    jp's Viewtiful Joe (GC)

    [August 13, 2005 02:13:42 PM]
A tried to play some level 5 a few nights ago. Tried. I don't know if my leet skillz have gone rusty or if the difficulty ramped up or what, but I had a hard time (3 attempts!) before I was able to beat the first wave of baddies! Phew!

Then I discovered that there was a "zero" wave (if I headed left instead of going right). Anyways, I spent about 45 minutes dying over, and over, and over. Not good.

I finished the 4th level the other night. It took a while, more than I thought, but that's the way this game goes. Basically you have to repeat, repeat and keep on repeating things in order to make some progress. It's a hard game, no doubt about it, but what makes it harder is the lack of save points. When you get to a level near the end you really don't want to have to go back and do everything again. So, you're "stuck" playing and playing until you can clear it.

When my wife asks me how much longer I'll be playing I say "Not much, I'm fighting the boss!". An hour later, I'm still fighting the boss...So, it's a long game to get through.

On somewhat of a sidenote, I'm really surprised by how much my wife hates this game. She won't play it, which I already knew. What shocked me is that she doesn't like to watch. At all. She has literally said that she thinks it is the worst game I have ever played! Wow. I'll have to get to the bottom of this. Is it the aesthetics? The weird action that makes things seem confusing? I don't really know, but I dig it!

It turns out that saving after failing to kill the boss means you restart the whole level. (but can keep all the stuff you've bought). Oh well, at least I was able to beat Mr. Rhino-dude this time around. (yeah!)

The next level was kind of cool (it is mostly underwater) especially a little segment at the beginning in a plane. I guess the best part of the whole 3rd level is that it is way shorter and the boss was way easier. So, I'm currently ready to start the 4th level, am I good or what?

I have no idea what the story is or what is going on. In fact, I've started to skip all the cut-scenes not because they are boring but because I cannot, for the life of me, understand what the heck the characters are saying! I really wish they had subtitles because they audio is so poor (or the game is so noisy?) that I can't make out what the characters are saying. Oh well, at least I know I'm not playing this game for the story...

    Ugh!

I still haven't been able to beat the end boos of level 2. There must be something wrong with me, eh? Anyways, I noticed that once you die you get a chance at a continuing. If you refuse that, you can save! Neat! (I really dread having to do the whole half of the level again...really) I haven't actually re-loaded since, so I don't know how it will start up again, but I used a new save slot just in case.

Holey moley is this game hard...and loooong. The levels are really long. So much so, that I thought I had cleared levels 1 and 2 but nooooo! I have yet to clear level two. In fact, I had only cleared level one by the end of my last post!!

At least I can now say that I got to fight the end boss of level 2 (which means I 've passed the mid-level save point). Sheesh, this thing is long. But... it's really fun and cool. No regrets in that department.

I've also been getting much better at the game. I'm slowly mastering the VFX powers (in particular the slow one) and I'm starting to rack up some points. Yeah!

I got this for my birthday (a while ago) and I had also played the demo. So, I know what I'm getting into...and it is a wickedly cool game with lots of little nice touches.

I'm playing on "Kids" instead of "Adults" because I know this game is really hard. Kids mode is really hard. Adults mode is insane. So, laugh all you like...but I really want to get to the end of the game.

Yesterday I must have played for about an hour and I was able to finish levels 1 and 2. I got partway through 3 and then I had to stop. Unfortunately this game spreads its save points pretty far...but, for now...I'm doing ok.

I really like the game mechanics. The slowing down time and speeding it up are brilliant. In particular, I like how they are integrated with many of the "puzzles". Yeah!

I hope to play some more today...

Really nice ideas, interesting gameplay. Pity about the difficulty level and the distance between save points.
