    jp's X-men: Legends (GC)

    [December 27, 2012 02:41:26 PM]
The game's difficulty is surprisingly higher than I expected and my son and I have had difficulty clearing some levels. I'm not sure if this is because we haven't quite "got" the game in terms of understanding the combat system or not. I wouldn't be surprised if it was something like that - and given that my expectations are for a mostly button-mashing experience, it wouldn't be much of a surprise to find out that this game is more sophisticated than that.

I guess I'll never really know though, since we've moved on to other games. Mostly it's the (minor) annoyance of having wired GameCube controllers that require is to sit somewhat uncomfortably on the floor, but the truth is we have enough OTHER games just sitting there waiting to be played that I've decided to simply pack this on up.

A quick lookup on Gamefaqs lets me state with some confidence that we hardly made any progress in the game at all. We were set to start "That's Morlock It" which is the 6th section out of 25. This includes the X-Mansion interludes and an overview...

To be honest, I didn't think I'd be playing a Gamecube game again...or at least not for regular "fun" (as in, not research-related). All of a sudden it dawned on me that I could play this co-op with my son! So far, he's really enjoying it (and starting to figure out who the X-Men are, which is kind of neat. To be fair, I'm also learning about the X-Men. I never read the comics much, though I had seen the movies. So, there's quite a few villains I don't know/recognize even if the the game is borrowing from the (first?) movie's visual style. Surprisingly (for me), the game looks quite good! If I didn't know better, I would have said it looks like a Wii game - but I guess that's an insult to the Wii's graphics...eek.

I had the vague idea that this game was sort of like the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games, but for superheros. I really enjoyed the first Dark Alliance (on the PS2) and figure the button-mashing hack-n-slash would carry through quite well. So far so good... we've almost finished the 2nd mission, but there are a few things that feel strange...

    (1) At times, you're forced into using only one character. So, there might be 4 people having a blast, until there's a one-character scene and everyone else must sit around and watch... This makes sense from the perspective of controlling the narrative and how it unfolds...but still. It was a bit jarring.

    (2) 4-player co-op is probably a blast (and super chaotic). I thought that you could play with 1-4 characters. The truth is that it varies, although at certain points you can bring in more characters if you want/need. This is kind of neat actually!
