    jp's Hitman GO (iPd)

    [September 4, 2014 06:09:18 PM]
I've had limited play experience with any of the games in the (regular?) Hitman series. I'm still quite familiar with the premise and what they're about. So, I was quite surprised by Hitman GO. It's neither a cash-in, or a port, but rather a remediation that's unexpected and surprising. And also highly polished.

Hitman GO is, in a nutshell, a boardgame experience for the ipad. It's also a, in my mind, successful distillation of the core concept of the Hitman series: navigating space without getting spotted in order to eliminate a target/reach an objective. The only major element that is missing from the regular series is the "open-endedness" the regular games provide. In Hitman GO your progress is quite linear, and it is fair to say there's only one path to success. It's quite literally a puzzle game you need to solve.

So far I've unlocked 3 scenarios (presented in the interface as boxed boardgames) and I've enjoyed how new mechanics and elements are introduced and how they change the way you approach the puzzles. They also slowly add more elements from the original game - bringing it closer to the full range of "verbs" you have in the regular game. For example, in the beginning you can't wear disguises or shoot people.

I'm looking forward to the 4th (or is it 5th?) scenario because it's description explicitly notes how it was directly inspired/adapted from one of the videogames (or a scenario in one, I'm not sure right now). I'm curious to see how the narrative/storyline from the videogame was adapted....
