I must say this game is a great one so far. The reward structure helps in making it so, there are levels you can obtain as well as licenses you get by having the licenses it makes it so you can customize each character in your party to do exactly what you want with their skills. I am whole heartily enticed with this game and am now going to get back to it.Sat, 09 Feb 2008 00:35:41 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2481&iddiary=4755Final Fantasy XII (PS2) - Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:59:40https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2481SUMMARY From what I can tell thus far a great game, it is an RPG with what seems to be a huge world of play. You control a character that progresses through the game by advancing in levels skills and story-lines, well made story lines. GAMEPLAY This is my first time actually seriously playing any of the Final Fantasy games. I must say I wish I had started sooner. The game starts with an amazingly designed cinematic to draw me into the story. The first bit of the game is an excellent way to start it off. Instead of being the main character you are another random soldier. By making you this soldier the designers where able to give you the back story to your real character’s situation. I was able to play along and add to the story as I was moving around. It was a great feeling to discover new ways to go. Of course at the time I didn’t know I would soon be switching characters so I was a little surprised but happy that I was part of the history. I really enjoyed the story line that the first twenty minutes of the game presented, there were certain moments that I wasn’t sure what exactly was going on but I was usually able to figure the story out if I thought about what they had said. But I did think they may have gone a bit overboard with the amount of cinematics that were right there in the beginning. It was good to establish they plot and progress the story, but they didn’t need to have some of the stuff they put in there. However, I was pretty mesmerized by the level of detail the creators put into the cut scenes. I really enjoyed how the people of the game spoke instead of having scroll text, that is kind of hard to come by. I was a bit surprised by the number of people I could talk to within the main city. Not having played any of the Final Fantasy games before I wasn’t sure the level of NPC interactions I could achieve. This game showed me that even though it wasn’t online there were still quite a few people to interact with and side quests to enhance my game play. The only real qualm I have with the game is it was bit hard to defeat some of the monsters that I was forced to face, and I had to look online to find out how to use my “magicks.” Of course maybe if I had paid more attention when I was getting told things by NPCs I would have been fine. But I was able to figure it out and use them in the end and I am really enjoying the different “magicks” you get and strategies to use them and the certain skills you obtain.Fri, 08 Feb 2008 22:59:40 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2481&iddiary=4699Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:34:11https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2225GAMEPLAY So tanks are fun to drive. Its always cool when you're able to drive a tank in a game. No one can touch you and it rocks hardcore. I wasn't really expecting to be able to drive around it them the first time I played this game so it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. I also find myself wanted to go farther in the game, you know to save the hot Russian chick/the day, and with my increasing arsenal of weapons and gadgets I am able to rock the socks off most anyone. Its pretty much really rad. DESIGN The design for this game is the bees knees. Each level is completely different, even when you have to go back to somewhere you have already been they spice it up a bit. I found myself getting into the story which I guess isn't saying that much as I am pretty into James Bond in general. The different levels of difficulty really play into this games replay value. Each level has three different settings and objectives the harder you go the more that has to be done, so you can play this game three times each time different. Then after that you have multi-player. Within multi-player you can apply effects like paint ball or DK mode if you want to spice things up. I'm sure there are more I just haven't beaten enough to be sure of them all. I think one of my favorite things about this game are the cut-scenes so often games will go overboard with cuts or instructions this one seemed to have a nice balance, it answered the questions that formed in my head when I completed some of the levels but didn't go overboard, of course the game makers probably has some help from the movie, assuming everyone who plays this game would have seen the movie so kind of already no the story. It was a fun play great design and I hope to see more like it.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 01:34:11 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2225&iddiary=4277Goldeneye 007 (N64) - Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:24:00https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2225SUMMARY FPS for N64 heavily based off the James Bond movie, Goldeneye. Has both single player and multi-player options, with an array of weapons, levels and "cheats/adds." GAMEPLAY Starts off with the first level and you are James Bond that alone makes me super happy to play this classic. It seems to be set up much like the movie and sticks pretty close to that story line. So nothing thus far has been too surprising. I played a ways into the levels before switching over to multi-player for a bit to have a fun couple rounds with my friends. Single player is really well done. There are several levels of difficulty and in the easy and medium levels offer a bit of help on the aiming, seeing as how this is a console game that is extremely helpful. For the varying levels of difficulty there are also more objectives within the level that you have to complete. So the harder you set it the more badass and Bond-like you feel. In fact on the first level there is quite a bit of difficulty trudging you way under a dam to find a control room, with enemies the whole way. It's quite an experience. Multi-player is pretty sweet too. You can select different types of weapons you can use and can go to various levels depending on which ones you have unlocked in single player mode. Its good fun to challenge a nearby friend to a friendly game of shoot each other.Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:24:00 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2225&iddiary=4221Starcraft (PC) - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 01:32:50https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1844GAMEPLAY After playing more of this game, I start to get more and more involved in the story. The game is paralleling historical events namely the Civil War, there is even a level called New Gettysburg. Plot twists and turns inspire you to fight for what is right, be it Zerg, Protoss, or even your own race Terran. I haven't finished the Terran campaign as of yet but I think i will soon and I am getting very excited to play as both Zerg and Protoss. I have tried various strategies to complete the levels each have their strengths and weaknesses. One of my favorite ways to advance through the ranks of the enemy is: have a building unit, SCV for Terran, build turrets along and have your tanks set up for long range and high damage. I also like building a lot of Wraiths and cloaking them to sneak up and kill stray units. Another neat aspect to the game is the heroes. Almost each level has a hero in it that has to survive to complete the level. Just before I wrote this GameLog I failed my first mission. I wasn't paying attention and one of my hero died. It said mission failed and this music came on that was not at all inspiring, it was like I had lost a friend almost, a make believe friend at least. I sure know I'm not gonna let that happen again. DESIGN Starcraft is pretty basic amount RTS's is earlier counterpart of Warcraft II was one of my favorite games of all time and Starcraft is very similar in design and control. One of my favorite features that most RTS have is the right click interface, and with a simple right click your units will know to collect minerals, mine gas, move, or attack. The graphics are pretty good for its time and an RTS, anyhow I didn't really like the little bit I played of Warcraft III because of the graphics, they looked too busy. I like keeping it simple when it comes to my RTSs. But I did very much like the varied worlds that I was able to play on. I went from a plush world to a hazardous space ship, to space platforms themselves. The story design that I've seen so far has been great but every game that I have played from Blizzard has had great story and lore behind it. The story was very much helped along by the cinematics that were tastefully dispersed throughout my game play, and the mission briefings before each level where very helpful at getting you to understand your reason for fighting, cause who likes fighting for not reason, no one thats who. Tue, 15 Jan 2008 01:32:50 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1844&iddiary=3703Starcraft (PC) - Mon, 14 Jan 2008 20:52:51https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1844SUMMARY An RTS where you can be one of 3 races each with their strengths and weaknesses. Has both campaign, where you fight you're way through various levels to save your respective race, and multi-player options. GAMEPLAY As of now I have played through about half of the Terran campaign and am enjoying it thoroughly. It has been several years since I have played through this game so it's just like new. When I first started playing I wanted to start with the Protoss' campaign but I soon learned you can't start with whichever race you would like it was a bit annoying, but I soon got over it and started my Terran campaign. The Terran campaign has turned out to be quite enthralling. Before each level you are given a briefing and occasionally a cinematic. The briefing gives you your objectives for the level. When you're getting your briefing the CI is talking to you as if you were right there in the space shit you are getting briefed in. It was pretty cool because you got to feel like you were really there and the mission you were about to set forth on was yours in real life.Mon, 14 Jan 2008 20:52:51 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1844&iddiary=3632
