Jan 15th, 2009 at 23:53:41     -    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC)

I've heard many complaints about San Andreas, mostly involving the ridiculously giant map and the unnecessary skills you have to learn for each mission that you will never utilize again, but I haven't heard any complaints or comments about the content of the game itself, which is exactly what I have.
To start, the main character has changed from the usual GTA guy, which is fine, except that the new one is so stereotyped it's absurd. He is now a young, African-American man fresh out of jail, trying to avenge his mother's murder. He lives in a run down, violence filled neighborhood, straight out of the stereotypical American ghetto. A video plays explaining how "shit be fucked up G up in this bitch," and other things of that nature.
The first mission with this new character involves biking away from a rival gang, as they shoot at you out of their car windows for no apparent reason. I remember, way back when, that in GTA 2 you could be in a rival gang's neighborhood and they wouldn't mess with you until you messed with them. That's not the case anymore.
Meanwhile, as you are being lynched by gang members, the people on the street are heard shouting things such as "Yo Dawg, where's the weed at?" and "Nigga what you doing?"
I am not surprised at the profanity, violence, or the general obscene nature of the game, but the stereotyping really threw me for a loop. One interesting thing I noticed was that whenever I stole a car from a black character, the music on the radio was hip hop, as opposed to the talk radio or teeny bopper music that was being played in the cars of white folk.
I miss my fancy Italian mansion and my hookers and limos. I miss my streets filled with pseudo-BMWs and Jaguars. The psuedo-Escalade just doesn't cut it for me.
I can't imagine any person playing this game and feeling like they can identify with it, which seems like the road the game developers are going with it, so far. Go back to the greasy Italians. That's a stereotype we all enjoyed.
