jp's Real Time Conflict: Shogun Empires (DS)

    [October 3, 2020 05:37:10 PM]
Oh man. I spent some more time playing this and it really is a disaster in terms of its controls and AI.

I decided to give a shot to one of the real-time battles - I mostly hung back and tried to be defensive. The AI enemies went all over the place. THen I lost a bunch of troops who stood around getting hit without advancing on the enemy that was attacking them. In the end, I won because I had one archer left (I guess I took out enemies who, in turn, just sat there and died?) who took out an enemy that got stuck behind a tree.

So, that wasn't interesting at all.

But then, there are some mini-games. There's a ship-to-ship battle where you have ballista that you have to aim against archers on the opposite ship. The tracking and aiming is terrible - and I lost a battle simply because I couldn't get any ballista to turn enough to hit an archer on the edge of the screen.

There's a castle siege mini-game that's similar - you only have two ballista this time! But, the same idea - just move them around to try to hit the enemy archers (before they kill your siege weapon).

There's also a chase the escaping boss on a horse while firing arrows. You fire the arrows, but the target stays the same. You can also move left/right to avoid arrows fired at you. However, I was never able to see the arrows being shot at me - so I don't know how I would dodge/avoid those.

Sigh.I think I'm done with this game.

Booted this up yesterday and it seems like combination strategy and real-time strategy. No base-building or anything like that, just selecting troops and sending them into battle. That being said, there is an upgrade system so you can make your troops stronger, faster and "healthier".

I was expecting a campaign style game with missions and what not - so far it seems like it's just a turn-based game where you're trying to take over an entire map. You can play the real-time battles (I tried one and lost terribly) or go with a simulated outcome...I lose a lot of those. Losing a battle is really bad because you lose an "army". You don't start with that many armies and if you run out of armies, you lose the game.

So, I lost my first game in less than 20 minutes. I was quite surprised, to be honest.

I guess the way to go is to control the real-time battles directly if things look close? I'll have to play a bit more to see, but I'm not terribly excited at this point to be honest.
