jp's Advance Wars 2:Black Hole Rising (GBA)

    [February 17, 2004 11:34:38 AM]
Well, I've decided to move on to another game. If I only had AW2 I would definitely keep on playing, this game has sooooo much to do it is just incredible. However, I have a backlog of christmas presents that are waiting to be tried out, so I've decided to shelve this. I'm a little sad about it (to an extent) since it's definitely been a blast.

Yay! I finished the campaign. My overall rating was "A". I'm not too pleased with that but I can't complain since I "bombed" a couple of levels and only got "B" ratings. (I mostly got "S"). All in all this is still a great game. I wish I could go back and replay specific missions or look at how I did in certain scenarios. Unfortunately it seems that I have to do the whole thing again...oh well. As far as the final mission goes, it REALLY made a difference whether or not you picked the right COs. I played with Grit/Max/Eagle and Grit was awesome, while Max got trampled. Eagle held his own and pulled through more to the end. The first time I tried the map I chose Colin/Andy/Eagle. Colin sucked and Andy got destroyed.

Over the next few days I plan on playing around in the war room and try out some of the maps there (as well as the other COs).

It's time for the final battle! Yay! I've started the "final" (I'm sure there is at least one more...) battle against Sturm. It seems to be ok except that I've made a few daft mistakes (whoops, forgot about the laser turret!). I also resent the fact that you have to pick COs before seeing the actual map... I would have chosen differently (I went with Olaf, Andy and whats-his-face-with-the-planes). Grit was an obvious choice for this one but I guess I'll try to see how it goes anyways.

I think I'm pretty close to finishing the game. I've only got the final battle of the Green Earth campaign and from there I think I'll have to play a final-final battle. If I'm really that close to the end I have to say that it has felt really short. It hasn't been, but it has felt like it. I guess that this is in part due to how absorbing this game can be. I know I've still got plenty left to play out though since I've only tried a few maps in the Warroom and I've got a boatload of new COs to test.

I've decided to take a little break and try out some of the War room maps. (as in, not those that are part of the campaign). I still like the idea that you can buy new maps with points earned and all of that and I'm even gladder to say that some of the maps are REALLY hard. Wow. There's one where you start out in a little valley surrounded by two enemies (in concentric circles). Phew! I haven't been able to beat it yet, but is certainly is an important challenge!

Advance Wars 2 (and 1...) has something really nice. After each level you are awarded a "ranking" which is based on how fast you finished the level, how much damage you took, and how much damage you caused. Having a ranking per se isn't all that clever. What makes Advance Wars different from, say, Warcraft, is that whenever I finish a level I really feel that the ranking expresses how well I played. I can usually tell when I'm going to get an S rank, and it feels good. Whenever I don't, I can also usually tell. The whole ranking just allows me to be more self-critical of how I played the game, what mistakes I made and where they cost me. Talk about self-reflection!

I just finished up the Yellow Comet campaign by mistake. You see, I cleared a level where I opened up a secret level. I wanted to play it straight away so I picked the next level rather quickly and only paid attention to the fact that it ha a star. The star meant it was the final level and not the secret one. So, having finished that level I'm not playing the Green Moon campaign. Doh!

I've finished the Orange Star campaign and started on the Yellow Comet. It is still amazing to me how great this game is. I think that the missions are somewhat harder than the last one, which is nice. Sometimes it makes it seem really impossible, but the truth is that you have to take a lot of care to study the map straight away. If you don't you might quickly realize you've screwed up somewhere and won't win the map. Cool.

I really enjoyed Advance Wars. There was just so much to do (in terms of maps) and so much to try out, and it felt so well balanced that it was a total blast. Thus far, Advance Wars 2 is more of the goodness that I had in AW. If this where a PC game I would have called it an expansion pack, but oh well.
