    jp's Resistance: Burning Skies (VITA)

    [December 29, 2015 10:26:52 AM]
I had forgotten how much fun this series was. Mostly because of the different weapons that have fun little uses.

Now that I think about it, it's been a while since I've played a resistance game, maybe the last was on the PSP? Anyways, the timeline has moved on a bit since the last one with this game taking place during the 50s in the US (rather than Europe). You play a fireman guy who initially deals with the invasion and then goes after his wife and family. Curiously, you're followed along for most of the game (led, actually), by Ellie Martinez who is a member of a resistance group that has been preparing for the invasion for a while. It's cool to see a woman (and possibly hispanic) in the lead role and I was dreading the moment when she would become the protagonists romantic interest. She never does! (though the wife still dies - that's when I thought it would happen, but it never does).

The game makes use of the touch screen A LOT for alternate firing modes for most of the weapons as well as a reloading for a couple. It mostly works though there were a few weapons I never really used all that much. My thought is that a lot of if has to do with holding the vita awkwardness - maybe my hands/fingers just aren't that flexible to handle all the finger motions I should be making? Maybe it's because I often play the Vita laying down and that makes it harder? (and my wrists more tired)

Overall it was an interesting experience, enjoyable and not too hard (or too long). But.... some of the moving around (especially panning to fire) felt really slow - annoyingly so in some occasions when I'd die while turning to face an attacker. I did get better as I played through, so there was some skill and adaptation required (coming off Destiny especially - which is pretty fast). Mostly I learned to use cover more often, strategically switch weapons (and their upgrades) around, and have more patience in combat.

Short, fun, and not too hard. Neat weapons, slower action.
