Mar 10th, 2009 at 01:48:24     -    Super Columbine Massacre RPG (PC)

So back in the school I fought off some more students and fixed one of the bombs. It went off and killed a bunch more students. Prior to that there was a cutscene where Eric said how lonely he was and how he wished someone would notice him sitting alone. And how eventually began to hate them and look down on them. Clearly, he was jealous. His lack of social acceptance made him draw away and isolate himself. Forcing himself to believe he is better as an explanation for his self-induced isolation. Rather, than look at himself objectively, that maybe the reason they don't talk to him is because of his actions rather than everyone elses fault. The odds are stacked against him. Am I supposed to feel sorry? All kids feel those same feelings and yet they don't all go out and kill fellow students. The media blamed video games among other things, and all were things other kids did and they didn't murder. The whole trench coat mafia thing supports this. They didn't fit into any other clique so they made their own. Again, where were the parents during all of this? They had absolutely no idea what was going on. Maybe they didn't care or didn't understand? I have no idea. This game is sick and I am glad I don't have to continue "playing" it. I see no value in it.

I am still unable to get the game to work, but I found a complete walkthrough of the game on youtube. The developers said it should take about 5 hours to beat, watching most of the cutscenes and extras. The walkthrough on youtube is about an hour so i figure 6 minutes of it is about 30 min of game time. The remaining to game logs will refer to one 6 minute portion of the video. I will also write the logs as if I were playing, to make writing them easier. So I planted the bombs in the school and the car and went up to rebel hill to gear up. The killers obtained 4 weapons. I assume they were the same weapons actually used in the shooting. How do two kids obtain that many weapons? And who would even get them for two socially retarded and isolated kids? Whoever did must have known what they were going to do. How could you not? Anyway, I went back to the parking lot and the bombs didn't go off. I wandered around and killed students. This is absolutely ridiculous. There doesn't even appear to be any challenge. A few shots from a gun and they are dead. One of the major draws of rpgs is the battle system and in this game it is completely irrelevant. There really doesn't seem to be any other point than to just relive the events that took place. I wandered around the school and shot up more classrooms. One of the fights involved three janitors and I threw a napalm grenade at them. Again how did they have access to these weapons? What were their parents doing? Where were they? This game is ridiculous and immature. I still can't tell whether it is satirical or glorifying.

I was able to play for about 10 minutes. I get to the cafeteria to plant the bombs and there should be some dialogue between Eric and the other character about planting the bombs at two tables, however, I don't get the prompt. Then when I try and walk around the cafeteria and plant the bombs at the correct tables, nothing. From the brief amount I have played, I am not sure whether the developers are making fun of them or what. The first 10 minutes I played, prior to the problem in the cafeteria, I felt intense hatred for the main characters. The fact that they take the music and games seriously pisses me off. That and the music is crap. I haven't had the chance to kill anyone, however, the prospect almost sickens me, and I usually have no problem in other games. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that the subject actually happened and could have easily happened. I play some WWII first person shooters and feel disconnected with the time period and war in general. It feels like an event that took place in some distant land, whereas, columbine could have happened down the block. I'm all for free speech, however this game is in very bad tastes. It gives the chance to replicate a disgusting act of relatable violence.

Feb 8th, 2009 at 17:16:18     -    Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PC)

Just finished the third 30 minute session. Started off by goofing around a bit. I wandered around killing random people or running them over and blew up some cars. When the ambulance and fire truck got there I took out the drivers and then stole the fire truck and blasted some people with water. However, I quickly got 4 wanted stars and was taken out by a helicopter and tons of police. It was fun and I imagine it is more fun with bigger weapons. I loaded my game then and played a few missions. First I had to pick up a friend from prison and we went to some Mexican dude's house who owed him money. He took off on a motorcycle and we proceeded to chase him with our own, and we eventually caught up and took him and his buddies out. Another mission required me to pick up Sweet and some girl. They were trapped by a rival family and I had to take them out to rescue Sweet. The final mission I did was to go check out my sister's boyfriend. I found a low-rider with hydraulics and entered a contest. I had to match hydraulic maneuvers with music.
The missions involving the Mexicans were interesting and definitely promoted more stereotypes. They all had that Los Angeles ghetto Mexican accent and drove low-riders. This game definitely castes these characters into certain roles and never lets them become anything else. That observation is only from a few hours of game play, but I don't expect it to change. As I've mentioned in prior logs I see this game becoming more and more violent as the story unfolds. I am sure missions will get more ridiculous and I'll be required to kill many more people. There is also no really no deterrent to kill as many people as possible. If you are caught or killed you can always just reload from your last save. And I save after every mission so if something happens to me during a mission I can always just reload.
I have definitely had fun playing and I think everything in the game is there for a reason, at least based on what I think gang culture is like. None of the games in the Grand Theft Auto series are suitable for kids because of all the violence, sex, drugs, etc. present in them. I don't think they shouldn't be made and in fact encourage it because they are great games. Parents just need to take responsibility for what their kids play rather than attack the industry for what they produce.
