jp's Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee (GC)

    [January 10, 2006 12:39:54 PM]
    Bleagh.

I tried playing this again last night. This time I was alone and determined to learn the controls properly and make some real progress. In other words, I wanted to unlock stuff! And I did since I was able to unlock a new location. However, was it worth it? Nope.

A little disclaimer here... I'm not really good at fighting games in general. I'm terrible at learning and executing combos and my reaction times for blocking and such are atrocious. So, my distaste for this particular game is biased by my general indifference to fighting games in general. As far as these games go I'm what you would call a button-masher. (I did have a lot of fun with Tekken 3! Hehehe).

Anyways, I did make an honest effort to learn moves and combos and try to carry them out. I concentrated on using one monster only (Godzilla) and practiced, practiced and practiced some more...so, why did I almost throw down this game in disgust? (well, not really... I just decided to spend my time on something else...)
The controls feel clunky and not very responsive. The visuals aren't that nice and make it really hard to tell what is going on in many of the scenarios. (especially when you fight at night). Also, the camera is kind of strange because at times it is really hard to find out what the heck is going on (and then I got pounded). I guess if I had to sum it up in one phrase, this game doesn't feel agile enough for a fighting game. Now, given that it is a fighting game for huge monsters, this might make sense...but, it doesn't feel massive either. The monsters aren't quick to control, but neither do they feel powerful and strong.

    So, bye bye Godzilla!

The box says "...one of GameCube's very best - IGN".
I really hope that quote was taken out of context.

    ...one of GameCube's very best:

    1) weird fighting games with bland textures!
    2) huge monster fighting games! (are there any others?)
    3) games whose name begins with "G"!

I don't know. I'm being unfair. I bought it 'cause it was 1/2 off (from $14!!).
Is it any good? I don't really know yet. There are only 3 monsters available and the fighting seems slow and broken. I'm not good at fighting games though, so it really might just be my lack of 733t-combo skillz. Really.
