jp's Need for Speed Underground 2 (DS)

    [March 17, 2009 05:08:53 PM]
    Ugh. This is terrible.

I've tried, I've really made an effort and tried to understand how this game works and how I should play it. I've failed miserably and I'm also quite surprised to see that it has (relatively) decent reviews and scores. I've found it a most frustrating experience! Here's a list of issues that, when taken together, help explain what I mean:

    (1) Cars are rated according to 3 characteristics (acceleration, handling and max. speed). I haven't really noticed much difference between them.

    (2) You can purchase upgrades and add-ons for your cars. I did. As many as possible. But I don't know what the point is. The ratings the cars get didn't change at all after multiple add-ons. So, do the add-ons have any kind of gameplay effect? I'm not sure.

    (3) The collision system is "unfair". Ok, unfair seems very subjective but this happened to me multiple times while racing:
    (i) A crash head-on with another vehicle and my car is bounced BACK a considerable distance while the vehicle I crashed with stops dead in its tracks
(ii)Opponents cars don't suffer the same consequences. In fact, I've been crashed into (from behind) by an opponent and watched my car bounce up into the air while my opponent zips on...

    (4) The "you're facing the wrong way" icon will appear even when you're not, in fact, facing the wrong way. The most egregious example of this was when, in a crash, I was bounced backwards without any change in facing.

    (5) I've won games without knowing why.

    (6) I've lost games without knowing why.

    (7) I generally don't like games you spend most of your time after a crash re-orienting the care in the direction you're supposed to go.

    (8) I won a lot of the drag racing events, I still don't really understand how or why.

    (9) The races seem really long. I could swear that each race is 15 minutes long. They can't be, surely. But that's how long they feel. Either too many laps or tracks are too long.

Just to be clear, I've finished/won more than 30 events. I've tried all the modes available and purchased 3 cars. I've probably played about 8 hours. I tried. I really did.

So far, not so good. Maybe I'm not used to the controls yet? Not really. I tried, and I don't get it. YMMV
