    jp's Borderlands (PS3)

    [January 6, 2014 12:12:25 AM]
Character is now up to level 24 or so.

It's been mostly the same, which means that I'm starting to get a little tired. Yes, vehicles seem to matter more in the new areas, but overall it's still the same thing. The stats for the weapons seem to have levelled off now, so no major jumps or surprises but there are now class mods available. These all give different bonuses and are actually quite confusing. I've picked up 3 but I only use the one that lets my ammo regenerate (so the chore of picking up ammo drops is gone). The other two seem to be "great" for multiplayer but are perhaps useless since I'm playing by myself? I'm not really sure because they give bonuses to skills I didn't know existed and have no idea what to do with. Sometimes I feel like I'm getting trolled, other times I feel like I should be paying more attention...

This really is an FPS and RPG hybrid!

I don't know why I'm so surprised by that, but it's true. I'm sort of enjoying this game (I'm maybe 5 hours in or so...just hit level 12) and sort of not enjoying it at the same time. It's strange.

The world is really interesting. It's pretty in a stylized sort of way (cel-shading does that for you I guess), but it's also really empty. And this is what's been bugging me the most so far. It's a barren world that isn't supposed to be barren - especially since you re-visit locations constantly to complete different missions. It really feels like a theme-park in the sense that if certain things haven't been switched on, they don't exist. There are also other things (like certain enemy "pop-ups" that will happen all the time in the same place. It gets a bit tiring...

So far I've been following the "accept every quest and try to do them all" strategy. I was getting a bit tired of these when suddenly - VEHICLES! I was not expecting that at all...and I'm not sure they add that much (other than help with the travelling back and forth you have to do).

I'm still curious to see where this will all go, and I suspect I should be paying more attention to the story and the characters...
