Nov 11th, 2012 at 15:37:10     -    God of War: Ghost of Sparta (PSP)

I recently picked up the psp game God of War: Ghost of Sparta, weather its killing gods or traversing the underworld, Kratos is defined by his epic exploits. When I played the first psp game Chains of Olympus I was surprised that an epic game can be done on a small screen. Compared to the first game Ghost of Sparta in every way has been enhanced, creating an experience that standouts in an already incredible trilogy. The story is well put together set between the first and second games, it goes more in depth on Kratos childhood life with untold stories about his younger days and family. I would like to say more but I can’t spoil it for the new comers, but the story is well connected to the rest of the series that it feels like it should have been the first God of war game.
Ghost of Sparta has its usual combat style but has a new addition, a fire meter that is below the health and magic meter. The fire ability turns him into a regular Human Torch that allows Kratos to deal more damage and plants delayed fire explosives with certain strikes. Plus, the meter increases rapidly so you will always have it when needed, it is not a weapon its part of Kratos so its fun that Ready at Dawn had integrated it into your moves. Another fighting mechanic is a run and tackle move that makes Kratos feel more brutal and maneuverable. The evade roll is still tied to the shoulder buttons and same to the last game it is still unreliable and rough when done.
Ghost of Sparta doesn’t have allot of huge epic moments as the console games, but it does stack up nicely with a bunch of cool events that builds Kratos back story. The amazing visual quality and good contextual sequences makes it a must for God of War fans.

    Nov 4th, 2012 at 21:34:47     -    Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (360)

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, is an ambitious title featuring twin career modes that give us the choice to play the notorious racer or the renowned cop in the area of Seacrest County. Within the game you can progress and switch between being the racer or the cop as desired, allowing you to wear the badge or defy it. This feature keeps you in the game bringing up new events, cars and weapons that are exclusive to either the racer or cop.
As the racer you are tested (against the cops, by yourself, or other racers) with the traditional lap races, time trials and of course racing the hottest cars. The cop missions focuses on rapid response calls, taking down racers in interceptor mode and test driving new police cars. Within hot pursuit mode as the cop or racer you have options between offensive or defensive equipments. Both cops and racers have the option to use spike stripes and EMP blast. For special abilities, racers can use the turbo boost and radar jammers, and as the cop you can call in for assistance by bringing in helicopters or roadblocks. The hot pursuit mode is the most intense mode bringing in tools for strategy that makes it standout in this version of Need for Speed.
As you progress through the game the missions will start to get more challenging and difficult. As a racer the cops will get very aggressive with their cars and equipment to take you down. As a cop, racers will become less predictable, executes their equipment better and driving skills will constantly keep you changing directions. Luckily throughout the hardships you will rank up, unlocks new events, vehicles and upgrades to your equipment. You gain these rewards based on your driving skills, such as drifting, drafting, near misses, etc.
The only issue I had was that the camera would time to time show a cutaway showing an epic crash you caused would then cut back to your car that is still at high speed, thus may aim you towards a bad situation.
However to say, Criterion has made a successful game within the series gaining notoriety becoming Seacrest County’s most wanted racer or ultimate enforcer. The variety of car classes for either the cop or racer keeps you in the game exploring through the different speeds. The stunning levels are diverse showing the many weather changes and times of day, as you drive the car that best suits you.

    Oct 28th, 2012 at 14:10:42     -    spiderman: shattered dimension (PS3)

As all of you should know there are many different versions of a web-slinger known as, Spider-Man. Developed by Beenox Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions focuses on four different Spider-Man characters each within their own time. The main characters have their own world, art style, gameplay that keeps the player engaged and wanting for more. For example, The Amazing Spider-Man is a more modern world, while 2099’s world is more futuristic. Amazing Spider-Man’s world has amazing environments and his web based combat felt swift and strong. Plus, I loved going through 2099’s neon style environment and the free-falling combat made his world very intense. Ultimate Spider-Man’s world puts you in the black suit giving you up close but also range based combat. Plus, Ultimate Spider-Man is equipped with a rage meter that fills up the more you defeat your enemies, giving you a power boost that helps when you are surrounded by numerous foes. Yet, out of all the Spider-Man universes Spider-Man Noir was the most fun, because even though it isn’t an in-your face all out bash gameplay, it has stealth based levels where the shadows are your friend and silent takedowns are a must. Noir’s stealth and silent gameplay is much like Batman: Arkham Asylum/City.
Even with each boss fight regardless of which universe extends to head-on quick-time events on the boss themselves, and the environment (rocks, walls, pillars, etc.) to take them down instead of just attacking at the large health bar. I also enjoyed the Web of Destiny challenges, which are side tasks within the main story. The challenges allow Spider-Man to gain new moves, costumes, collectibles that you gain when you complete parts of the story in special ways, if it was taking down an enemy or running through the map in a certain amount of time.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is a great game it does have its issues with the camera when climbing walls or you zip to fast on screen, but it does give non-stop action with new surprises and gameplay with each level and universe.

    Oct 21st, 2012 at 22:44:54     -    Batman Arkham City (PS3)

Batman enters Arkham City the new home for the most outrageous criminals and psychotic criminals run amok. The city has become a prison with each section of the prison transformed to bear the signature of the villains controlling it. For example, The Joker lies within a Carnival, The Penguin nests in a museum and Two-Face in a courtroom. This is a well crafted game making it into a bigger open world facing many leads through a mystery plot that goes through great character moments until the unforgettable conclusion.
Arkham City does an incredible job showing off the cape crusader’s ability to switch between combatant, predator and detective. The new glide mechanic now has a dive bomb move that extends his flight speed and distance, improving the navigation of the city much easier and helps insist with combat and the grappling hook. The combat hasn’t completely changed by has been improved allowing Batman to attack different enemies in new ways, such as stun, longer assaults and enemy down attacks. Batman’s countering system makes him more diverse countering many enemies at the same time, starting with a kick to the face, to a punch to the head and then smashing to heads together. Thus, making Batman a far more agile and punishable combatant.
Aside from the main story the side missions offer more variety across the city that is mapped out to specific villains. For example, finding Mr. Freezes wife or following the murders of Deadshot. The side content does help players to extend their time on exploring the Arkham City experience. Also in this game the player can explore the city as Catwoman, her story intertwines with Batman’s, yet it is a little part of it, but still enjoyable. She has her own moves to attack or interact with the city using her claws or whip. Plus, I like that Rocksteady gave her, her own story/side missions and challenges to allow the player to spend time using Catwomen and not just making her an add-in.
In conclusion, the game is astonishing as it stands tall towards its predecessor bringing out the greatest of Batman’s moments. The city is very detailed with dark areas and architecture that shows off the villainous environments. The famous Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill never disappoint making the characters classic interactions come to life. The combat is very fluid making Batman’s maneuverability in the open world very impressive. Batman Arkham City is defiantly one of the best video games that Rocksteady Studios has released.
