    jp's Thomas was Alone (VITA)

    [February 9, 2014 08:12:33 PM]
    Done.

I'm still not sure what all the fuss was about. It's a "nice" platformer that isn't afraid to mix things up in order to avoid going stale. The narrator and the characters never really gelled with me. Maybe I was too concentrated on getting to the end of each level instead of listening? But, I did listen to the voiceover! I'm really curious to hear from other people, since so far my experience, while good (I enjoyed playing), wasn't stellar.

I got all the trophies if that means anything...

I guess that games with a narrator or character that offers some form of running commentary are now a "thing" (Bastion, Stanley Parable, Portal 2, etc.). I had heard good things about this game, especially having to do with its story and how successful it was in getting the player to connect emotionally to its cast of characters - all of which are (as far as I know, haven't finished it yet) simple geometric shapes.

I can see what people are getting at - but I'm not really feeling the emotional connection just yet. I've made it all the way to the 6th major section (out of 9?) - so it seems like its running late for me, no? Perhaps there's something really interesting that will happen soonish? Dunno..

For now the game feels like quite the standard platform puzzler with a high degree of polish and music that I personally find irritating and grating (gladly I was able to turn it down). Each character has a different "specialty" (can jump higher, etc.) and you often have to figure out how to get them to work together (by controlling each one in turn) to get to the exit.

It's been quite the easy ride so far, which I guess helps better express my slight disappointment with the story so far...

Fun, but perhaps a victim of too much indie darling hype?
