emerrim1's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS3)

    [September 28, 2011 11:37:18 AM]
Unfortunately, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas was checked out of the gaming lab. I decided to play Grand Theft Auto IV because it was the only one that would work with the available televisions. This version of the game started with a girl whipping a man until he was bleeding. It seemed that my character was on a boat to begin with. He also appeared foreign, and I could not always understand what he was saying.

I got in the cab that the game told me to get into, and I immediately crashed because I have not used an XBox controller before. It took me a very long time to get out of the situation, so I abandoned the car and started running to see if I could get another car. However, it was hard to get into other cars. This game is very different from the one I have played the past two days.

The language did not appear to be as revolting as the San Andreas version. It was not as racist, and they did not use swear words every time they spoke a sentence. This version seemed to be more about family, almost in a mob-like style. Although the language was improved, there were still posters of almost naked girls, and of course the whipping of the man in the opening scene was not pleasant. I would recommend this version of the game to anyone over the other because it is much more laid back, or at least it was for as far as I had played. It did not seem to enforce violence or harsh language, and I found it much easier to play.

Today was a much better day for me playing Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I was able to start from the beginning with all the necessary game controls and story line. My character was dropped off in the middle of the hood by the cops, and the top left hand corner had pop-ups that contained helpful hints on where to go and what to do. It was so much easier to play!

Although I was able to figure out how to do most of the moves to beat people for their money and weapons, I still think this video game is way too aggressive. Not only do the officers make racial slurs, but I also found myself feeling extremely uncomfortable hearing these video game characters talk so harshly to each other. I can see how this game appeals to males, but I have a hard time seeing girls take a liking to beating up street walkers and old people. I know my brother enjoyed this game a lot, as did his friends, and it did not make them violent or criminals. However, I find it impossible for this game to not negatively influence less mature teens and or children to act as if they were the characters in the game.

Again, I did think it was fun to play this game, but I just do not think it is an ethical game to indirectly teach the player to beat or kill people for money and weapons. This game seems too extreme, and although it appeals to many people, I continue to find myself with my jaw open when the characters have conversations with friends or pedestrians. Maybe tomorrow I will feel differently, but I am not counting on it.

Today was the first day that I attempted to play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I have not played a video game in about ten years, and I struggled a lot in the beginning with the controls. The guy working in the game lab had to set everything up for me, which I was very thankful for because I might have broken the PS3 had I tried to set it up. He told me that someone was already playing the game, so he had me start in the middle of the game. I honestly had no idea what I was doing. I ran around in circles for a good ten minutes until I found out how to punch someone. Then, I went around punching everyone in sight because it was the only move I knew how to make. I tried hitting other buttons, but I could not manage to get anywhere. I found this game extremely challenging because it did not provide any guidance or clues as to where to go or why.

I thought that this game was extremely violent and inappropriate. Not only did the characters smoke pot, but they also said a very demeaning word that I do not think should ever be used in a video game, no matter who is playing it. It disgusted me to even hear the words and conversations going on between my character and his friends. The setting was in the "hood", and although I could not hear very well, it seemed that there was a lot of talk about sex, drugs, and violence. I know there are kids who play this game who are not of age to be subject to this kind of language and life style. Although the game does present some aspects of the real world, I do not think it is right to be using such graphic and violent images on the screen.

Despite my negative opinion of the social aspects of this game, I did find myself wanting to play more. I am not sure why, but I found the game to be somewhat of a puzzle that I wanted to complete. Tomorrow I am going to see if I can start from the beginning of the game so that I can try to understand Grand Theft Auto a little better.
