    jp's Pokémon Go (iPd)

    [April 3, 2018 12:57:11 PM]
    Still playing!

Niantic recently rolled out an update that added daily quests (with rewards) and a special multi-step research quest that should result in my being able to catch Mew!

I'll admit that it's made the game more interesting (I was starting to lose interest, though I picked up a few pokemon I'd been waiting for ages to get, which was really exciting!) and I've enjoyed doing these small quests even if, in the grand scheme of things, I don't care all that much about the rewards.

I'm a bit surprised that it's taken them this long to roll out what I would consider "standard" features for F2P mobile games.

So now, to catch a Mew!

I'm one of those people who are still playing this game. To be fair, there's a lot of people still playing - but it's obviously not the hot game of the moment like it was...a year and a half ago?

I've been close to quitting a lot - I'm currently almost level 34 and I have most, but not all of the Pokemon, including almost all of the legendary ones that are available. I think I've only kept on playing because whenever I'm about to quit some new update rolls in that gets me re-engaged. This time around it's the 3rd wave of new Pokemon. Niantic is pretty smart about how they've been rolled out this time - it's like they're slowly drip-feeding them so that every few weeks there's some new ones around to catch.

On the other hand, I'm close to quitting because I recently learned that Mewtwo (Mewtoo?) was available but ONLY on a special raid that you have to get randomly invited to participate in. Hmmm...I really don't like that. First, it means that I depend on chance to get an invite, then - I might not even be able to catch it, and finally - this special raid - I'm guessing it's a specially scheduled event. This is not how I play PokemonGo at all! I like to play it on my own terms and time. If there's a raid happening and I can make it, cool. If not, that's also cool. But this seems like a tightly scheduled thing. I'm not really sure if that's how it works, but that's the impression and I have and I don't really care to find out too much. We'll see how it goes. Maybe I'll quit when I get to level 34.

The new update, that added 80 new Pokemon, has really invigorated the Pokemon community it seems. There hadn't been much movement in the gyms and now it seems crazy all over again...

I've enjoyed catching the new ones, and I've been fortunate to fill out a few of the ones I'm still missing from the 1st generation. The new berries are also fun, in a "adds variety" sense. If anything, the gameplay is now more interesting - Pokemon now sometimes move sideways making it harder to catch them.

At GDC I met some people who confided the following (w/r to the game) that I'm not attributing in case it's an issue:

    a. Nintendo did not want there to be a way to get rid of Pokemon you'd caught. (you can now send them to the prof for candy). It was a hard fight for them to agree to the game having a sink.

    b. There might have been similar issues w/r to having Pokemon appearances be a zero-sum game. Currently if you see one, everyone can see it and catch it. This is much better than you catching it and everyone else being angry...

I've been playing since July in what I would call a mostly passive way. For the first couple of weeks I did go out (with my son) to collect and hatch, but he lost interest rather quickly. I walk a fair amount on campus and so it's convenient in that it doesn't alter my schedule, but I can do some catching without having to think about it too much, which is nice. I've also realized that I can play while listening to podcasts (on the bus or while I walk) without losing too much attention to either activity. Perfect.

I've been quite surprised by how commercially successful the game has been because I have not spent a dime on the game yet and I've never felt the need to. In that sense the gating is very low pressure, something that I appreciate quite a bit. I've only just hit level 24, so I guess I'm a slow player which would explain why I don't feel the need to spend money on stuff that I've been able to collect from Pokestops without problem. I am surprised by the fact that you can only buy regular pokeballs (rather than the better ones). Seems like a missed opportunity. And, to be fair, it seems like some of the other things are a bit overpriced? I wouldn't mind spending some money for more incubation pods - but only if they didn't run out. So, a new permanent incubator rather than one with only three uses.

While the game has evolved over the past few months, it's been interesting to see what they have and haven't done. I've only noticed something significant in the last few weeks. Last week, Pokemon were popping up all over the place (usually 3-4 at a time) and pokestops were really generous. This week, the stops have gotten super stingy...and as a result my supplies have been running low enough that I no longer automatically try to catch everything I see like I did before.

Weirdly, the thing that has me closest to quitting the game is a usability/tech glitch. I think. People have complained about it online, so I know it's not just me. Like I said before, while I play I also listen to podcasts. Well, as of the last version, when I do this the volume of my podcast decreases significantly. It's enough that I have trouble hearing some of my podcasts (when volume is maxxed out), and it's bad when I quit out of Pokemon Go that the volume goes back to normal (and my ears get blasted).

Pokedex is at 103 caught. Still a ways to go...sigh.
I've set Magikarp as my buddy 'cause he's the only one I've caught and I really want the 400 candy it takes to evolve him to Gyarados. I really liked the walking with buddy gets you candy.
