Bokens's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=689Bioshock (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 01:01:12https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3099Gameplay #2: The main enemies you fight throughout the game are mutated human called splicers, there are also robot drones and every once in a while you will come across a "big daddy" and "little sister". you can get a resource that lets you get new abilities called plasmids from the little sisters, but in order to do so you must kill the big daddy. there are mechanical things throughout the game which can be "hacked", which requires you to connect pipes, so that water can flow from one point to another within a certain amount of time. The game has some horror elements in it, however when you die, you simply respawn nearby and no progress is lost, and once there is no consequence to dying, the game is no longer scary. Design: At its core, this game is just another fps game, but it does have several things added that help it to be something more that that. There are rpg and horror elements. There is a fairly interesting storyline. It features the hacking minigame. In addition to normal fps weapons, there are plasmids, which give you ineresting new abilities. The game is in desperate need of some penalty for dying, so that the game has at least a little challenge. The gameworld and tone are such that the player is drawn into exploring it and finding out more about the characters within it.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 01:01:12 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3099&iddiary=5801Bioshock (PC) - Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:32:06https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3099Summary: The game takes place in 1960. You must fight the mutated people called splicers and other mechanical beings that attack you. Gameplay #1: The game's controls are similar to most first person shoots for the PC and its gameplay is similar to System Shock 2. You use normal weapons as well as plasmids, which you inject into your arm to give to special powers such as telekinesis or the ability to electrocute your foes.Thu, 06 Mar 2008 00:32:06 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3099&iddiary=5781mario 64 (N64) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:11:04https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2868Gameplay: Super Mario 64 is a 3D platform game in which the player much control Mario through each level and collect each star. There are no time limits and the player can explore each of the level in many different ways. There are a few cap power ups that Mario can collect as well as a large varienty of jumping and attacking actions that Mario can perform. Design: One of the many design elements that make this game great are the controls. As with many of the games in the Mario series, they give the player controls that are smooth and feel natural. This game also features the ability to rotate and zoom the camera at will, which is a great improvement over the 3D games that had been made before this. The analog control stick allows the player to have perfect control over Mario's speed and offers a very natural feeling. The goal of the game, to collect the stars, is well defined and the levels each offer unique and exciting experiences over all the others. Many of the goals of the game are shown to the player early so that they can create a plan in their mind for how to achive them.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 02:11:04 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2868&iddiary=5385mario 64 (N64) - Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:57:39https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2868Super Mario 64 is the first 3D game of the Mario series, and it formed the style that 3D games would be made in the future in much the same way that the original mario formed the style for 2D games. The gameplay of Super Mario 64 revolves around manuvering mario around through the levels and jumping across platforms. it gives the player control of the camera independant of the characters position. The world is immense and allow the player to do a lot of exploration, since there are often many ways to get to any given point in a level. It also keeps much of the gameplay elements of the previous Mario games.Thu, 21 Feb 2008 01:57:39 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2868&iddiary=5372Ikaruga (GC) - Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:45:59https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2463GAMEPLAY: In Ikaruga, you're ship has a shield which can be either black or white and you are able to chang the color in an instant. when you are hit by an enemy bullet, if it is the same color as your shield, it will be absorbed. This is a key mechanic of the game, and something that really sets it apart from other shmup games. This mechanic also changes the challenges of the game a lot, by making the skills needed more about pattern recognition rather than trying to fit the ship through a small opening in the waves of bullets without touching any of them. DESIGN: The main inovative game mechanic that the game is centered around is ability to constatly change your ships shield to absorb certain types of bullets. When your ship fires, the color of the bullets will be the same as the current color of your shield. Also, the enemy ships in the game are either black or white, and will take double damage from bullets of the oposite color. The player is also able to unleash a powerful attack when their energy bar is full, but to fill the bar they must aborb enemy bullets, which make absorbing generally a better strategy than dodging. The idea of the shield allows the game designer to create lots of interesting and unique challenges for the player, which require the player to analyze the color patterns of waves of enemy bullets and rapidly alternate the color of the ship's shield to manuver through without being hit.Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:45:59 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2463&iddiary=4668Ikaruga (GC) - Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:27:45https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2463Ikaruga is a vertically scrolling shooter video game in which the player must destroy the waves of enemy ships while manuvering your own ship through the waves of enemy bullets. Ikaruga doesn"t have much of a story or characters, but in my opinion it isn't really important for this type of game. The game can be played in one or two player mode. You're ship has a shield which can absorb enemy bullets of the same color, which was nice addition that adds a new twist to this type of game.Fri, 08 Feb 2008 21:27:45 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2463&iddiary=4664Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Thu, 24 Jan 2008 23:28:07https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2037The first Super Mario Brothers had a style of gameplay that is exciting and fun, and Super Mario Brothers 3 took that style and remade it into a world packed with new creative ideas. There are several new mini games add into Super Mario Brothers 3, such as the memory game, the card lineup game and the two player version of the mario brothers arcade game. Although these are good, it is the levels themselves that make this game so good. The stages are very diverse, some may require a great deal of skill to traverse the platforms while the screen is scrolling quickly, and others are constructed like a maze which you must navigate quickly before the time runs out. The items have been expanded a great deal from the previous mario games, while they still have the mushroom, fireflower and star, they also added items such as the leaf, frog suit, tanooki suit, hammer brother suit and the boot. Mario's controls significantly improved over the originals everything seems more responsive and he has greater influence over his movement while in the air. Mario can perform a variety of tasks, such as jumping, swimming, running, stomping on enemies, shooting fireballs, climbing, and even flying. Once he has a raccoon tail, you can make Mario run left and right to build up power, as indicated by a flashing P-Meter, then jump to take off into the sky and fly for about 10 seconds. Although flying had been used in videogames before , Mario 3 is one of the first games that I know of to utilize it in a truly innovative way. There are some stages that require you to master flight to complete them. Others reward you with secrets and hidden areas. Overall this is one of the milestones in the Mario series, and it is one that everyone with an NES should play.Thu, 24 Jan 2008 23:28:07 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2037&iddiary=3963Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) - Thu, 24 Jan 2008 23:25:50https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2037Super Mario Brothers 3 is a 2D platform game. It has a more similar style to the first Super Mario Brothers than the second. Also It can be played with 2 players. Super Mario Brothers 3 has the introduction of a map screen, which at some points allows the player to make a choice of which path to take. It has the same exciting, fun and fast paced platform jumping action of the previous Mario game, but in an even more interesting world. Ive had the most fun with this game out of all the others in the series.Thu, 24 Jan 2008 23:25:50 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=2037&iddiary=3961Metal Gear Solid (PS) - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 01:09:18https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=1895Gamelog Entry #1 In Metal Gear Solid the player controls the protagonist "Solid Snake", who is a retired soldier that is sent to stop the terrorist group FOXHOUND who have taken over a nuclear weapons disposal facility. The game gives you a radar screen which shows the locations of near by guards, as well as there field of view. This is helpful throughout most areas of the game since it is almost always better to sneak past the guards rather than confront them directly. There are many intense moments when you are seen by a guard, and must escape and hide. Then you must remain hidden for a certain amount of time while the guards look for you. The game combines sections of more intense strategy during the parts where you are sneaking past guards, as well as skill during the boss fights. Gamelog Entry #2 Gameplay: This game is excellent. The stealth sections are fun and exciting, while offering a good amount of strategy. It is a landmark game,in that it basicly created the stealth game genre. The characters throughout the game are all great, and the boss fights can vary greatly with the difficulty set at the start of the game. The The story line is very engaging, with many twists and turns. I have only good feelings about this game. Design: The idea of a stealth game was probably around much earlier, but this game brought it to a whole new level. You can knock on the walls to distract guards, the guards can see the bodys of their fallen comrades and call in more guards to start looking for you, the guards can see your footprints in the snow as well as hear you walking across noise floors and you can even hide inside of a box. The radar is a helpful tool and the inventory menu is simple and straight forward. The inventory menu lets you look through your items while holding the button down and selects the item when you release it, and it lets you see your character and surrounding while you do this, which make getting a new item out fast and for the player this makes it less dissengaging from the game world. The levels of the game vary quite a bit and have key story elements scattered evenly throughout. The stealth sections and boss fight/events and evenly spread out also. The controls for the game are smooth and easy to grasp from the first room. Overall this was one of the best games I have ever played, and I would recommend it to everyone.
