    jp's Urban Dead (PC)

Apparently zombie characters now have a new skill...it seems they can ransack buildings! I have no idea how this works since I'm currently playing as a human....but I am quite curious!

Can you believe I'm still playing this? Me neither...but it's true.

I'm a level 36 civilian. This means that I'm maxed out in all the skills avaiable (zombie and human) but one. (Brain rot, which makes your zombie harder to revive)

I decided to head to the north-eastern-most corner of the map. Just to see what was going on. There's plenty of action!

There are some games that have the allure of "just one more turn". You know, the games where you just want to get in a few more minutes of play. You know, just go up one more level, kill one more monster, get enough cash to buy one more upgrade. Whatever you want to call it....

This game has, to me, the allure of "just one more day". My character has been maxed out for quite a while now. I still log on almost every day just to check if today will be the day where something new will happen. Will I get lucky and get a chance to try out a new skill? Go to a new location?

So far, I haven't been terribly lucky. Since I turned zombie I've only had one new skill. (survivors have had about 3-4 new things added...items and other stuff).

So, why do I keep on playing? Maybe tomorrow will have something new, and it doesn't take more than 10 minutes to use up all my action points anyhow..So, what is there to lose?

I've been playing as a zombie for a while. A lone zombie at that. So far I've discovered that it is much easier than I thought to break down barricades (I can usually get in to a very strongly barricaded place with 50 action points). From this I have learned that a mob of zombies can break into anything really quickly.

    This is good.

I've also discovered how enjoyable it is to break into a safehouse. I know that I won't be able to cause much damage (especially if there are more than a few survivors hidin inside) but there is a certain joy in just breaking in. I'd love to see the faces of the survivors reel back in horror as a zombie breaks in.

Another thing I enjoy doing is picking my victim. When you break into a safehouse there are usually some 4-8 survivors in perfect health. How do you pick which one to attack first? I don't like going for alphabetical order by name or anything like that, so I've devised the following "algorithm".

    1) Start attacking wounded survivors. (concentrate on one until dead, then move on to the next)

    2) Start by attacking survivors with 50hp (instead of those with 60 hp).

    3) Attack the survivor with the most annoying name.

I really dig going after characters with annoying names like "Leet ZombKiller" or "BadAssDude". Those are the first to go. So, if you have a normal name like "Bob Smith" or "Frances Black", you will be safe from me...for the most part.

I'm a zombie ravaging Jensentown... we are a mob of 20+! We just broke into a Police Station..Haaman Hambargaz! Har! Har! Har!

(I actually broke in alone, with 10 APs left and MISSED ALL MY ATTACKS!)

I'll see what the situation is like tomorrow when I have more action points left to spend.

    Oops. I've been revived.

I'm having a harder time finding a horde of zombies than I originally imagined. Gotta keep trying!

I've decided to "go zombie". I've gotten bored with the survivor game so I hoarded xp and stood out in the open waiting to get dismembered. It actually took a bit longer than I expected...even after attacking some civilians and then standing next to them!

Anyways, I'm now an official zombie who's trying to join a horde somewhere...

I'm back at Bale Mall. Surprisingly, the return trip was much easier than expected. Not only did it take me less time to get there, but I also made it back without experiencing any "panic moments" (oh no, where am I going to hide!). Now that I'm back at the mall I'm actually kind of bored. There isn't really much going on. Sigh.

I was eventually able to make my way inside the armory at Fort Creed. It was full of zombies!!! (and some sorry survivors) I found a flak jacket and did the best I could in trying to fend back the undead. I even fortified the barricades a little and then scampered away to a safer location. I'm now heading back to Bale Mall.

    Oh no!

The barricades didn't hold overnight. I woke up this morning to find 2 zeds in the lobby and two other survivors hiding away. I've been wounded, but it's not terribly serious. A quick shot and some bandages should overcome the infection. I've got to move on now, the fort isn't that faraway but this neighborhood is extremely deserted. I hope that it's not the calm before the storm.

I'm making a run for Fort Creedy (in the suburb of Peppardville). The buildings on the way there have been surprisingly empty. Many of them have their doors wide open, there are a few zombies milling around and very few survivors. I hope that my hiding place, loosely barricaded as it is, will be strong enough to last me through the night.

Why am I heading for the fort? I guess I want to take a look around the armory and see if I can find anything neat. (basically, I want a flak jacket)

Well fancy that. It's been quite a few days and here I am. Still playing.

There is actually something quite fun going on at the moment. A revive clinic approximately 10 blocks south of the mall I liv eout of is being overrun by zeds. A huge horde. (some survivors tell the tale of at least 250 shambling undead). So, I've spent my time scrounging supplies and heading south to help out. I heal wounded and infected survivors, try to reinforce the barricades, throw dead bodies out into the street and then retreat. It's pretty exciting.

The last location I went to was a police department. There were already 10 zeds inside. I was able to kill one, clear 2 bodies out, build up the barricades and heal up a poor soul who was down to 11 hit points! Then I had to scram... I have no idea what was going on outside but the situation inside looked very grim indeed. Most of the zeds seem to have brainrot (so I couldn't use my revive syringes). I hope the poor souls inside wake up in time to deal with the imminent doom that has already made its way inside their hideway.

Goood luck, godspeed and get the hell out of there!

I've almost maxed out. With the exception of headshot (a skill I'll never buy 'cause it is annoying to zombie players), I think I've only got two skills left. I'm a bit saddenned by all of this because it means I've pretty much reached the end of the game. Not that I can't keep on playing, but there really isn't much point to it.

So, I've been thinking about what to do before quitting. Should I load up on ammo and weapons and go out in a blaze of glory? Should I try to make my way to a cool location I've never been to? (I'd like to check out a fort) Should I just hide out in some "far-away" place in case I decide to come back? Should I start to play again as a zombie?

    Suggestions are welcome!

I'm getting pretty close to maxing out my character. In fact, the game has gotten rather boring since there is virtually no risk anymore. I'm practically invulnerable (as long as I leave enough AP points to get back into a building).

I've recently decided to work on my combat skills. I hadn't previously because I thought all the other stuff was more fun. The searching, the reviving, etc. Now I'm enjoying the shooting. I don't actually enjoying killing the zombies since I always wonder, are these players hoping to get revived and continually getting wasted? Anyways, I might get over that...hehehe.

Urban Dead has been a bit boring lately. Too easy. I've been holed up in a mall. I rabidly search for medkits and then wander around healing people. I get loads of experience points from this. Then I repeat the whole thing. Free running (a skill that allows you to move from one building to another without exiting is really powerful...since I can move around pretty much freely as long as I stop inside a heavily barricaded building.... I'm not sure if I'll keep on playing once my character is maxed out (ie, there are no more skills left to learn)

Lucas Argyle (Jetgirl) and I have finally rendevouzed. He is now alive again, but the cost was high. Mainly in my stress. On my way over I was accosted by a horde of zombies. Unfortunately there were no buildings nearby that I could hide in, and then I ran out of action points.

I though I was doomed. The zombie horde was slowly awakening and I was stranded in the middle of the street. I was definitely going to join the ranks of movie-character idiots that get zombified while trying to help someone else. ;-)

It was close...in the two hours I spent trying to relocate I was attacked several times. Infected even! Now moving became even more painful.. Fortunately I found a weakly barricaded factory to hide inside. There were only two other characters and the neighborhood is literally teeming with undead.

Lucas Argyle was able to shuffle his way to the entrance and I was able to recognize him, revive him. He was then able to heal me up...now we have to plan our next moves. Where should we run to? We need supplies...

    ..and now, I'm dead again!

I really, really, really hope that some idiot zombie hunter doesn't come by and get me with a headshot. (you lose all your accumulated XP)

    Sigh.

Yay! I've been revived and am now trying, desperately, to get some XP in order to gain some new skills. Skills I need badly.

The worst part of being a zombie is that there really isn't anything to do. Zombies can only get XP by attacking and have less skills available to them. There is currenly a pretty big discussion on one of the mailing lists due the unattractive gameplay that zombie players have. It will be hard to come up with new alternatives to that without breaking many of the zombie canon rules. (zombies are slow, zombies can't communicate, zombies don't work together, zombies can't use stuff, etc.)

    I'm very dissapointed.

I got stuck outside the mall (in the 15 minutes since I left the barricades were SUPER reinforced) and in less than 20 minutes I was dead. (again) Oh well, I'll just wait around until someone revives me...and then, BAM! A Zombie hunter comes by, nails me...and I lose 50 pts of experience. Grrrr! To make things worse, I then look at my "stats" and it turns out I've lost all the zombie skills I earned...they don't figure at all. What? That REALLY sucks..

So, I'm currently sitting around waiting to see if I'll get revived or not...if not (I'll give it a day) I'll stop playing and move on to something else.

Word is there is a horde of 40 zombies only 6 blocks away. They totally ripped through some barricades and feasted on the hapless souls inside an old cinema. We hope they don't come for us next. People are starting to freak out, seriously!

Fortunately I've been able to find a shotgun, 1 shell and a pistol clip. Fat lot of good that will do me without any weapons training! I've also picked up some first-aid kits that should come in handy if worst comes to worst. I don't plan on becoming a zombie again.

I decided to leave the hospital and head for a mall. I really need to get my hands on some sort of weapon! I made it safely to Giddings Mall [83,41] where there must be a million other survivors. I don't know if we'll all make it... not enough food. Water is getting scarce.

So far no luck finding a good weapon, though for now I can make do with the baseball bat.

I'm currently hiding in a place with about 20 other people! There is a hospital 2 blocks away where I find first-aid kits. I use them on humans out in the streets and I'm hopefully able to save them. I've picked up a Necrotech skill which now allows me to use DNA extractors. Basically, I can look at the info on a zombie, find out the character's name and stuff like that. I still can't use the syringes (which bring them back to life) but I'm hoping to be able to do that soon! For now, I'll just work on the healing bit.

Yay! I'm back to human...but now I cower in fear inside a building with 10 other survivors! My skills suck and I don't know what I can do to get more XP. Like a character in a real zombie movie, I'm afraid to go anywhere by myself in case I get zombified again. At least I can talk now! ;-)

When I last logged on, someone (August Beldoe) had injected me with something and brought me back to life! Yay! (I really want to search for stuff in buildings and all that). However, some idiot zombie walked up next and killed me again! Rats!
So, I'm back to being a zombie. Sigh.

Anyways, I'm currently hanging out outside Nuttycombe Auto Repair in Heytown. There are a WHOLE lot of humans around and a few of them have the skill to revivify me! I'm really hoping someone decides to (instead shooting me down). It's weird 'cause I really just want to say "Hey! Revivify me please!" but I just have to stand around going "Mrh.?" (and hoping someone will interpret that as a plea...

The life of an itinerant zombie isn't much fun. After the initial excitement of rending flesh wears off you're not left with much else to do. So, here I am, wandering the streets in search of easy pickings. It's been getting harder and harder to find humans hanging out in the streets waiting to be mauled by the likes of me. I've also had more than a few run-ins with very dangerous humans..the kind that deal 5 or 10 pts of damage in a single hit!

So, in order to make the best of my undead experience I've decided to check out some of the community aspects of the game. In other words, I want to gang up with other zombies and take out pesky humans that are holed up and barricaded inside police stations and whatnot. Actually, I wouldn't mind being "revived" as well. It seems that humans have access to more skills, can talk in-game, can use objects, etc.

We'll see how it goes...for now I patrol some Urban Dead webboards in hopes of getting some leads.

I just gained another level! Wahoo! I mean, "Greeaaaaargh!"

As a new skill I picked "Lurching Gait" which allows me to NOT spend 2 pts to move from one location to another. (I only have to spend one). This should allow me to make better use of my action points when prowling the streets...Hehehe.

Awww man, I've been killed a few more times.. but, you can't seem to put down a zombie! Grrraaaaah!

I've also just noticed that it costs 2 pts. to move from one area to another. Zombies are sloooow, and that means that my action points get spent in only a few minutes. Interesting concept for a game, eh? You can't play more than 5 minutes a day...

I'm hanging out with 22 other zombies! (we don't talk much...we just sort of shuffle around, I guess).

I'm still 3xp short of learning a new skill. This is really frustrating since I've had a hard time actually finding someone to attack...sigh... I have had DNA samples extracted from me a few times, though I have no idea what that's for. Oh well, I'm out of action points for the day. (50 is way too few...)

Being a zombie does have its benefits...hehehe.

First of all, your base attack (hands) has a 20% sucess rate (instead of 10% with my live character). The downside is that you can't talk, use items (including the ones I had scavenged), open doors, etc.

Anyways, I just killed my first human! (JackEves, if you are reading this...I apologize..) I now have 57 experience points and have started to think about what kind of "leet" zombie skills I want to learn. I'm not sure whether to take "Vigour Mortis" which gives me +10% to my attacks or "Memories of Life". This last one lets me open doors. So, the decision is whether to improve my chances of getting xp by doing more damage or by gaining access to more characters...decisions, decisions.

For those of you who are wondering, in this game you have a certain number of action points. (max 50) Every half-hour or so you get a point back and EVERYTHING you want to do pretty much costs a point. So moving, attacking, searching, etc. all cost a point. I like this sort of system because it means that you can only do so many things...thus, powergamers that play 25 hours a day don'r runaway from everyone else in terms of skills and experience.

For those who want to say hi to my character I'm standing outside Stampfordham Cinema in Hollomstown. If there is a dead body there you can say hi to JackEves.

Following Jetgirl's lead, I've also given this web-based game a try. I really like the post-holocaust theme of the game and I couldn't care less about the fact that it has no fancy graphics. In fact, it has no graphics at all...at least as far as I can tell.

I also decided to make a human civilian. I kind of get a kick out of (virtual) looting, so I thought I might as well increase my chances of doing it succesfully.

Before I get into any impressions, the website is REALLY having a lot of trouble handling requests. Currently I can get less than 1 out of 10 of my actions through. This is very frustrating since it is really hard to get anything done and if your character is out in the street, things can get dangerous for you... I found this out the hard way. I spent a good 45 minutes trying to get into a building with no luck (I would give it a couple of tries every 5 minutes or so). When I finally got a "hit", my character was already dead. Mauled by an itinerant zombie.

    Sigh.

Now of course I'm wondering what it is you're supposed to do as a zombie...but lets hope I can actually so something!

By the way, the game is at www.urbandead.com
