    Jade's Metal Slug (Arcade)

    [January 11, 2007 10:58:48 PM]
I was over at a friend's the other day and instead of doing my physics hw, he whipped out the metal slug anthology on his Wii. Metal Slug (There are 7 or so of them but I tend to consider them all different faces of the same game) is in my opinion one of the better Arcade games I've ever played, and is one of the few games I have actually tossed quarters into in a real arcade. The basic premise of the game is: Blow shit up.

The game is structured into 6 stages, each of which are abundantly populated both with a myriad of characters and objects for you to blow up, and a collection of gratuitous weapons which you can employ in the blowing up of previously mentioned entities. Honestly, I'm really crap at the game, and a very common part of my playing it is me blowing up.

The game probably has a story and characters. Well, if it does, it's not overtly developed. The plot seems to be something along the lines of: "The bad man did something bad and has many henchmen, lets kill them all" and the character lineup reeks of stereotypical Japanese Video game warrior. Not that this is really a problem. The reason you play the game is to blow shit up.

The game engine itself seems to be incredibly simple, with little in the way of physics. Instead it relies very heavily on a complicated scripting system that triggers pretty much everything. Because of this the emmergent behavior is low, the replay value is low, but the chance to break the game is also low, and the gameplay experience is predicatable, which in this case might be a good idea, in case you are looking for a game that without a doubt grants you the opportunity to blow shit up.

We played through two of the metal slug games...I think 5 and 4. I didn't notice too much of a difference except 4 had zombies at some point.

My scores for the game on the Jade-Duylgebs and Jade-Acurf scales are

(Estimated difficulty of making the game)
    D]Game Database --- 2
    U]User Interface -- 1
    Y]Level Layout ---- 1
    L]Level Scripting - 4
    G]Game Engine ----- 1
    E]Special Effects - 2
    B]Level Graphics -- 3
    S]Sprite Graphics - 3
    SCORE: 4+1+1+16+1+4+9+9=(45)!

    (Estimated worth of the game)
    T]Technically Advanced ----- 1
    C]Cinematically Impressive - 3
    C]Custamizability ---------- 1
    R]Replay Value ------------- 1
    F]Fun ---------------------- 4
    SCORE: 1+9+1+1+16 = (28)!
