So I might have played SMB3 for more than an hour since my last entry. But it's so addicting...must...stop..playing. I've been reflecting on my last entry about this game as well as the game from a designer's point of view. I now know why there are three warp whistles: if you go through the game without them, it is rewarding, but very challenging. I had to use one of my warp whistles, and now im in world 7. What I like most about this game from a designer's stand point is the variety of it. There's giant land, small land, cloud land, water worlds, and everything in between compared to the first two Super Mario Bros. Games. For a designer of this game, it must have been extremely challenging for them to create as many varied levels at the beginning of this game revolution. Not to mention the loads of secrets and special effects and hidden areas that most people don't even know exist.

I love the classics. Playing Super Mario Bros. 3 brings back so much nostalgia and good memories of times long gone. This game has the perfect mix of storyline, entertainment, levels, bosses, hidden secrets, and challenge to keep me intrigued for hours. I had to pry myself away after completing two worlds to write this entry. During this trip down memory lane, I have noticed a few things that I have not paid any attention to. For one, Mario's character in this game is much more fluid and adaptable. In the earlier versions of Super Mario Bros., Mario has very few movements. He has different positions for walking, running, and jumping, but little else. Mario's static character in the earlier game still made it fun and entertaining, but I enjoy seeing Mario as a more fluid character in this game. Not only can he run, walk, jump, he can fly, grow tails, become a statue, hid in a shoe, and become various animals by aid of items. These positions make Mario fun to watch and fun to use items on him, which aid in the levels anyway.
Secondly, in this verision of the Super Mario Bros. series, the creators have put more hidden secrets and items in the game. Its practically common knowledge that you can gain 2 secret whistles in the first world, and at least 1 other one in the second world. These secret whistles allow you to warp to a higher world out of 9, and by the time you obtain these 3 items, you can be at the last world, ready to take on the final levels and the final boss. I have mixed opinions about these whistles. I think one would have been sufficient, allowing the player to only warp ahead a little bit, instead of the whole way. But by allowing these 3 whistles adds too much temptation to skip all the exciting levels in the later worlds and just beat the game (if your good enough). Back to more playing..

All girls that play video games are either fat or freaks. So which are you?
-Quote on 1/18/2007 from a player in Counter Strike: Source.
It's hard being a girl in a male dominated game. Alright, it's not that hard, but at times it can be trying. I find myself constantly trying to prove that I'm female when people refuse to believe me. I've been asked to spray my picture, talk into my microphone, appear in Vent or TeamSpeak to validate my claim, and a number of other things to "prove my girlyness."
I've never sprayed my picture in any server and the in-game microphone usually doesn't do me any justice (I've been told I sound like a 10-year-old boy). But my favorite all time question is, "You're a girl and you play Counter Strike?" to which I reply "yes, I am," then certain people are so BOLD to say to me "What's WRONG with you?".... implying that normal, everyday girls are somehow incapable of being good at something that men have dominated for long enough. Girls, it's about time for a revolution. And much to certain people's chagrin, that revolution is happening right under their noses.
The statement and question at the top of this entry was directed at me today and quite frankly I was appalled. I hope he is pleasantly surprised one day when he realizes that I am neither fat nor freaky. I speak for women everywhere that play games when I say that our day has come, and we will sieze it to end this gross stereotype that can ruin a perfectly good gaming day. I will take that offense in stride as I try to erase this negative image of women in the gaming world. One day, when I can look back on these years and the years to come, and see just as many women as men in the gaming community, I will close my eyes, fold my hands behind my head, and say "I told you so" into the digital world that is cruel, unforgiving, and also my beloved home.

I'm addcited to CS:S. No matter if I'm having a bad day, good day, or anything in between, CS:S is the perfect release for stress or just a way to have fun. Today I played for an hour on a 24/7 Dust2 server. I consider the Dust2 map the best map that most servers have on rotation, as do many others. The perfect combination of boxes to hid behind as well as long passageways to snipe people from makes the camper or the sniper very content. I consider CS:S to be a very social game. I love talking to people in game via my mic, or just talking to my friends in Ventrillo that I've come to know. I almost never play with people I don't know, because there is no greater satisfaction than rubbing it in someone's face that they got owned by a girl.
Today I took into mind what we have been talking about in Professor Whitehead's class and noticed the graphics of the characters. Not entirely anime-like, with bulging eyes, noses, or facial features, but there are still attributes that make them pop out at you. All of the characters have rippling muscles, crew-cut hair-cuts, and carry around huge weapons no doubt by the aid of their Schwarzeneggar muscles. But beside these features, there is an incredible amount of detail. The Counter Terrorists carry nightsticks and have gasmasks, and the Terrorists have what looks like Blue-Tooth microphones on their ears (much like Prof. Whitehead). However, the colors of the characters makes the game intensely interesting. Generally, the Counter Terrorists are varying shades of blue, while the Terrorists can range from white, to black, to red. This variation of colors makes the game all the more challenging deciphering whether that character coming up the staircase is friend or foe. I've shot at plenty of teammates while avoiding the enemy when I first started playing. Luckily, today I was on top of my game and recognized which ones to shoot in time before they shot me.
