rferg's GameLogBlogging the experience of gameplayhttps://www.gamelog.cl/gamers/GamerPage.php?idgamer=990Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC) - Tue, 10 Mar 2009 16:18:44https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3710I played this game for the final time with really no intentions of ever playing it again. Although it wasn't a violent game especially compared to todays standards, it was just too much. As stated earlier, this isn't that good of a game anyway. All you do is kill students, plant explosives, take your own lives, and then fight off demons in hell. To go along with that, you have to put up with the students disturbing conversations they had while planning the events and going through with it. I did put aside my own views of this game to focus on the ethical aspects regarding the game. As Americans we do have freedom of speech and after all the creator of the game wasn't the one who killed 13 people and wounded many more. So in other words the creator of this game had every right to make this game even if people such as myself find it to be rather disrespectful. So in the end violence isn't the issue here because if this was any other game it would look like mega man or mario. It all has to do with the story line. I remember hearing a few years ago about a shooting game called the Kennedy Assassination where the player looks through the scope from the schoolbook depository and gets to reenact the whole thing. When I heard about that game I felt just as appalled as when I first played this game. I understand how one has their own right to free speech, but I just cannot understand why someone would feel it necessary to create games like these ones. So to conclude this game log, I support the creators right to free speech even though I do not like this game at all and overall view it as being disrespectful, but like I said after playing GTA, its just a game.Tue, 10 Mar 2009 16:18:44 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3710&iddiary=6983Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC) - Tue, 10 Mar 2009 15:34:49https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3710For my second crack at this game I tried to focus more on the ethical aspects for both sides of the spectrum. Personally, I find this game to be appalling because of the events it is based on. But me aside, there are several different ways to look at this game from an ethical standpoint. The violence clearly isn't the problem here because if it was any other story line, this game wouldn't be viewed as a violent game because the violence isn't that graphic especially with regards to some of the more violent games out there today on xbox or play station 3. In the end all of the controversy surrounds the story line of this game because it provides a deep look into how these two killers carried out their heinous crimes. The controversy surrounding this game basically falls into a moral dilemma between right to free speech versus right to censor. The right to free speech is a part of our bill of rights and basically allows Americans to speak how they want to speak and act how they want to act, and in this case create games however they wish to. Right to censor basically has to do with ones own freedom not to be offended. This game definitely would offend a good majority of people in this country especially anyone with ties to Columbine High School whose history and public image has been scarred forever. I really don't know any background to this game and what the creators intentions were, but to be fair this game doesn't really mean that he condones this sort of behavior. After all instead of a game it ends up being more of a retelling of the events. The game only goes in one direction and really isn't that hard and I personally do not play that many games. But later on in the game after the two killers shoot themselves they wind up in hell shooting at demons. So it can also be argued that the creator intended to show the player what really happened and because of their heinous actions they ended up in hell. As stated earlier, I personally find this game to be appalling just because it brings back memories of one of the most horrifying events in history. But I still can see why both sides of the spectrum could have their arguments in favor and against this game. The game itself really isn't anything impressive with regards to an rpg like game. However, the biggest concern with this game basically has to do with what this game is about. The game is based off the Columbine Massacre that took place at Columbine High School in 1999, when two students walked in to school and shot and killed 13 people. The minute I started playing this game I immediately found it disturbing that someone actually went ahead and created a game like this based off something as sinister as the school shootings. Honestly I was actually pretty surprised from the game because when I saw that we had to play a game about the Columbine shootings, I thought it would end up being a really violent shoot em up game. The games graphics are something out of super mario and there really isnt any explicit violence at all. The most disturbing aspect to this game by far is the dialogue that occurs throughout the game with two students talking to each other about their future actions on the day of the shootings. The game starts off with one of the students waking up and going over to his computer to tell the other student that it is time and that they are doing the right thing. The conversations between the two killers is by far the most disturbing aspect of this game because it keeps reminding the player that this game is about one of the most deadliest school shootings in US history.Tue, 10 Mar 2009 14:59:43 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3710&iddiary=6967Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2) - Sun, 15 Feb 2009 23:57:51https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597For my 3rd run with San Andreas, I basically just stayed a way from the levels and just went cruising around commiting felonies. I decided that I couldnt keep playing the levels because I just am not too good at video games, so I just stuck with just going on crime sprees. After playing this game several times, I started to think about where I ended up standing when it came to this game. Although, I personally do not find anything wrong with this game, I understand why others may feel different. It is absolutley true that there is alot of immoral activity going on in this game which includes things like drugs, extereme violence, and issues of racism. So in the end it really comes down to topic of rights discussed in class concernng rights of the creator vs rights of the consumer. It is a free country, so anyone can make a game however theyw ant for the most part. On the other hand, consumers may tend to feel that they ultimatley have the right not to be offended. Its almost as if its a moral dillema between freedom and order in our society. The creator of the game has the freedom to do whatever he wants. But one may feel that that sort of explict material has no place in our society when it comes to eneterainment such as video games. Personally, I tend to think that the game is fun, even though it is pretty violent and that it strictly is entertainment. At the end of the day it is just a video game, So I personally see nothing wrong with it because it is fun, but I can also understand why someone would be offended from this video game. Overall, I ended up enjoying this video game to say the least.Sun, 15 Feb 2009 23:57:51 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597&iddiary=6809Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2) - Sun, 15 Feb 2009 21:59:22https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597For my second 30 min game play, I basically just did the same thing as I did the first time. I went on some more crime sprees and went on to eventually start playing the actual levels of the game. While playing the game again, I started taking down notes on some of the key themes I noticed while playing this game. One of the biggest themes in this game has to do with racism, poverty, and gang activities. For the most part, the majority of characters in this game are African American and Latino, while the cops are mainly Caucasian. The cops in this game also are portrayed as being both bigoted and corrupted. Instead of organized crime like in vice city, this game basically revolves around gangland activity and warfare with several different gangs similar to crips, bloods, and latin kings. A lot of the criminal activity includes drugs, weapons, and prostitution. If anything, this games atmosphere seems to be all about stereotypes. This includes the stereotypical gang bangers of south central being African American and Latino. The racist white cop is also another example of stereotyping in this game. Although, I think this game is very entertaining to say the least, I can also understand why this game would be considered as offensive and immoral. This is definitely a game that would be considered as expectable only for mature audiences. This isn’t the right game to buy for a 9 year old basically because it is just too violent. When I was young my parents always thought mortal kombat was way too violent, but after playing this game, MK looks like pac man compared to the amount of violence in this game. Along with violence, other things that can be perceived as being immoral are the use of drugs as well as prostitution in this game. The negative stereotyping can also be considered to offensive to some as well mainly because of the strong themes of racism and injustice. Even though this game can be viewed as being offensive and too violent, I still nonetheless had a fun time playing it because after all it is just a video game.Sun, 15 Feb 2009 21:59:22 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597&iddiary=6789Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas (PS2) - Sun, 15 Feb 2009 21:22:56https://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597This was the first time I ever played this game on ps2. I really don’t play that many video games, but I can say that this was pretty entertaining. The game basically revolves around a gang member who is African American and the storyline takes place sometime in the early 1990’s. The setting is basically a mix of Los Angeles and has a casino setting like Vegas but with fictional names. There is also a little bit of San Francisco in it with a bridge very similar to the golden gate bridge. The whole atmosphere is really similar to the LA riots that occurred in the early 90’s and includes a lot of hip hop culture especially with the music playing on the radio. Prior to this game, I had played the vice city game once before, and it was basically the same concept except that the story takes place in vice city similar to Miami in the 1980’s and has very Scarface like them to it. For my first 30 minute play, I basically just went around on a crime spree with the main character just carjacking people and shooting them. When you commit crimes in this game you basically dig your self in a hole with felonies and the more crimes you commit, the more cops you have on your tail. I lasted for quite a while and then I was eventually pulled from the stole taxi by the police and had a helicopter chasing me as well. Overall, I thought it was a pretty entertaining game during my first 30 minutes of game play.Sun, 15 Feb 2009 21:22:56 CDThttps://www.gamelog.cl/logs/LogPage.php?Log_Id=3597&iddiary=6786
