    jp's L.A. Noire (PS3)

    [January 8, 2013 05:48:43 PM]
You could argue that I've been looking for an excuse to move on to another game. I found a pretty decent one. The game has crashed on me every single time I've played it. It usually happens early, but so far I'm 3 for 3. Well, the last time it actually crashed twice. I've decided to move on to something else.

I've enjoyed the game so far, it's really cool. But the crashes - too much for me right now. So, my highlights?

    (1) Years of watching CSI-type shows has me (inner voice) yelling at the cops in the game for messing up the crime scenes. But hey, I guess it's pretty authentic for the time.

    (2) Turning on the siren as you drive around and watching NPC cars do what they should (pull over and stop) is priceless. SO much better than driving around in GTA. Even if the cars here are slower and much more awkward to drive (based on my limited experience of 3 cars).

I started playing L.A. Noire last night with a bit of trepidation. The whole debacle surrounding its release is still somewhat fresh in my mind - issues of credit, terrible working conditions, and so on. I felt a bit guilty about playing a game, enjoying it, and thus endorsing the practices that took place in its creation. Of course I don't know the whole story, just bits and pieces from what I've read here and there, and this is by far the only game made under such circumstances. Does that justify not playing it? Or does that really make playing it a terrible thing? It didn't help that 5 minutes into the game, upon kneeling down to peek at my first (possible) piece of evidence, the game decided to freeze. Maybe it was some sort of message or was a I looking for an easy excuse to not play?

I did keep on playing though. Sigh.

So far I've been enjoying the backstory cut-scenes, they're starting to shed a bit of light on the main character (Officer Phelps is it?) and the "case" structure seems a bit strange so far. I played 3 "cases" that are essentially tutorial levels - find the owner of a crime scene gun (investigation), chase down a perp (running and brawling), and respond to a bank heist (shooting). The reason I use case in quotes is that they've mostly been scenarios, not real investigative cases in the detective/private eye sense. I was really getting into the first one. I investigated a crime scene, found a weapon, went to a gun shop, traced it back to the owners apartment, subdued the suspect, investigated the apartment...but as soon as I found the first (only?) clue - the whole thing ended. It was a bit of a letdown since I don't know how it all ended - was the owner of the gun guilty? If so, why did he kill the victim? Etc. I'm hoping we'll come back to it later, but maybe not. I'm not really sure how the game is structured (are some cases "throwaway" diversions?).

Oh well, so far it's been interesting and I'm hoping to get to some meatier bits soon...

Really enjoyed it, until I realized that having the game crash every time I played just wasn't enjoyable.
