    jp's Sword & Poker (iPd)

    [February 6, 2012 10:44:37 PM]
I think I heard about this game via Edge magazine that described it as combination rogue-like with poker. That description alone made the game worthy of looking at! After all, I LOVE rogue-likes..and the poker side, well that seemed intriguing.

The game isn't really much of a rogue-like, to be honest. It's closer to an RPG (+poker) which isn't a bad thing either. In fact, the game has been compelling enough that as I write this I've beat the game once already and I'm working my way through the bonus (extra?) floors that open up after you beat the main boss.

In a nutshell, the game is segmented into dungeon floors, each with a bunch of monsters you have to fight to get to the stairs down to the next floor. Some monsters have "treasure" (which you use to get points that let you buy equipment) and you don't always have to fight them all. Fighting a monster requires that you play a poker match-3 type game (make poker hands, not match three) to deal damage.

    There's a nice review here (http://toucharcade.com/2010/01/12/sword-poker-a-fantastic-hybrid-of-poker-and-rpg/).

This isn't the first match-poker game I've played, but so far it's definitely the most intersting. In other games I've played, in order to make things harder, you get "penalties" against you. For example, fewer cards, or missing information, or you need to make a hand quicker, etc. In this game, it's the exact opposite! As you buy equipment and get magic powers (special abilities) you have MORE options and can do a lot better. Of course, this is offset by using tougher monsters (more HP) and so on. In all, it's an interesting progression since the core game is essentially the same throughout.
