    jp's Flipnic (PS2)

Nice game for a nice diversion...but the latter levels aren't worth the effort of clearing the last few missions I had left to go. This game DEFINITELY has some excellent ideas for digital pinball games...and I also loved the retro-glam presentation. I shall cherish this one!

I picked this up again the other night because I was looking for a moment to relax. I've always liked the audio and the game is, in general, quite good. I'm stuck on the 2nd table where I've been unable to finish two "goals" that will unlock the 3rd. However, there is a way to play the other table (3rd and 4th) so I gave them a try to see what I'd been missing. Two words: not much.

I'd read some reviews as to how this game gets progessively "worse" in terms of the quality/fun-factor of the tables. It turns out that the reviews are right. That doesn't mean to say they are bad...it's just that they seem to get simpler the more you advance. Less details, less things to do, less variety, etc.

The final "table" is ALMOST a joke. It is basically a neat re-interpretation of Arkanoid (or whatever Arkanoid clone you like...or whatever game inspired Arkanoid). But it's not really a pinball game...

Oh well, I might be playing this a LITTLE bit more..but I don't think so. It will probably come out now and then to show to friends....

The 2nd stage is not really a real stage. It's more like a mini-game-walk-in-the-park. I cleared it the first time I played without even trying!

The real second stage, called Metallurgy is a whole other kettle of fish. It's pretty cool though a bit less so than the previous one (Biology?). In this stage there is, amongst other things, a weird crab-like beast that you have to chase from one table to the next while trying to hit it with the ball. Cool stuff. The multiball also works differently. All the extra balls are smaller than the original one and the warp back in when you lose them. Basically, multiball goes on forever UNLESS you lose the big ball. It sounds really easy...but it's not.

This game is a great example of right things to do in a pinball game. The first is including a great help system that not only tells you how to play, but also has a list of all the objectives (missions, in this game) there are on a table, what you have to do to unlock/beat them and what will happen when you do.

The second thing this game nails is taking an interesting look at a pinball game when you are no longer constrained by the real world. I don't mean wacky physics or stuff luck that. This game plays with the whole notion of "table". Each level is basically like a bunch of connected tables. Some are larger than others and each of them has interesting things to do and look at. It even has minigames!!

So far I've only just recently unlocked the 2nd stage, so I've still got a ways to go, but I'm definitely excited!
