jp's Lego Batman: The Videogame (Wii)

    [September 14, 2009 01:41:30 PM]
I think we finally finished the last mission on the villain side. Not very fulfilling to be honest, but hey. I guess out 64% completion is testament to how tired we were by many of the issues we found with the game.

One of the fun things about the LEGO Star Wars series was playing in "free play" mode. In this mode you essentially re-play levels you've already completed. However, instead of being forced to use the "correct" characters for that level you have a set of 8 (ten?) characters from which to choose from and alternate. The levels are essentially designed with the two modes (free play and story mode) in mind because there are areas you can't access without using special abilities or characteristics of certain characters (ex: some characters can jump higher, other can detonate certain structures, etc.).

Anyways... I realized when playing the Batman game that it is really hard to complete a regular (story mode) level WITHOUT wasting a ton of time fruitlessly trying to reach areas/items that you can't get to because the characters you are controlling at the moment (Batman/Robin) don't have the right abilities. Since we're pretty much starting, we don't know what special abilities we'll have to use and still don't know the "visual grammar" used in the game to indicate what things you can/can't do yet. It's a bit frustrating, to be honest. PARTICULARLY, because we've spent so much time playing both LEGO Star Wars games.

The reviews definitely didn't lie on this one. This is essentially the same game as the LEGO Star Wars games...but worse in some ways. I'm playing this co-op with my son who picked up on the similarities quite quickly (and, to be honest, bluntly as well). He doesn't mind since the Batman license is what makes it all the more exciting and the new abilities that Batman and Robin have are interesting.

That said, we've only played 4 levels and, in general, they are much harder and more frustrating than the Star Wars ones. It's not that the game is harder per se, rather that there is more stuff going on on the screen making it harder to see where you are (and what you're doing), there are quite a few environmental hazards that are hard to pick out. Particularly the heat ray/super hot areas. Also, the levels are darker...making it harder to see where you are, where you can go, and what you might want to do (or interact with). Grrrr...

jp's opinion and rating for this game

A bit of a disappointment to be honest. The interface and game play seem clunkier and more problematic than the LEGO Star Wars games and the overall experience was less fulfilling. I'm not sure that I would feel the same had I played this one first, but there you go.
