    jp's The Rub Rabbits! (DS)

    [April 10, 2007 01:31:21 PM]
I guess I kind of blew through the rest of the game without writing anything else. I guess that isn't surprising given how similar this game is to its prequel. (Feel the Magic)

    Final thoughts?

This game is essentially a bunch of mini-games that are tied together. The interactions are very simple and over very fast. In this way, the game is similar to the Warioware series. However, there are some critical differences. First of all, the narrative and context is much more important in this game than in Wario. What you do in each mini-game is actually "relevant" (or related) to the story. While the wackiness is charming in Warioware, it works even better in this game. You wouldn't believe the things the main character does in the name of love!

Now that I wrote that I wonder, is this perhaps the most romantic game I've ever played? Probably! What a hoot!

The second important difference is in the way the mini-games are segmented. In Warioware you play a random assortment of 10 or so mini-games. In this game you play one, but in increasing levels of difficulty. (generally).

Also, and this is perhaps one of the more intriguing ideas in this game, there are certain mini-games that aren't. Some of the games are just things you do in order to move on without any real challenge and without the possibility of losing either.

    Break time!

    Ah.
The interludes. Between successive rounds of the same mini-game, you get a chance to rest. They're not cut-scenes (they don't have any relation to the games narrative), however if you watch them all together...they are narratively related to each other.

I've grown to like them. :-)

This game also makes interesting use of the physical affordances of the platform on which it runs. Quite a few games ask you to turn the DS on its side, upside down, etc. I can see people scratching their heads about this in the future when they play this game on an emulator. He!

I think that Feel the Magic:XX/XY was probably the first game I played on the Nintendo DS. (started playing it on May 15, 2005! Wow...). Anyways, Rub Rabbits is a sort of sequel and I've been really curious to see what they've done to the game.

The short of it, it's pretty much the same...and that isn't a bad thing, in my opinion. There's a zillion new wacky mini-games and there is a LOT more story exposition than I remember the original having. But it's fun, and light, and zany...and I guess I enjoy it for those reasons. It feels like a fresh game even if the gameplay isn't that fresh.

Sort of like the Zelda games..I guess. I hadn't really thought about that until I wrote the previous paragraph. Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Castlevania...there's a lot of "classic" franchises which have really worked on keeping the core essential gameplay intact, but focusing on the details and polishing, and polishing, and polishing until everything is perfect. Hmm... some people would call it a re-hash...but I guess that's being a little bit too negative.

Back to Rub Rabbits... so far I'm enjoying how:

    (1) The DS, as a physical artifact, is incorporated a lot more in the games. You're often asked to turn it around, upside down, sideways (like a book). It's nice to see a game that notices that the top of a screen doesn't always have to be the same.

    (2) Little extras. There's like a zillion little games and activities that you can pass time with. In the previous game you could earn clothing to "dress" the girl...now you can actually draw your own designs! There's also a game collaborative multiplayer game that involves you trying to get your DS passed around as much as possible! Neat idea..haven't tried it out yet.

    (3) The minigames are just plain crazy. I've had to shake guys out a palm trees, lure piranhas with my hand, throw a girl in the air to catch fruit, roll around on the floor, slap people awake... the list is endless.

    Fun, fun, fun!
