    Breanna's Here They Lie (PS4)

    [January 18, 2018 07:10:39 PM]
I have now completed "Here They Lie" and I am sad to say that I am very disappointed. The game offers only questions with no answers. Who are the people in the animal masks? Who are the creatures with animal heads? Who is the man that you cannot look at? Who is Dana? Who is Buddy? What is going on!? I really don't have much more to say about this game. All my speculation and excitement for the ending proved to be completely wasted energy as there will be no answers for me.

Continuing from where I left off last play session... I started in the city right where there are all the burned bodies. For one, I'm not entirely sure why there are burned bodies here. My initial thought was of the city Pompeii. The people of Pompeii believed that they had committed a great sin, if I remember correctly... Perhaps the burned bodies were once people that had also committed a great sin?

Next, you have to sneak around the city, avoiding the weird animal/humanoid creatures. Gameplay wise, this was the worst part of the game so far. Avoiding the creatures made the game way less suspenseful and made it more of a waiting game. One thing I did find interesting is that the creatures have headlights for eyes... Instead of "deer in the headlights" it's "deer with the headlights". Continuing with the idea of sinners, I wonder if the purpose of those creatures is to search for sinners? There are 2 manga by Yoshiki Tonogai, "Judge" and "Doubt", that both have characters that act as judges/jury of the "guilty" and the characters in both manga have animal heads locked over their faces. Just a thought...

Eventually you fall into the "depths" and are chased by one of the creatures... until suddenly... the creature chasing you seems to almost be your friend? I think if you stop long enough it will try and hurt you, but as long as you keep moving, it doesn't really seem to pursue too hard. While wandering in the sewers the creature ends up leading you to a room with a bunch of humans with animal heads.

Here there is a Bioshock Infinite moment in that you are given a weapon and you have to click on one of the characters... Personally, I felt very attached to the creature that I was walking around with and I was very upset that the other creature was beating him up and hurting him. What I wanted to do was knock out the rude one but what the game ended up doing was killing him! I can't express how frustrated I was that I didn't get a choice in harming vs killing. The game gave me freedom of choice and expression and then took it away at THE vital point.

Once you leave the room you re-enter the city to find a bunch of people with animal heads running around and doing super crazy things. It's like "The Purge" 24/7. There is a couple that you can interact with at one point and they prompt you to pick up a brick and drop it onto someones head. (Assuming this kills the victim) Murder seems to be a rite of passage to continue through the game.

The point I ended this play session is when you go into a room with weird cultist people that tie you down for a creature to come feed on you. You then leave your body and go up fly up into a club type place. I'm not 100% sure where this game is leading and I feel like I am missing the main message... I'm hoping my completion of the game will give me some further insight for my final entry!

To preface my game logs for "Here They Lie", I own a PSVR unit so I will be switching between PSVR and normal PS4 depending on my stress level! Today, I started the game in PSVR but quickly became so stressed and scared that I had to switch to “2D mode”. I made it as far as talking to Dana (woman in the yellow dress, I assume) and then walking onto the train. I couldn’t even turn my head because I was so terrified that there would be something there! When I finally got the headset off and set aside, I was able to hesitantly continue. The entire environment is completely abandoned. It seems to be a shell of what it once was. Everything is washed out and grey or dark and dreary. The music is either entirely absent or very quiet and eery. It perfectly reflects the environment and helps create a very creepy atmosphere and a sense of suspense.

I’m really not too far in the game since I am trying to pace myself, but here are some of my initial thoughts and questions beyond what I wrote above:

When I looked at myself in the mirror in the bathroom and when I look down at my hands while walking, I can’t help but notice that my skin has a sickly, grey pallor. Almost like I’m already dead… Maybe a hint as to what the game is actually about?

The layout of the environment is very confusing. For example, why am I walking in a train station and then suddenly you open a door and walk down a hall to a kitchen in what seems to be a home? I’m not sure if it is supposed to be implying that I am in a city and randomly wandering into memories or something else entirely. I’m hoping that this will be explained in more detail later.

The weird notes throughout the game seem to be referencing either death in general or specifically brutal murder. And I’m a little confused by the locations of the notes. Am I supposed to be wandering around and looking for clues or am I supposed to be running away from something? Either way, I’m curious what the notes are trying to reference and where the story is headed.

My last random thought is that maybe the yellow that is everywhere in the game is possibly referencing the book/game “I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream”… But that’s a long shot and I’m not 100% convinced of the reference yet.

    Looking forward to playing more!
