    jp's Killzone 3 (PS3)

    [February 20, 2012 04:13:41 PM]
Having played more of the campaign, I still can't get over how ich this game reminds me of Call of Duty:Modern Warfare. Yes, the setting is different, but the handholding and signposting is largely the same. This was particularly noticeable to me when I played the "stealth" missions. I don't recall if "soap mctavish" was the character I played or the one who told me what to do, but i experienced deja vu when I heard the KZ3 guy tell me to take out the one on the left, or wait until the guards passed, and so on.

I guess I' m feeling a little disappointed because the experience feels cheapened and somewhat hollow. It's still fun, but it isn't otable or remarkable and that saddens me. It doesn't help that whenever I see the ISA guys ( the good guys) I remember the gears of war characters. I would swear that they're the same...

I must have played KZ1 for a few hours at most and I remember enjoying the retro-futuristic WWI aesthetic I felt it had. The baddies were distinctive and I feel that the series seems ro have lost a bit of that. Maybe a lot. It probaby doesn't help that I haven't played the oer games in the series in any depth and that my knowledge of tha background world/story/characters and so on is nil. This means I have a hard time understanding what the heck is going on and, more importantly, why I should care. Because I don't really. It's fun, and bombastic, and exciting, but not really engaging...

The only reason I had for playing this game is that a bunch of my friends are all into it: playing online. Curiously, they're all playing on US servers (no servers in South America), but apparently they're able to go at it quite well.

So, I guess I blundered into the game quite willingly and, to my surprise, it wasn't an all that bad experience. I basically joined a team deathmatch game with my friends having NO idea about the game, how to play, what was going on, etc. By no idea I literally mean NO idea. I had to figure out the controls in my first couple of minutes all while getting shot at, in levels I had no idea how to navigate, AND with an interesting mix of classes, weapons and abilities.

I guess my experience was softened by the fact that it was a team deathmatch game. So, only half the players were out to get me. However, contrary to my experience in TF2, the levels are all pretty small/tight and there aren't really any "safe areas" (like the team respawn). So, it really was like landing in the middle of a gunfight naked. And with a nice target on your back.

Yes, I did terribly, but over time I did get better. In fact, I was able to level up quite a few times which lead me to realize that there were classes, with different skills (all locked up), weapon loadouts, and abilities (also locked up). I haven't yet figured out what each of the classes are good at, but I've experimented with the medic and engineer (analogous to TF2)! I wasn't aware that there was such a thing as a medic until someone (kindly) revived me quicker than I was able to tap out to respawn. Funny how those things go.

So, what am I doing in the meantime? Well, I've started playing the campaign...not that I think it will be of much use on the multiplayer, but still. At least I'll have SOME context as to where the multiplayer maps are supposedly taking place.

Fun stuff, now I need to get voice chat working...THAT should make things a lot more interesting...
