    jp's Hearthstone (iPd)

    [November 14, 2014 05:04:28 PM]
I stopped playing for a few months before going back in for a few more games. Would you believe that I lost my 2nd game thanks to a connectivity problem? That's it. I'm done. I've deleted the app from my ipad.

I'm really close to quitting Hearthstone. Not because it's a bad game, or I'm bored, but because I'm growing increasingly frustrated with connectivity issues I've been having. I'm starting to lose count of the number of matches I've lost because I got disconnected from the server or other nonsense like that. It's particularly frustrating because the client gives very little indication that something is going on. Yes, there is a "you've been disconnected from the server" message - but it doesn't always appear. More often than not, I've been in a situation where my client UI soft-freezes (during my turn). By soft-freeze I mean that I can select things, but can't cast spells or select attackers. It feels like the game has conked out, but the timer still runs. So, I might lose a turn, then I watch my opponent play, and then it's back to me for a split second, basically skipping my turn again. And so on a few turns. It's REALLY annoying and I'd much rather a disconnect (sorry, you're out) than this spectator helplessness situation where you can only watch as the game passes you by (and then you lose).

I've been playing on an iPad, which may be part of the problem? I know for sure it's not my internet connection.

I've now played enough using four of the characters to feel that I have an decent enough grasp of the cards and mechanics (at least for the 4 characters I've used) such that I can appreciate the game and how it works. It's not a bad game. I'll even say it's a good game, there are some neat ideas although I do miss certain things from Magic (while others are just different). For example:

    (a) Magic allows for opponents to play special cards/activate abilities during their opponents turn (instants). This adds a lot of depth to the game, because you'll have to be careful when playing in anticipating whether or not an opponent could respond to something you've done. (e.g. does the player have enough mana to counter my creature? if yes, I might want to bait him with another spell first...) You can't do this at all in Hearthstone, and I understand why (adds complexity), but it also means that you don't really need to pay much attention when your opponent is playing and, there's no reason to "save" mana just in case (either for real, or bluffing). I miss that.

    (b) In Magic you lose if you either run out of life points or if you need to draw a card but can't. It's a minor thing, and usually rare for you to lose by "milling" (run out of cards), but it's nice to have the possibility. In Hearthstone you lose life points when you can't draw and are supposed to, which is not quite the same....mostly because, AFAIK, there aren't really any cards you can play to force your opponent to discard cards. So, if you're ever in a position where you can't draw cards, it's most likely due to your own fault...which is kind of lame.

On the other hand, there are a few things I think are really great about Hearthstone. Chief among them, the "mana system". One of the things I hate most about Magic is the luck/chance factor in the mana system. You're always getting mana screwed (either the wrong kind, too much, not enough). I really wish there was a "fix" for this that made it a strategic choice (should I draw a land this turn or not?) or made it automatic. This is what Hearthstone does. Every turn you get +1 mana, no questions asked. It allows you to plan ahead and while there are some cards/effects that let you skip ahead of the curve (gain a mana crystal early), they don't seem to be used that often.

I've only played a few games so far. Enough to unlock some characters and level up the Mage (lvl 10). It's an interesting game - but I can't feel that it's Magic: the Gathering-lite. I'm sure there are some more subtle things, but I guess I need to play longer to shake them out. We'll see how it goes...
