Final Fantasy 7 is a turn based action role-playing game. Unlike its predecessors or any other role-playing game, this game has an incredible amount of character development. The game has countless cut scenes, which seem meaningless at first, but each cut scene makes the player feel as if they are actually inside of the game travelling with the characters on an adventure and provide the player with personality of the characters. The game gives a feeling of an actual pilgrimage or adventure with characters who feel almost real. Not only that, but another unique aspect to the game is that whenever the player travels to almost any area with no monsters, the characters split up and do their own things, giving the player a chance to go and talk to each other character. The place the character is, the action he or she is doing, and what that character says to the player gives even more character development. The game has an almost infinite amount of character development compared to any other role-playing games of the time. Each character is easy to relate to as well, whether it is issues with family, issues with society, religion, or naiveté.
Not only is the character development and story line amazing, but another unique aspect to the game is the fighting system. The game allows for the player to use all characters available during a single battle, but only three fighting in the frontlines at a time. This allows for strategies, versatility, and advancement of all the characters at the same time. The level-up system is also interesting and influential to many other games. The system involves a graph with nodes connecting to each other, each node gives the character a stat or skill, and the character progresses the graph node by node. With this system, it is possible to have characters learn the skills of any other character in the game but the positioning of where the character is on the chart makes it more difficult to learn some skills than others. Although this game does require some effort or skills in the battle system, it is still not a game known for its action.
