    neoyaku2's P.N. 03 (GC)

    [May 27, 2007 02:25:29 AM]
I beat this game some time ago.. and I don't know where the entry is.. but.. yea, I beat this in mid March.. and I liked it for the most part..

I definitely got my $5.00's worth. It was challenging, I liked most of the music, the gameplay was simple but had an "I need to master this" element to it.

Price I would have paid at most for it.. $15.00.

Good, Decent Game. A sequel would do more good than harm.

Well, I have had ample time with this game(since my last post), haven't beat it yet though, and I am truly enjoying it.

Its fast, reflex-based gameplay is exciting, and challenging-- comparable to games like Contra, Metal Slug, etc. I like the fact that, most of the time, if you get hit or mess up it is purely your fault, and not something inherently flawed within the game. There are times, however, where the camera may be the cause of death, but that doesn't happen often. The enemies tend to spawn and locate themselves somewhere in front of you, so any camera adjustments aren't often necessary.

I am currently on mission 10 and encountered a difficulty spike-- from Tolerable to Extremely Difficult. Most of the bosses up to this point, except for the final boss on level 9, were pushovers and didn't require much thought. I haven't gotten to level 10's boss, but from what I encountered on level 9, I can only assume that this next boss will be insane....but now that I think about it..

I'm noticing that the difficulty is rooted in the inability to destroy enemies fast enough. I think this may be the result of my not buying the correct upgraded power suit, (there are about 8 different ones so far). The bosses and enemies this far into the game take MUCH less damage than near the beginning, so my power suit from that I used for stages 1-8 doesn't seem to be adequate for these last few stages.

I guess it could be argued that this is, by nature, a typical difficulty increase, but I can't help but think that it all boils down to-- "At this point in the game you are supposed to have [THIS] Particular Power Suit". I am hoping that this is not the case. And while you CAN still BEAT the game with the old power suit, I am sure that had I correctly saved my points and bought a particular suit by this point in the game, I would be having a much easier time( and may have found the game too easy(!)).

So I will see how it goes, I am currently backtracking and playing the "Trial Missions" so that I can get enough points to buy this "better" power suit.. When that happen, I'll make my final judgement.

BUT SO FAR-- P.N.03 has been a game right up my alley: A Tied and True New School Shooter.

Well, I played some more of P.N.03 and I do have to say that, it is getting better and better.

I really do NOT see why soo many people hated this game. I think that because it is 3-D and it looks like an Adventure title, many people hold the game to this standard. In all fairness, It fails miserably in the Adventure category, but excels in the Shooter category. Placing minor camera issues aside, I found this to be a highly enjoyable, highly skillful, and highly challenging shooter game... or SHMUP (shoot 'em up). I happen to enjoy the music, the atmoshpere, and the style of the game.. and for $5.00, I am more than happy with this purchase.

Old school shooter fans, should try this game, and see what how this is a rather new take on the shooting genre-- almost in the way that Silent Bomber(PSX) did (Though it can be argued whether or not it was a "shooter" game, it had the feel of a shooter game).

***OOPS, I made a mistake in the listing. THIS GAME IS FOR GAMECUBE, not PS2.***

Well, I finally found this game for a really nice price at GameStop on Sunday-- Five dollars. I had to pick it up. I had been interested in the game since it was announced--about 2 years or more ago. From the screenshots, it looked like some really cool-futuristic/music based shooter-action game, which is just the type of game that I like. (AND it's from Capcom, my favorite videogame company.) SO, I had very "modest" expectations, to say the least.

I was finally able to play P.N.03 on Monday, and have played it maybe three times since. The first time I turned it on, it was everything I expected. You hit start, there is a short cutscene, you start a mission, there's some briefing on the mission, and BOOM, you're in the game-- No long-winded conversations.

The more I played the game, the more I began to see that it was structured around this notion of short-ness. Each level is broken into a set number of rooms, and you are evaluated based on your performance in each room... Beat a room, get a grade, beat another room, get another grade... and so on. After playing for about 15 mins, I began to realize that there's something very simple about P.N.03, and I can't quite put it into words yet, I haven't gotten far enough, but this is what I have concluded so far...

P.N.03 is all about shooting and dodging, simply put. You shoot to hit, you dodge to NOT get hit. You cannot shoot and move at the same time, so, you have to learn the patterns of the enemies to find openings. The controls, however, suggest something more contrived--- You press A-to shoot, B-to jump, R-to dodge right, L-to dodge Left, Y-to duck, Z-to make 90 degree or 180 degree turns. The analog stick controls the movement of the character in a typical sense, and the C-stick allows limited camera control. There are combinations of buttons as well, such as Y-to duck and then R-to dodge to the right-- creating the ducking dodge... (L-can be used to roll the opposite direction.)

I plan to play the game some more in about two weeks, when I have more time...
