    dkirschner's Super Hexagon (PC)

    [October 2, 2015 11:36:41 PM]
7/19 - I beat Hexagon difficulty! Wooooohoo! I’ve gotten 40 seconds into Hexagoner. There are some tough new patterns to figure out. I can get past any single difficult pattern most of the time, but when they are back to back, I still get thrown for a loop. I have also realized that my biggest downfall is the urge to glance at the timer. If you take your eyes off the center of the screen just for a moment, you usually lose. But I am compelled to check the timer. It is so annoying, but maybe that is the real game here, one of willpower!

And a week later I sat down and nailed Hexagoner difficulty. I hadn’t made but a 45- second record and then, bam, I passed the 60-second mark. You really have to get in the zone to succeed at Super Hexagon. That said, upon progressing to the Hexagonest difficulty, my face turned pale and energy drained from my hands. It’s so fast! I have gone about 25 seconds, but I fear that’s about all I can handle. Of course, this is what I originally said about Hexagon and then Hexagoner, but seriously this time. This mess is hard.

I see from Steam achievement stats that Hexagonest is where most people call it quits. Right now, 34.8% of Super Hexagon players beat Hexagon, 17.8% beat Hexagoner, and only 6.7% beat Hexagonest. The telling part is that then 6.5% beat Hyper Hexagon, 5.7% beat Hyper Hexagoner, and a mere 3.2% beat Hyper Hexagonest. So in general, if people persevered through Hexagonest, they went ahead and beat a Hyper stage or two.

This game is crazy. You just keep a little triangle from falling into a hexagon (or square or another shape sometimes) in the center of the screen. The rest of the level basically collapses in on itself and you avoid all the lines that are falling toward the center. Geez, how do you even describe this? It is fast, the visuals pulse with the music, and it is hard as hell. I've managed to get 46 seconds into Hexagon difficulty. If I beat that difficulty, I'll be happy. I understand that the lines fall in patterns and that doing well in the game is a matter of learning such patterns, recognizing them at a split second's notice, and moving accordingly. But I stick with my first sentence. More than fun, interesting, or whatever, the game is crazy, insane, a speed freak.
