    jp's Hammerin' Hero (PSP)

    [November 7, 2011 04:53:59 PM]
It's not often that I get to play a game that's "light" in lots of different ways. First of all, it's short, it's light-hearted and amusing, it's over the top, and it's mostly uncomplicated.

Hammerin' Hero is very much a "traditional" 2D sidescrolling beat 'em up with a few tricks up its sleeve. But not that many. The premise is as crazy as you would imagine: the hero (Gen) is up for saving anyone and does so by beating up the bad guys. He changes appearance and has access to different weapons (one per stage, but you pick before you start) but they're mostly the same. Well, except that they're all wacky! (the sushi chef costume is the best. It's mostly lighthearted and unremarkable except for one little detail I really enjoyed!

Whenever you rescue a civilian or take out a bad guy, an entry pops up in something like an almanac. The enemies and civilians basically send you "thank you notes" you can read to learn a little bit more about them and why they're so grateful to you for saving them (or showing them the error of their ways). It's completely unnecessary and irrelevant to the game - but it made a huge difference to me in how I related to the experience. I know it sounds cheesy but it made me feel like what I was doing mattered (just a little bit) more. The tone was also very much in line with the humor and zaniness of the game...

Light and fun. Totally worth it at a discounted price.
