Aug 9th, 2010 at 13:08:53     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

I am glad that this is the last time I have to play Super Columbine Mascaras RPG! After playing many times I should admit that Grand Theft Auto was much better than this game. Even if it has several unethical issues; at least it is not based on a real tragedy. For many players, Super Columbine Mascaras RPG could be a regular game with pixilated pictures and missions to accomplish after playing few hours.
Tim Winter, president of the Parents Television Council stated “You don’t gain appreciation for the tragedy by repeating it and participating in a recreation yourself and taking the role of murderers,” (source of quote www.msnbc.msn.com) I agree with him 100% because when you play it many times you will start to forget about the tragedy.

After a while, I could enter the classroom and unfortunately someone had been killed. I did not like that everything is in the game seems to be automatic. You do not have a freedom of choice and you just press button to accomplish what they ask you to do. Then I walked through building and there are real pictures of the school, which puts you in the mode of the game. It is all about killing and shooting innocent students. How could that affect teens in same ages and situation? The creator of the game Ledonne stated in the documentary about the game. “To be honest with you, I was headed down something of a similar path.” “I was looking at these two boys who I saw perhaps too much of myself in” (source of quote: www.msnbc.msn.com)

There are always cons and pro for every aspect in life especially when it comes to our values as a society. Super Columbine Mascaras RPG is a free download on the Internet. I think that was an important reason to have more debates on the game. According to www.msnbc.msn.com, “some called Ledonne’s game a slap in the face to the families of those killed and an exploitive and unnecessary piece of violent entertainment. Others hailed it as sophisticated fusion of game play and documentary filmmaking and a ground-breaking achievement in artistic game design.”

From the beginning of the game till now I was thinking why the creator started the game by this quote from Andre Breton: “The purest surrealist act would be to go into a crowd and fire at random.” What does he mean by that? is it related to Eric and Dylan? Is he trying to frame their actions or what is the hidden message behind it? I tried to understand it but I hope we could discus it in the class.

After a long journey of killing and shooting, the creator finally gives the player a sort of freedom. When you enter the library of the school, you could choose to commit suicide or keep on killing students. After you commit suicide the game become very depressing. I cried at this moment when the real montage for images has appeared. Showing the real dead bodies for Eric and Dylan is painful in the game. I have just felt of the situation and how it was horrible. The reaction of people and everything are miserable. Now I may understand one point of the creator view. He may want to convey a message and show people some facts. They may think that killing and shooting are easy but here are some of the results. Showing the results of the action is important in the game to show people the real dark side of the event. If some one was affected by the game and wanted to kill and shoot, I think he will stop thinking about that after seeing the real montage.

Even if Eric and Dylan are responsible for the murders, and for their own suicide I felt sorry when I saw their dead bodies. They still humans and we care about others. Now another question came to my mind! Did the creator make this game to make people forgive Eric and Dylan. Did he mean to put their pictures to show who were affected that the two boys are already dead? When the family would see the one who killed their son has already been killed maybe it could relief some of their pain. The representation of the real consequences of the gruesome action played an important role in the game. In my opinion, the creator wants to give lessons to teens not to involve in these actions. On the other hand, the realism of the game may upset many people who do not want to see these scenes.

I would encourage all players to read the artist statement from this link. http://www.columbinegame.com/statement.htm

Aug 9th, 2010 at 08:44:31     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

Whenever I play Super Columbine Mascaras RPG! I feel guilty and sorry about every one was affected by the event. I spent more than half an hour trying to reach the cafeteria. Every time I went inside the school they sent me back to the parking. I did know what is the reason and I WAS CONFUSED WHAT IS Happening. After more than fifteen times I noticed that I should pass under the security cameras without facing any girl. I felt it is a boring game when I repeated the same scene several times trying to go to the other room. I did not feel it was challenging and I did not under their unclear instructions. I did not like the idea that I had to plant a bomb underneath the table. Actually I am not engaging with the game at all because I cannot handle it while many people are suffering.

It was horrible to put the scene when they show all the weapons they have in real pictures. Is this game supposed to be for teens? How would families of victims feel when they see these weapons? Showing these weapons to kids and teens kind of horror and terror. It is painful to see exactly how their kids have been killed with real pictures. It is a real tragedy that should we respect not to show it the whole world. Not only me who is angry about this game but I am sure there are hundreds of people who do not like the idea and the content of game. Why did they make people’s souls as a game? Mascaras and horrible death is not that kind of story that could be a videogame.

It was even more horrible when I came back to parking again and we start to shoot and kill students. It is a massage full of violence for teens that should not be available for them. I think we should not use the mascaras and the social pain for entertainment. If Kant were alive he would not accept this game at all. The creator is using a tragedy to make a successful game without take in consideration feelings of families who were affected. According to reference.com, Kant argued that any action taken against another person to which he or she could not possibly consent is a violation of perfect duty interpreted through the second formulation: "Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of any other, always at the same time as an end and never merely as a means to an end.” Super Columbine Mascaras RPG is presenting horrible mascaras in an entertainment form to create a videogame. Therefore, what is representing in the game is unethical and it considered violation of law, and players should be aware of that.

Another thing I have notices in the game that the instructions and directions are very bad. Many times I was wondering exactly what I am supposed to do next and I spent long periods of time to figure it out. Most of the time it made me lost instead of helping me going through the plot. For example, at the school parking I did not have any sort of indication of whom I should not kill or shoot. It was complicated for me and was not a comfortable game. I am not sure if this is because the creator of the game is a filmmaker and not a game developer. It could affect the game any way but over all it does not make a big difference.

After trying to follow the unclear instructions, many students had been killed at the parking. Then when I went to the school gate again, Dylan said to the player Eric “Don’t follow your dreams or goals or any of that sh**. Follow your F***ing animal instinct, if it moves kills it. If it doesn’t burn it !”. The message was quite shocking for me. Is this a kind of message you want present to a teen boy? Of course not! It disgusted me because of the usage of language and negative advises. After I read it, I tried to know how this game was rated but I did not find any sort of information. I wanted to know who is his target and what is his aim behind it.

Aug 8th, 2010 at 03:25:14     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

I downloaded Super Columbine Massacre RPG online and I started to play. At the beginning it was easy. I started to play as a third person view. I used the arrow keys to move in all direction. Whenever I want to accomplish any action, I face the item and press “SPACE”. There were always instructions appearing on the screen when I want to go out of any room with out finishing my mission. I noticed many bad words and the font on the screen was not clear for me because it is pixilated. The missions were described on the screen in a green bobble.

I did not know what is a RPG game. I felt that something is uncompleted until I found this simple definition. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a role-playing game (abbreviated RPG) is “a game in which players take on the roles of imaginary characters, usually in a setting created by a referee, and thereby vicariously experience the imagined adventures of these characters.'' (Source of definition: www.darkshire.net)

I was enjoying Super Columbine Massacre RPG until the moment when I knew it is based on a real tragedy. I was surprised when I knew that the game is a representation for a gruesome event. I think it is even worse than presenting the 9/11 to the whole world. In fact, Super Columbine Massacre RPG tells a story about a murder of thirteen students at a high school. There were two boys who were responsible for the awful murder. These boys are Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold . In the game I took the role of Eric at the beginning of the game while Dylan was giving me the instructions.

I started the game from Erick bedroom when his mom woke him up. I wanted to get out of the room to see what is next but I couldn’t because I had to make a call with Dylan. At the first I did not understand what I should take from the basement. Then when Dylan came and talked to me, I knew that I should collect guns, bombs, and a duffel bag. After collecting everything I left home. I was wondering how they used real photos for everything related to the crime. The designer is so serious about presenting all the facts about the event. I felt that it is not just a game but it is a very stressful imitation of a real misery.

In my opinion, it is awful to turn a massacre to a game which players will enjoy while families of the thirteen victims are suffering. Who would we blame for inventing this depressing game? Should we blame the killers at the first or the designer who is glorifying their gruesome action by making a whole video game about it? Winda Benedetti from msnbc.msn.com, stated that “the designer of the game Danny Ledonne has been called a “disgusting and sick individual,” a “monster” and the “Antichrist.” The press has grilled him for three years running. His life has been threatened multiple times after he did Super Columbine Massacre RPG”.

My initial reaction of Super Columbine Massacre RGP is absolutely negative. I think the media and the people who were affected by the shootings also do not agree with the content of this game. Danny Ledonne is responsible for presenting bad stereotypes about teenagers in high schools even if it is based on real story. This is not what teens are doing in schools and it is rarely happening. He is giving a bad representation of American teens and many people would think that most teens at high schools are involved in crimes. This representation is what we found in media, which has its powerful role on people especially on teens. Advertising the crime through a videogame is not what our teens need. They need more respectful kind of games that do not contrast with values and virtue ethics.

Jul 26th, 2010 at 12:43:25     -    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC)

After playing GTA: San Andreas several times, the game became an opportunity for accomplishment. I was trying to complete more missions than the last time but I couldn’t. I should admit that people who play these videogames are very smart because it is not easy at all. I think what attract people but not me is that this video game contains a lot of challenges, which are mandatory in order to complete the game. You should spend lots of hours and concentrate only on the game forgetting about the world around you. However, I did not understand how the map works or where I should exactly go. I was not doing the right thing by not following the map. That was a real problem I faced in the game. Geography is not one of my favorite subjects and I have a hard time to understand maps everywhere.

I did have to mute my computer because I did not want my son to hear the bad language. There are a lot of swears and whenever some one walk beside you he says offensive words.
GTA: San Andreas promotes sexuality, violence, strong language, and racism. It has more than one negative side. I think parents need to know more about this game to protect their kids. I can say that this game has every abnormal accomplish that a criminal could think of. When players participate in shooting, robbing, and killing they will be affected by the big amount of aggression they are received. Moreover, when you hear such swears and awful words for ten times in a game, you will use them unconsciously in real life. I am thankful it did not happen with me but I can see it happening with teen-agers and kids.

I will try this time to apply Act Utilitarianism on the general idea of GTA: San Andreas including all the bad behaviors in the game. It is obvious that GTA: San Andreas promotes sexuality, violence, strong language, and racism.
The benefits of this GTA: San Andreas are entertainment for players and lots of money for designers and publishers. On the other hand, the harms of GTA: San Andreas are more and worse than the benefits. Players are getting aggressive behaviors and learn awful stuff from the game. Also, parents spend most of their time teaching their kids good behaviors and these videogames are destroying everything Moreover, these kinds of videogames are negatively influence players’ observation, feelings and behaviors. Therefore, GTA: San Andreas is an unethical and immoral game. I think we should protect our generation from these virtual diseases to prevent the harms.

Briefly, Grand Theft Auto is an extremely aggressive game involving the stealing of cars, escaping the police, and killing people. I do not recommend this game for anyone under any circumstances. In my opinion, GTA: San Andreas is unethical videogame form all the perspectives.
