    mobmarkymark's Minecraft (PC)

    [September 17, 2012 03:51:54 PM]
Minecraft is a sandbox/ adventure game that gained a lot of popularity while it was still in its alpha and beta testing. One would not think that Minecraft would be a popular game for the mainstream audience when examining its graphics, but the game definitely struck a chord with a large amount of people. Minecraft is a game full of adventure that includes the “sandbox” element with the main goal being survival. When entering a world of Minecraft for the first time, you will find a completely different environment that is unique to anyone else’s. This is because all of the worlds in Minecraft are randomly generated each time you start a new one. One’s immediate goal when placed in this random and hostile environment should be to survive the night. At nighttime, many evil creatures appear and try to kill you which can be very counterproductive. There are number of interesting mechanics in Minecraft. The player is able to move walk, run, jump, and swim freely throughout the world. He or she can also craft a number of tools and weapons among other things. Most everyone’s favorite aspect of the game, though, is the ability to build whatever it is that your mind desires. With a near unlimited amount of space and materials, your limit is truly your imagination. Minecraft’s art is what truly makes it so unique. Everything is composed of blocks. The world itself is all blocks, and a blocky texture is applied to all the creatures, items, and objects in the game. This art direction is both unique and appealing, making Minecraft stand out among other indie games and other games in general. The level of freedom that one has in the game of Minecraft is unparalleled. Yes, the objective of the game is to survive, but why can’t it also be to thrive? Who is to say that one player’s goal may not be completely different from another’s? It is the freedom to choose and the ability to create and innovate that makes Minecraft a winner.

Very simple, yet fun game. This is a perfect example of a game that doesn't need top notch graphics or thousands of features in order to awesome.
