jp's Disgaea: Hour of Darkness (PS2)

    [November 28, 2003 05:50:00 PM]
Finished chapter 8 and have 27 hourse on the savegame. I actually played 3 scenarios. They weren't too difficult at all, though an interesting exercise. I'm not sure how much longer I have to go on this game and I am definitely not interested in finishing up every little thing, though I have enjoyed this game overall.

I've just finished Episode 7. Things are getting a bit slow. The last episode was really easy. Hardly a challenge at all. How much more is there to go? I don't know...but I might be starting to get bored of this game.

BTW, I've clocked 24 hours on my saved game! Wow...time flies.

I've just clocked over 20 hrs. according to the save game. That's quite a lot. I also just finished chapter 6. Laharl is now the overlord. Whoohoo!

One of the last battles I did was pretty funny..at least the buildup. These 3 dudes (one red, one blue and one yellow) show up and say they are something like the Prism Rangers. Hahahaha! What a ripoff! (on purpose, of course) They don't even have enough colors for a rainbow..according to them, because they don't have enough friends.

I love it when a game makes fun of itself and of other stuff like that.

Here's a thought. Both this game, as well as another RPG I'm currently playing (Lufia) have unwinnable encounters. I'm definitely not used to running into a fight which is impossible to win, but I may get used to it. Of course, the unwinnable fights are used to further the story, and they don't feel terribly dissapointing in that sense. However I can't help feel that they are jsut wrong. These fights are so obviously impossible to win that I wonder why the game designer even bothered to add them. Why make me play through a futile exercise?

Is it because if it where possible to win I would save/restart until victory was assured (and then ruined the plot...) Are they made really hard in order for them to be obviously unwinnable, and therefore I won't feel bad about my failure? The good thing is that at least these encounters are pretty short. I mean, the bad guys literally wipe me out in two turns.

Aha! Picked it up again yesterday for a few more levels. The storyline seems to be unfolding a bit more, which is nice. As far as the characters go, I have another rant. Some pretty cool characters (like the Hoggmeister) have joined my party. The latest one is called Mederas. The problem is that some of them make my other characters seem crappy. Why bother to train them, level them up, get good equipment if a newer/cooler character will join later on?

Oh well. Its still a pretty fun game and I'm looking forward to investing some time on dungeoning into an item soon. Yay!

Still playing, but at a lower pace. The initial excitement has worn off to a certain degree. My "big" characters are at around level 10-12 and most of the fights I've been in are rather easy. Oh! The Hoggmeister joined my crew recently...he's a pretty cool character.

I normally don't go for tactical RPGS. Too much story and game-systems that are too intricate/complicate/unknown tend to turn me off. (I did like Ogre Tactics:Knight of Lodis(GBA). Disgaea has been a very pleasant surprise though. I find that despite not having the manual I have been able to pick up everything realtively easily, the system is fun and there is a lot of variety. I really hope this game turns into a sleeper hit since I think it really deserves it.
