Oct 4th, 2010 at 23:43:39     -    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC)

    Day 2 of San Andreas:

I am starting to get used to the controls, but they are very strange to me since they force me to uncomfortably reach over to press the Return key all the time. I should re-bind or map it to another key.

I spent ~45 minutes to clear the paint mission because I forgot to save and had to start from before I got my character's hair cut and food, and failed miserably when I was nearly done with the 'tagging' mission. I evaded the Ballas members in the beginning part, but the police caught me on the later part. I drove around to escape and ended up flipping my car, which makes it blow up and fail the mission.

At the final part of the mission, an on-foot policeman stood behind me when I tagged another area without looking around. He chased me along with the Ballas since they also saw me spray over their tag, but I seemed to be able to outrun them rather easily, and without the officer calling in backup. I think in the real world, I would've been caught easily.

After I completed the mission, I was awarded "reputation" and money. A cutscene showed my character saying "C.R.A.S.H. took all my papers", and I have yet to figure out what that stands for.

Oct 4th, 2010 at 23:10:32     -    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC)

    (From Oct 3rd)

Today was my first day playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas by Rockstar Games. It is a third-person action/sandbox game that involves the life of a black man named Carl Johnson.
The game's opening cinematic narrates CJ's current life in San Andreas. He is just returning to his home when he is notified about his mother's death. When he gets home, he meets up with his family and friends, and is debriefed on the situation with the surrounding gangs. On a side note, I noticed policeman named Officer Tenpenny sounded a lot like Samuel L. Jackson. It also took me about 10 minutes to get used to the controls, since I am playing the PC-ported version. That is longer than I expected.

The first challenge I was introduced was to steal a bike after being shot up by the invading gang called "Front Yard Ballas", part of the "Ballas" Faction. I thought it was odd that I needed to steal a bike to complete an objective. The next task was to "tag", or spray-paint graffiti of CJ's gang over other tags. I also was put into a situation where I had to spray paint into Ballas gang members eyes, and run from the police.

I also noticed that the only non-black people I saw in-game were some of the police officers and the food vendors. I could easily see someone complain about that, but I don't mind it myself.

Something that I found to be very cool was the radio station system. There are many tracks that are played, and I was quickly fooled into thinking it was some sort of internet stream. I looked it up on the internet, and found out that 20-some DJs mixed and recorded radio sessions that could be dynamically altered and included weather forecasts related to the game.

I ended my hour-long session after I was killed by the police after trying to avoid being shot by them.
