    bri's Valkyrie Profile (PS)

    [August 13, 2004 01:20:12 PM]
I came back to Valkyrie Profile a few times last winter and spring, mostly for the combo system. The combos and dungeon explore mechanics are probably my favorite aspects of the game. (Though I still love some of the catch phrases, maybe once a month.) For better or worse, these mechanics are available in other titles whose narratives have a tighter hold. Combos make up a significant part of a number of console RPGs (especially tactical ones), so I tend to reach for Breath of Fire IV to satisfy my combo cravings lately. Probably my favorite instance of the exploration mechanic appears in Xenosaga, where, like in VP, your exploring actions can give you an edge or hinder you in the combat.

I haven't played VP further since April, mostly because I was playing my roommate's copy, and I moved out at the beginning of May. (Incidentally, it was to get out of the dorms, not to get away from that roommate.)

Got through the first dungeon a couple days ago. Won't have Freya tagging along to help us. Yolanda's almost ready to be sent to Valhalla, but we'll need her to stick around with Freya leaving us. Magic's mighty handy for setting up combos.

Near the end of the dungeon we weren't comboing like previously. I'm not sure if that's a question of me getting tired and not timing things very well or a change in difficulty. The dungeon boss was pretty easy though. (Course, I went around and faught every monster in the place before that, and the designers might have expected people to run away or avoid some battles.)

As the goddess Lenneth Valkyrie, rescue the souls of those recently slain in battle and prepare them to fight in the battle of Ragnarok.

A strategy RPG that takes some interesting risks in its win conditions, interaction scheme and visual presentation. Some of these risks pay off, some don't. (For example, this game's probably not for those that don't enjoy sizeable cutscenes or platform adventure style dungeon mechanics.) The basic game interaction depends upon the player stringing together their four warriors' attacks into powerful combos to overpower their foes. Added to this is the necessity to make your warriors more heroic so Odin will want them for the impending war. (The player makes the characters more heroic by spending experience points gained in battles and special events to improve various battle skills and heroism attributes (like bravery, selflessness, etc...). The better the attributes, the happier Odin is with your work, the higher Valkyrie's approval rating, and the more likely you'll get the
