jp's Yoshi Touch & Go (DS)

    [October 24, 2005 06:25:26 PM]
Wow. This has to be the shortest GameLog for a game I genuinely think is good. It is just so short that I can't justify playing any more in light of all the other games I have on my waiting list.

So, don't get it unless you have the money burning a hole in your pocket. And, from what I've heard, get the Kriby game instead.

Now I've had the chance to give this game some real dedication. It's a bit of a letdown.

The gameplay is really nicely done. Using the touchscreen feels very natural, there are lots of different things you can do such as tap Yoshi to make him jump, tap the screen to make him fire an egg, encircle things, drag things that have been encircled, etc. All these combine into a really fun little package. Some parts of the game are incredibly hectic, while others a a little more relaxed. However, it doesn't really add up to much. Yes, the game is good, but there isn't enough of it. I feel like in a mere 2 hours I've already experience everything this game has to show...

To give you an idea, the game starts off with two modes and two others are locked. I've already unlocked them all...and they are practically the same. Would you rather play against the clock or see how far you can go... That's it. The scenarios are essentially the same. The enemies, the same. Etc. Etc. Etc.
The game feels like a demo that was packaged up as a game.

I miss the fact that there aren't any levels. It feels strange to thing that Yoshi isn't taking baby Mario anywhere, so what's the point? It kind of betrays the (scant) narrative that Yoshi games have...

I haven't really played this full-time yet, but I have tried it out for some 15 minutes or so. It seems fun, but I really want to put some more time into it to see how much depth there is (or not). Basically, I think the using the touch screen is brilliant, I wonder how much else the game can provide.

The other day, however, I played the multiplayer (vs.) mode which was a LOT more fun than expected. Granted, it took us more than a few games to figure out all the things that were going on, but still. It's definitely cool and to make things better: you only need one copy of the game! Yes!

Really nifty ideas and execution. Not nearly enough depth (in terms of "how long can I play this without getting bored").
