    I<3Aladdin's Mario Party (N64)

    [January 31, 2007 04:05:34 PM]
After pretty much mastering the Mario Party boards on the "Easy" level I decided to switch up to "Normal" (not saying that is much of a compliment at all). At first, it was ok. Not to easy, not too difficult. Then, pretty much out of nowhere, both Luigi and Wario ( CPU controlled) steal everything I've gained throughout the majority of the game on Wario's Battle Canyon. With four stars and over 100 coins, I had no doubt in my mind that that particular game was mine. However, little did I know Wario was about to change it all in the span of one mini game, the Roulette. Usually, I enjoy this one. I am typically on the recieving end of roulette, gaining more than I lose when it takes place. This time, howver, was different. In goes Wario, little smile on his face, waiting to take it all from me. He first chooses the middle box, revealing that the person to the right will receive a star from the person to the left. Now, I am already nervous. When stars are invovled, it's time to panic a little. After all, the person with the most stars becomse the "Superstar", which is, of course, the objective of the game. It is the second jump, Wario succesfully chooses himself as the reciever of the star. Now, it is between Luigi, Peach, and DK ( me). Luigi and I are both tied for stars, the only advantage I have is that I have mroe coins. Naturally, Wario, in a CPU conspiracy against Human players, completely bypasses both Luigi and Peach, heading straight for me. Thats right, I was robbed. There goes my star, with only 1 turn left. I am now in in second. which doesnt last long. Why? Of course, after the loss as result of Wario, Luigi is gracious enough to land on the Roulette mini game as well, and the same series of unfortunate events takes place. Again, I was robbed, my stars which I had worked so diligently on were taken from me and now I was left with the dreaded fourth place (peach now had the advantage with 150 coins to my 130). The game ends and I am not the superstar at all, I am not even in the closing ceremony. If you look in the background you see me, as DK, being shot out of a cannon in oblivion, a mere shadow of the glorious winning Kong I once was. The game was frusterating but did have its fun parts, hopefully, someday, the CPU's will get whats comoing to them .

I first played Mario Party at a very young age, possibly around ten, and am happy to say that it is just as entertaining now as it was then. It took me awhile to reaquaint myself to the mechanics of the game (i.e the board game based screen and movements). However, after the first round it all came rushing back. The mini games are, for the most part, great breaks from traditional play and provide excellent ways to make a comeback in coin collection if you are behind. I do have my favorites, the most being "Balloon Burst", a game consisting for attempting to blow up a balloon by alternating between pressing the "Z" and "A" buttons. However, there are some mini games that are far less entertaining and can possibly even be considered downright painful. Although they are usually few and far between, games requiring quick rotation of the joystick take all the fun out of that specific mini game. As far as characters go, DK or Donkey Kong is and always will be my ultimate favorite (hence the reason why I will never play the games in the series that do not present him as a character). To me, DK is the ultimate. Mario Party was and is an excellent single player game.
