    jp's Dynasty Warriors Next (VITA)

    [December 8, 2015 06:26:36 PM]
Having (semi) recently played a Dynasty Warriors game on the PS3 and not being terribly impressed (and mostly confused) I was interested in having another go with a different title.

I played two "campaigns" (not sure how many there are in total) and another kind of "campaign" whose name I don't recall but was sort of like a multiplayer game with an AI rather than a story-based campaign.

I'm still not impressed, though that's not really the important thing. I'm definitely less confused though - this version does a better job with some "tutorial" text and basic intro stuff that helped me start to understand what's going on during a game.

Curiously, as far as I can tell, this is really the same game - but on the Vita. Same as in, the story seems the same. The characters are the same. The gameplay seems the same. I guess I could check to see if this is a port or not (I just checked, I don't think it is). So, it's Romance of the Three Kingdoms - which was good for me because I'm now vaguely familiar with it.

Now that I think about it, the core gameplay is the same (lots of button mashing, to be honest), but they added some quicktime events which I thought were fun (tap on the screen to dodge missiles, or tap enemies that jump and move the Vita around to see them all) and there's a duel system that I didn't understand (even though I was able to eventually win all the duels I played, go figure).

There is an apparent HUGE depth of things to do, collect, participate in and so on - but they all felt a bit overwhelming for someone who isn't a fan of the series. The mode I'm most curious about is an pseudo-online mode where if you're friends are also playing the game they can have an effect on your game (without it being a multiplayer experience). I have no real way of finding out how this works (or not), but it did seem like an interesting experiment.
